Does anyone have any information on how to get a copy of the Opdyke book. The only source I found is from the Higginson Book Company, and though they are very reasonable, there are no pictures in their version. I would really like to get a copy with the pictures. If anyone knows of a source, please let me know by responding to this post.

Thanks,

Russell Brunet

George W. Updike

George Washington Updike was my father, James Newell Updike's, grandfather. My father is a retired Methodist minister, the last of his generation of 6 children of James Garfield Updike and Grace Almina Randolph. (His siblings' names are Gerald, Ferris, Wayne, Frances, and Lois.) Gerald R. Updike (1906-1981) had no children. Ferris E. Updike (1908-1997) had no children. Wayne M. Updike (1910-1991) had two children: Larry E. and Geraldine. Frances L. Updike Jones (1915-1996) had two boys (Dennis and Daryl? who both died as children of muscular dystrophy) and a daughter, Sharon. Lois B. Updike Bogh Manke (1922-1986) had one daughter, Karen. My father, James N. Updike (b.1917) had three children: Susan K. Updike Ridley, Mary E. Updike Nielsen (me), and David C. Updike.
According to our family information,James Garfield Updike was born near Sheridan, Missouri in 1880. His father, George Washington Updike, grandson of Peter C. Updike and Elizabeth Springer, was born in Illinois and served as a drummer boy with an Illinois regiment in the Civil War. Oral history has it that Peter and his brothers and cousins fought on opposite sides in the war. Our tradition has it that Peter's antecedents came from Henderson County, KY and their ancestors had come west with Daniel Boone from the Carolinas.
I recently located a marriage license (# 00000785) from Morgan County, Illinois, for a Peter C. Updike and Elizabeth Springer dated 2/18/1841. I haven't yet obtained a copy of this, but it is in the University of Illinois at Springfield depository.
I would like more information about Peter C. Updike and his ancestors.

Martha Ann NORVILLE/UPDY(I)KE

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with my search & puzzle...As I am at a loss!...I am researching Martha Ann NORVILLE - b: abt 1808/KY - d: abt 1852/MO. Martha Ann first married unknown UPDY(I)KE. Martha Ann was left a widow. Martha Ann and unknown UPDY(I)KE had two children that I know of: Peter and "Sissy". Martha Ann NORVILLE-UPDY(I)KE second married Caleb WILLIAMS...In looking at all the varying info. on the boards and trees I have discovered some of my info. does match others, but some of the names do not match up...for instance I have seen one Caleb WILLIAMS married to a "Sarah" UPDY(I)KE. A written family record also states that "our" Caleb WILLIAMS was a mail carrier...between Hanniabal, MO. and Paradise, CA. This written record is also where I got the name Martha Ann NORVILLE and the UPDY(I)KE info. from... I hope someone may be able to help me put the pieces together and figure out this mystery....I'm baffled!!!
Thank you in advance!
Researching the Updyke/Updike/Opdyke line from Seneca County, New York:

Charity (Updike) Pearl (181-1916) married John Pearl (1825-1858) in Seneca County, New York and had 3 girls: Elenora, Fanny and Cora Pearl. Two daughters married into the Pontius family while Fanny/Fannie married Abner Stahl.

Charity 68, is listed with siblings Maria 65 and Charles H. 66 in the 1900 Seneca County, Fayette census; Another Charles H. Updyke, age 38, is listed living next door with his family.

In the 1880 census she was with mother Nellie Updike 73 and sister Elearta (?) 44;

and in 1860, Charity was living with Eleanora Opdyke age 52 (unk relation), Maria Opdyke 25, Nathan N. Opdyke 23, and Charity 29 is there with her 3 daughters.

I'm trying to find additional relatives & determine the relationship between Charity Updyke and Eleanora - who is the age to reasonably be a mother or aunt...and if this is her mother, then who is Nellie? I have no real proof of her parents other than the census info above, though I'm still looking.

