Hello,

I'm not a relative but I'm researching the families that owned a particular property in Germantown, Philadelphia. I have found the the Unruh family owned this tract of land in the 1850's 60's and I'd like to speak to someone familiar with this family.

I was curious if they had any ties to the underground railroad.

Thank you for your replies!
Hello,

I am researching the Unruh family who lived off Mt. Pleasant ave in Germantown PA. I noted on the 1860 US Census that John and Elizabeth Unruh had a ED MILLER listed (age 16)as working there.

Does anyone know if they owned slaves? I'm guessing that this Ed stokes may have been a slave with some research I'm doing on the property. Can anyone offer me some clues??

She was the daughter of John Unruh and Elizabeth Unknown born 26 Feb 1790 and baptized 29 Jul 1792 at St Michaels Lutheran Church in Germantown, Phila, PA. She and Samuel were married in March 1809 at First Reformed Church in Phila. I have a pdf copy of that marriage entry if you are interested. The last I found them on census records was 1840 in Washington, Wayne Co, IN under the name Samuel Freighthorn, IF that is them.

I've had that for a very long time, before I started carefully documenting where information came from.

I strongly suspect, though cannot prove it, that John's wife, Catharina's mother, was Elizabeth Fisher.

I descend through Catharina's brother, Joseph, that went back to Germantown and married his 2nd cousin.

Brenda
bantal@tampabay.rr.com

I have John born 13 Mar 1795 to John Unruh and Elizabeth Unknown. John (b 1795) married Naomi. I don't know if all or only some of his children are Naomi's as I have not located a marriage for them.

John died in Mar 1860. His Berrien Co, MI administration lists his heirs as:
John Unruh Jr of Berrien Co, IN - administrator
Hannah Benson of LaPorte Co, IN
William Unruh of Porter Co, IN
Joseph Unruh of Porter Co, IN
Daniel Unruh of Galien, MI
Mary Ann Kurtz of Dayton, OH
Sarah Ann Alden (formerly Baldwin) of California
Harriet [cannot make out surname]
children of Ellen Andrews (deceased) of LaPorte Co, IN

John Unruh Jr (the above administrator) was born about 1816 and he is the one I have married to Hannah Soper and Hester Swank.
Great suggestion, Jack. Also if you are in the vicinity of Goessel you are only a few miles from the Mennonite Library and Archives at Bethel College in North Newton, KS. They have hundreds of church records and family histories as well as shiplists etc. And they are across the street from the Kaufman Museum which houses many more items of interest and is worth the visit if you have Mennonite ancestry.

http://www.bethelks.edu/services/mla/
Immigration: According to the, Migration From Russian Empire, Vol 2, Oct 1882 - Apr 1886, Johann Bargen and his family went from Bremen and Southampton to New York arriving 19 Sep 1885. Marie is listed as the wife, with Suzanna, 11; Johann, 10; Marie, 3; Elizabeth, 1; and Abraham, infant. The first clue was that their children, Susanna and John D., immigrated in 1885, according to the 1910 census. It would seem that Aganetha Weibe was the mother of Susanna and Johann and that Marie was the mother of Marie, Elizabeth, Abraham, and David.Immigration Source: Migration From the Russian Empire, Vol 2, page 385.
I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Lavern and Pearl Unruh – children of Noah and Emma”, which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in about 1900, Michigan City (LaPorte Co.) IN, and Laverne looks to be about 8 and Pearl about 6.

I found these children in the 1900 census for Michigan City (LaPorte Co.) IN, with parents William N. (likely for Noah) (age 40), his wife Emma (43). LaVerne, son, born Sep 1879, age 21, and Pearl A., born May 1883, age 17.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Laverne or Pearl Unruh.

If this is the Tobias that I believe it to be, he was my great-grandfather. It is hard to tell from the information that you have included here, however, my Tobias B. Unruh immigrated to Kansas in 1893. My Grandfather, Peter, was born 1894. He was a cousin to Tobias A. (the minister that you mentioned who was on the original committee) I know this is an old posting, but if you are still interested, I would be glad to send you what I know.
