My mother's maiden name was Unzueta, her father Angel and herself also were from Durango mexico, she was an only child, but it would be nice to get any info on my Grandfather if anyone knows.

My Father was Alfonso Unzueta born in Catalina in 1927 or 1928 Marilyn I think we are first cousins. if you are my Uncle Gus's Daughter then we are. My uncle was a my faviote uncle on my Dads side. Retired Navy.You have a older brother Richard I beleive. Your Mother Eva I think that was her name died when I was pretty young but I remember Her. Our Grand Parents on were zazueta's. I remember my Dad telling us kids that.

My great grandparents are from Los Herreras, Durango, Mexico. Their names are Monico and Matilda. My grandfathers name is Cesario and was born in Santa Barbara in the 1920's but moved back to Los Herreras as a child.

I have a tio Miguel Unzueta. His brother is Cesario Unzueta and their parents names were Matilda and Monico Unzueta. My great grandfather was shot. My grandfather Cesario was born in Santa Barbara, but has roots to Los Herreras, Durango Mexico. Sound familar?

My name is Natalie Unzueta. I live in Las Vegas. My father was Jose Unzueta born in 1955-2005. I know my grandfather's name was Jose Unzueta too and I believe he was from Durango. My grandmother was Amalia Unzueta. They had 4 children together before she passed away at a very young age. I was just curious to see other Unzueta's out there. I am getting married soon and changing my last name so I was doing research. I am getting Unzueta tatooded somewhere on my body in order to honor my last name. It is a rare last name and I am sad that I am changing it but it will always be with me.

Greetings to all!
I'm trying to collect as much informaton as possible on the Unzueta family line. My grandmother, Basilia Unzueta, was born in Santa Barbara in the 1930's, but was raised in Pasquales, Durango. She has since passed away. Her father's name was Vibiano Unzueta. That's where I hit a brick wall.

Hi,my family(Unzueta) comes from Durango, Mexico and I know that so are in Juarez. My grandfather's name Simon Unzueta lived in Santa Barbara he dead long ago. Most of my close family lives in Santa Barbara. I have been trying to research our family also, what I found so far is that the surname Unzueta is Basque.

My name is Julian Santos Unzueta from Santa Barbara (30 yrs). My dad is Gilbert Marcus Unzueta of S.B., his father was Julian Unzueta born in Durango. It sounds to me that Durango is where its at.

Dear Marilyn - and anybody else there,

Please, I just want you to know that I am born and bred there, near Bilbao, in the Basque country so there are certain things I know for a fact. There was some resistance to Catholicism maybe in the early Middle Ages, that is for sure (and not everybody in the country is nowadays too bothered religion nowadays either) BUT is was nothing to do with Franco. I may add here that Franco was a catholic, BUT not the whole of the Church was with him (it may help to think of Pinochet in Chile,El Salvador, Argentina, Brazil...) and for example many Basque priests suffered (lots of people certainly feared for their lives and there was exile for some too) as a consequence of his policies and not because were pagans!!

I was born in 1963 so I lived through some of Franco´s dictatorship, the transition, the political changes in the Basque country and Spain etc, etc.

And I do have an open mind, believe me, which does not mean I am going to believe everything I read on the internet.

I did not mean to hit a nerve, but I will send you a web site to check out. There is more than one side to every story, and more than one can be right. When the Priest were sent from Spain up to the Pyrenees to try and convert the Basque to catholicism many refused and feared for their lives. I hope people do read and research this. We should always keep an open mind when reading what people post. I am not saying that you are wrong, but just a little one sided about this. Basques have been Catholic since the 8th century at least! Franco died in 1975. We were "pagan worshippers" once upon a time obviously like most people on the planet but...
However, some Basques did leave their country because of Franco's dictatorship - during the civil war he started with a coup and which started a 40 year long period of fascist authoritarian rule and cancellation of the rights of the Basques to use their own language, autonomy, etc. But this is another story. I hope that whoever reads the previous message reads this one too!!!

I am so happy to read that another Unzueta realizes what our heritage is. I found out about our basque culture by accident from a retired professor. He approached me and asked me if I was Basque, I thought he was calling me a fish. I looked up the last name's of my grandparents, Unzueta and Zazueta and found out that they are very old Basque name. Most Basque fled when Franco was in rule, because he wanted them to convert to Catholicism and they were Pagan worshippers. I hope more of my family looks into the history of our name.

Durango is also the name of a town in The Basque Country - northern Spain. The surname originates in the Durango area and there are branches of the Unzueta family living there. It is a Basque name and cannot come from anywhere else in Spain. I am Unzueta too, way back we are all related ans the Basque country is small by any standards and the population has grown a lot sine the emigration days.

I was married to MIguel Angel Hererra-Unzueta in !971 in LOs Angeles, Calf. I have a son name, Erick Angel Unzueta born 8/27/71. Miguel's family is from Durango,Mexico. He has a brother 4 sisters. Manual, Lupe, Carmen, and twins can not rember their names. His father was shot in Mexico. I am doing this for my son. It was a shock to find Unzueta on line. Hi everyone.

My Grandfather, Cesario Unzueta, is from Durango and currently resides in California (raised in Santa Barbara). I've always been curious about the surname and family ties in Durango. It sounds like the ‘Unzueta’ surname is popular in Durango. How do you go about tracing its roots? Have any of you attempted to visit Durango to do some research? That's my ultimate goal, but I need to do some more digging with my grandparents/relatives before taking a trip.

Spain is a big country! You should be looking in the Basque Country in Northern Spain - that is where we are from; as you probably know, we have got our own language unrelated to Spanish. Our surname means "a place where the ivy grows". My family comes from the border areas between the Basque provinces of Vizcaya, Guipuzcoa and Alava. A Basque name can only originate in the Basque country, even if your family moved to America 500 years ago! The area is pretty small and is it not so difficult to trace your origins. Very likely that all the Unzuetas in the world are related after all!

I remember your sister Christina and your brother Robert Jr. My Dad would take me to your parents house when I was about seven or eight. I had so much fun with them. And your mom was such a nice lady, my Aunt Flo! she always treated me very good.

Anyway, please e-mail me so we can catch up on things. I have been trying to do a family tree and looking for info. on my grandma's side. She passed away before I was born and I was never around the Unzueta family much or my Dad, so I'm in the dark about many things.

Hi, I am the daughter of an Unzueta. Do you have a family member that had the last name Zazueta. My grandmother was a Zazueta, married an Unzueta. They lived on Avalon (Catalina Island). My father was born their in 1924 and came from a big fam. From what I understand this is a Basque name from the Pyrenees (between France and Spain) they settled in Mexico and moved to calif. in the late 1800. Hi, my grandfather new Zeferina Unzueta Fragoso.They lived in El 10 de Abril.What I know about her is that she was a nice lady. I never met her but my mother was a young girl and thats wath she said. My aunt new her much better.Ask any older person in El 10 and they will tell you much more.If you want me to help u find more information just reply. Or hopefuly you already know lots about her.

I am the wife of an Unzueta from Juarez, Mexico. His father is Martin Unzueta Castillo. (where Castillo is his mother's madien name). I am researching our family tree and am looking for anyone who may have information on where to locate records from Mexico and Spain.
