Hello, Cousin!
'Ruliford' was my grandmother's brother, and both were children of Charles Wesley Upchurch and Julina Perrine.

Several years ago I met one of Geneva's children, Donna. Also communicated with her sister, Terri but never met her. I lost track of both sisters when they changed e-mail addresses. I'm assuming you are one of their children and would love to visit with you.

I have lots of information about all our line and for a started you can go to my Web site (www.coxok.com) and there are pictures of our Upchurches there including Ruliford and Eller.... You may also contact me offline at mazie@coxok.com.

Mae Cox in Oklahoma
Hello, I am a descendant of these two. My maternal grandmother (Geneva Upchurch Sinks) was the daughter of Glen Wesley Upchurch, who was the son of Thomas Rutherford Upchurch and his wife Eller. I don't know very much about any Upchurches past my grandma, but I am interested in learning more.

In the 1880 census Sarah Upchurch was listed as a widow and her mother -in-law was Elizabeth Upchurch and living in the household.
Maybe your Julia Upchurch was my gg-aunt.

Re: looking for upchurchs from kansas that are related to Gene Upchurch

In looking through my records I found a Gene Upchurch who was the son of Abner Upchurch b. 1899 I.T. (Indian Territory). Unfortunately I have absolutely nothing else on this Gene U.-- just his name.

I do have that Abner U. was the son of Henry N. Upchurch (b. abt 1853 NC, d. 1904 I.T.) and Elizabeth Lofland/Laughlin (b. May 1862). They married October 30, 1879 in Arkansas.

Since Henry U. died in I.T., and since half his children were born in Arkansas, I'm wondering if perhaps his parents and grandparents didn't live somewhere around where my Upchurches lived in Conway County Arkansas. Where this Henry Upchurch joins my clan is through Allen Upchurch. Henry's father Benjamin Upchurch was s/o Allen U. Another of Allen's sons, Patrick Bogan Upchurch, was my GGGF.

I do have a lot more info on this line and if it matches up with your line, I'll be happy to share what I have.

Mae Cox in Oklahoma

I have the Upchurch book, by Belle Lewter West. It has no mention of Samuel. However, in the first chapter there is a lot of discussion of several Upchurch's in Brunswick Co. during that time frame. From the information, it is possible to surmise that he was of one of those families. Contact me direct at s_rone@msn.com and I will share with you what info I have.

Wow, I just read your post on the Upchurches and was amazed at the information you have compiled. I dabbled in the Upchurch line breifly and was always curious as to what happened to that part of my family. My Upchurches (Ruthefus/Rutherford Upchurch) came from Virginia married a Dabbs woman (cant remember her maiden name, she was married before) they ended up in Texas and are listed on the 1960 census for Bowie County, Texas. I wonder if you have any information on this family? Thanks

Was about to end my subscription to Ancestry when I found these posts. My paternal grandmother was Kathryn Upchurch who gave birth to an illegitimate baby boy, Donald Wayne, on March 7, 1935 in Asheboro, Buncombe County, NC. I was overwhelmed by the number of Upchurch's I have found so started to hone in on the name Wayne. I may be on to something....

The resources listed in theses posts are great and I know I will find a trail soon.

If you or anyone who has posted has any information to share on a Donald Wayne Upchurch that would be helpful. There may be a lead? As an aside, my father ended up in Piscataway, NJ by 1936. On Easter Sunday, 1936 he was 'dedicated' at the Salvation Army (who is no help) with the name Leslie Stites listed as his father (which Mr. Stites claimed to be untrue, so I'm also a bit at a loss for who his birth father was.)

i've been searching for my father's birth mother. i've learned her name was kathryn upchurch. she gave birth to him via a Salvation Army unwed mother's home in Asheville -Buncombe County - NC in March 1935. his birth record indicates he was given the name Donald Wayne, no surname, no father listed.

i've been searching for a connection to the name 'wayne' hoping it may have been a family name.

any info you might have on a kathryn upchurch who would have likely been an older teen/very young woman in 1935 would be appreciated.

I'm tickled to find another cousin! I've been trying to locate others in the Charles Wesley Upchurch (1864-1915) line and am delighted to discover someone from the Nancy and Hill branch.