Would love to share info & photos with anyone researching this line. Mwoz_gen@msn.com

expectant child of Hezekiah, 1713, Hopewell, NJ

From the New Jersey Calendar of Wills

08 Jan 1713 Hope Carpenter of Jamaica, Queens Co., N. Y, will of. Wife Mary. Children--Hope, Aimon (Asmun), Hezekiah, John, Hannah (under age). Farm and land in Hopewell, Burlington Co., [now Mercer Co.], and land in Jamaica Township; personal property. Executors--the wife, sons Asmon, Hezekiah, John, with Samuel Firl and Thos. Burrows as assistants. Witnesses: Deborah Wood, Daniel Woolsey, Nehemiah Smith.
16 Aug 1713 Administration of the estate granted to John Muirhead, [husband of his daughter Hannah born in 1696] of Hopewell, who has purchased from the widow, Mary, and the three younger sons, Ashman, Hezekiah and John Carpenter, their several rights in the estate under the will.

13 Oct 1713 Hezekiah Carpenter, Hopewell, Burlington Co. [now Mercer Co.], blacksmith; will of. Wife Abigail and an expected child to inherit "All my estate." Executors: the wife, Thos. Byris and Jonathan Roberts. Witnesses: James Fitch, Edward Hart, Alexander Lockart. Proved 09 Dec 1713.

Hope Carpenter, Jr., settled in Elizabethtown, NJ. He had a daughter named Hannah or Nancy (both variations of Anne) born about 1741. The other family members all settled in Hopewell. Neither John nor Asmun appear to have had a daughter, Nancy. I think Nancy Carpenter, wife of William Updike, was the “expected” child of Hezekiah and Abigail Carpenter. William was born in Maidenhead, NJ, near Hopewell. William and Nancy Carpenter Updike had a son named Hope.

Can anyone confirm this theory?

Thanks for your help.

Mike Morrissey
Smith's Castles Celebrates 325th Anniversary

I wanted to alert descendants of Richard Smith and Lodowick Updike that Smith's Castle, the ancestral home in Wickford, RI, is 325 years old this year. Richard Smith Jr. built the house in about 1678 after his father's trading post had been burned by the Narragansett in 1676 in retaliation for the Great Swamp attack.

At the seasonal opening of the house on May 3, we will unveil new visitor orientation panels that describe the history of the site and house, including biographical materials about Richard Smith and his Updike descendants. The panels include a rarely seen color image of the 1722 portrait of Anstis (Jenkins) Updike, wife of attorney general Daniel Updike.

Smith's Castle has also published a companion catalog with more in-depth material on the site and its occupants from 1637 to 1939. The catalog will be sold in the museum gift shop for $12.50.

Looking forward to next year, we hope to plan an Updike family reunion if there is sufficient interest. Anyone interested in attending such an event, please email me. I look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you some day at the "Updike Mansion"!

Neil Dunay
President
Cocumscussoc Association at Smith's Castle
Looking for any info on Catherine Updike married to Aaron Dalrymple. Found this family in 1850 census, Warren Cty, NJ. Marriage listed in Hunterdon NJ Oct 22 1840, but two of the oldest children listed; Phebe, age 15 and Theodore, age 11 may not have been from this union. Most likely, Catharine was previously married. My ancestor, Theodore S. Dalrymple, changed his name after Civil War to Jackson Smith, stating (in pension file) that Dalrymple was his step-fathers name and Jackson Smith was his "real" name. He also states that his mother moved to Frenchtown later in life, but never gives her first name. Anyone know if Catharine had a first husband or who her parents were?

Mary Updike m. John Cole 1759, RI and MA

In the Op Dyck Genealogy (p.110) Mary Updike is listed as a child of Daniel Updike, b. 11 Apr 1727, d.1811, married John Cole 17 Jan 1759.
In the Wade Genealogy (p.3) it says John Cole married Mary Updike, daughter of Daniel Updike and Mary Jenkins, and she died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ichabod Wade. Elizabeth Cole married Ichabod Wade, born 1685, son of Thomas Wade and Elizabeth Curtis, at Taunton, MA. In his will dated 1747, he mentions 6 children, including Amos.

