Randy,

Hi! My name is Tami Hankins and Carl Stanley Unsbee was my gr-grandfather.(step) I think. I have been corresponding with tavia and Marilyn trying to figure out for sure. If you could help in this matter it would be great. My great grandmother's name was Sarah Elizabeth Henderson Hankins Unsbee. She married Carl S. Unsbee born August 5th 1889. If any of this jives with your Carl Unsbee could you let me know? You can e-mail me at ess@rconnect.com.
Yes--Marilyn is wonderful. Let me see what I can dig up and put together for you. I'll e-mail it to the address you gave me in your last message. Don't despair if it takes a little while. I have just gone back to school and I have all that "school stuff" to do in addition to the regular family stuff.

I'll get back with you ASAP. Take care and keep digging for family info. It always seems to surface in places where you least expect it.

Tavia

I love it when this happens! Your Charles Unsbee is definitely my Charles Unsbee (my great-great grandfather). He was from Sangamon County, Ill. I still live in the area and his grave is very near my home in a country cemetery. I know that he re-married after my great-great grandother died; was you grandma Unsbee's name Helen by any chance? I seem to recall that name and maybe Osburn as her family name. does any of this ring a bell? I think she may be buried with him if I remember correctly.

If you want more family info I'll be happy to share what I know about the Unsbees. They have been in this country since before 1776 but I'm still working on their origins before that. I think they were probably from the north of England.

He thinks they were married in decatur, ill or sangamon co. ill not really sure. Thanks for your time!

I was at that reunion! My father is Richard Unsbee. Your dad and my grandfather (Paul)are cousins. I think your parents are delightful! I always look forward to seeing them at the reunion. It would be wonderful if you and your family could come some time.

I have been working on the family tree for a couple of years. I have us traced back to the 1850s here in Sangamon County, but have so far not had any luck connecting us to the Unglesbys out in Maryland and Ohio (there are tons of them there). I call people in those areas when I go there for my job, but so far no one has kept very good records on the family. I have copies of documents from the late 1700s from a William Unglesby who petitioned for a military pension from the U.S. government for work he did as a military artificer in pre-revolutionary Indian skirmishes in the Ohio territory. I do not know what relation he is to us but I firmly believe that he is related since the name is so unusual. I will keep trying, though. My hope is to get info together and get copies to all our family members eventually. Unglesby appears in the Domesday Book (the first census in Great Britain - dated around 1067) as a place name. I can't seem to find anything further on that.

Anyway, we are a colorful family if the Unsbees I know are any indicator! Brilliant, you know, and quite wonderful (and I say that without any prejudice of course!)

Let's keep in touch and I'll let you know if I find out anything else. In the meantime, consider coming to the reunion!

Hi cousin!

Lewis Unsbee is my father and still lives in La Grange, Il. with my mother, Marjorie Burt Unsbee. My brother, John, just moved from La Grange to Las Vegas. Lewis' father was Carl Unsbee and I guess his father was Charles.

I remember years ago trying to find Charles' name at the Illinois memorial at Vicksburg where he fought with the 3rd Illinois Cavalry but to no avail. Later, we found he was listed not under Unsbee but Hilman.

From what little checking I've done online it looks like Charles Unsbee was married twice:
To Catharine Agnes Lake on 9/10/1868 and after she died to Delora Helen Osborn on 12/6/1871. I'm assuming I'm decended from the second marriage, as I don't believe there were children from the first.

I guess my parents went to a reunion several years back and had a great time and were able to pick up more family info. At some point I'd like to gather it all together for my kids.

I moved from Illinois to Colorado in 1979, then to San Jose, Calif. in 1988 and then to Gresham, Or (outside Portland) in 1991 where we are today.

Hello Randy! We are cousins then because I believe that he was my great-great-grandfather as well. Hillman was his stepfather's name. Poffenberger was his mother's maiden name. I found her grave a few years back near Rochester, Illinois. Are you in Illinois? Are you related to Louis Unsbee?

My great grandfather was Charles Unsbee, previously Charles Hilman, who I think is also an unglesby/unklesby. He may be the one who changed the name to Unsbee after the Civil War. (He had enlisted under Unsbee in the Ill. Cavalry)