Charles Wesley Upchurch and Julina Perrine were my great grandparents -- Their daughter, Mary May Upchurch, was my grandmother!

I live in the same county where these Upchurches resided and have researched them extensively... also the Millsaps. Would love to share family info with you about my grandmother and her children....

Mae Cox in Oklahoma

Joann,

I've looked at my files to see if your relative was amongst my North Carolina Upchurches, and didn't find the name. However, most of the ones I have aren't in the 1900s. Quite a few of these folks left NC and migrated to Arkansas about mid-1800.

If you can establish who your grandfather was and if he's one of the ones who came to Arkansas, I'll be happy to share my info with you. You can reach me offline at upchurch@coxok.com if you'd like.

Mae Cox in Oklahoma

There are numerous internet sites with Upchurch data on them that can be found using UPCHURCH as the search word. Since you didn’t give your lineage, it’s hard to know just which one would be just right for you.

One site that I know of, www.upchurchstory.com, is posted by R. Phillip Upchurch. There isn’t a whole lot of research data on the site such as names, dates, and information. The reason I mention it is because RPU is the author of the Upchurch Bulletins. These UBs are quarterly publications dating back to 1980 reporting the findings of various researchers of the Upchurch clan. I’m thinking you can still buy the back copies ... you’d need to contact him and his phone and address are listed on his site. These UBs have a whole lot of info on all the various Upchurches, and are where many of us found data to begin building our databases.

As for books, I know of three though I feel certain there are others. Two of these three books give quite a bit of info on the English ancestors and then bring them on to America with the first few generations discussed: “Upchurch Family of England, Virginia, and North Carolina” by Belle Lewter West, 1972; and Olive A. Morgan’s “The Upchurch Story.” Unfortunately, both books are out of print today though you can most likely find either or both of them through your library.

The third book is one I authored: “The Upchurches of Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Indian Territory: 1624-1925. Most of the Upchurches share the same ancestor – Michael Upchurch, the first Upchurch to arrive in America in 1638. Michael (1624-1681) is discussed in length along with several other ancestors. For more information on this, visit my web site at www.coxok.com

My lineage is Michael > Richard > John > James III > Harmon > Allen > Patrick Bogan > Charles Wesley > Mary May. If any of these are in your line, you may contact me and I’ll be happy to share info on any of them.

Good luck on your endeavors,
Mae Cox
The only Rutherford Upchurch I have in my files doesn't look to be the one for whom you search:

Thomas Rutherford Upchurch b. October 15, 1880 in Conway County, Arkansas, son of Charles Wesley Upchurch my GGF.

He was known as Uncle "Ruliford" and married M. Louella Stubblefield. They made their home in Cleveland County, Oklahoma.

I assumed you meant the 1860 census instead of the 1960 one and if so, then this fellow would definitely not be your line.

Do you by any chance know if they might have come through Arkansas? There is another line that came through Mississippi.... a lot of them ended up in Texas too.

Sorry I can be of more help but perhaps if you find more data on him, I might be able to attach his line at one of my ancestors. We all seem to go back to Michael Upchurch b. 1624. On him I have world's of data!

Take care...

Mae Cox in Oklahoma

Found info above on my GGMother's death certificate. I have located her in the census' AFTER her marriage to Edison Young (in 1905), but cannot find any info for her before that. She had children named Georgia, Gladys, Florence, Edwin and Della. Also a tendency to change her birth year each census. She somehow ended up in Rochester NY, where her first two children (twins) were born. They then went to New Jersey, Colorado and Washington, where she died in 1950. Anybody missing an Upchurch relative? Thanks for any assistance. Stacie

My Upchurch family came from Virginia to Wayne County Kentucky. My great great grandfather Shadrack Thomas Upchurch and his wife Louisa Jane Craig Upchurch migrated to Douglas County Missouri in the early 1870's. Their daughter Amanda married my great grandfather William Trail.
Their son Winfield Scott Hancock Trail married Malissa Hatfield. Scott and Malissa had 9 children my father Russell was the third child. He passed away in 2003. I have much information I will be glad to share.

e mail me at shiloeap@sbcglobal.net