My records show Amos Wade was born in 1732, which is correct.
If Mary Updike Cole, Amos' grandmother, was born in 1747, how could she possibly be his grandmother?
Can someone tell me where this relationship is wrong?
Surely need some help here!
Thank you for whatever you may know that I don't....

I am trying to locate the parents of my father's grandfather James UPDYKE of Heidelburg, Lee, KY. His two eldest children, from a previous marriage, list Frankfort as their birthplace. So, it is quite possible that my James UPDYKE was from there as well. James was born in 1878 and died in 1966 in Heidelburg.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Frederick Clifford Updike

I'm seeking information on my mother's dad, Frederick Clifford Updike, born September 1, 1872; married Ella S.Stout March 2, 1895 in Mercer County, NJ. He died March 25,1940. They lived in Princeton and Lawrenceville, NJ. My mother Elsie Geneva was born June 13, 1896. The family bible is unclear whether his grandfather was John S.Updike born July 4, 1825
and died June 26, 1858; married Louisa Savage December 31, 1848. His father may have been Benjamin Calvin Updike, born December 23, 1849 and mother Emma G. Updike(?). They married October 23, 1869. I would like to determine if this lineage is accurate and, if so, the parents and grandparents of John S. Updike.

1880 Census-James Updike

Betty Omstead Scarborough was gracious enough to provide me with the results of an 1880 Census search for James Updike (Updyke). According to the findings, the only James Updike (1) in Franklin Co., KY was the son of Peter (30) and Caroline (37). According to the Jan. 22, 1920 Census for Lee Co., KY, James Updyke is 41. His youngest child is Caroline (my grandmother). Could this James Updyke be the son of Peter and Caroline Updike?

UPDIKE GENEALOGY WEBSITE

Hello all!

I would like to announce that I have an UPDIKE GENEALOGY website at: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?d...

My purpose is to supply a free service for all OPDYCK, OPDYCKE, OPDYKE, UPDYKE, UPDIKE, etc. families to post their lineage. The idea is to connect as many of us who wish to on one site for the purpose of sharing, confirming, and enhancing each others' data. I have presently about 980 people of 'the name' already there. I have both GYSBERT OP DEN DYCK'S and LOURIS JANSEN OP DYCK'S lines.

Those wishing to participate, please email me with your EARLIEST Opdyck/Updike etc. ancestor ONLY, and any concerns you may have...before you send me a GEDCOM or file of any kind. I don't want to offend anyone in any way. Some may not want any LIVING persons displayed; some may want names, but no other information (my PERSONAL preference). I am concerned with accuracy too, so please supply sources where possible, and perhaps most important of all, please notify me of any ERRORS that you find already there. I am also open to suggestions. The website is part of the Rootsweb World Connect project.

Most of the early info is based on "The Op Dyck Genealogy" by Charles Wilson Opdyke (1889). By the way, if anyone needs a copy of it, I have a source for them for $35.00 post-paid (the edition WITH photos). Some internet booksellers sell them for more than double that amount without the photos, and people say that they have to wait forever.

Kindest regards,
Dale A. Updike,
North Battleford,
Saskatchewan, Canada

Updike/Stockton connection

I do believe that I've made a connection. We(my newly found Stockton cousins and I are hoping that Archibald Stockton's little blue book is found with all important information).
We believe that Brazilai Grover Updike (b.1800,d.1848, son of Samuel J. Updike and Helena Grover) was married to Catherine Schenck.Their son, John S.Updike married Elizabeth Sullivan on Jan. 12, 1848. They produced 3 daughters, Nellie (spinster), Catherine (Kittie), and Anna Elizabeth (Annie). Catherine married John Calvin Stockton, and Anna married John Calvin's brother, Joseph S. Stockton. I have some marriage certificates and death certificates, and some family printed information (passed down). I will try to confirm that this John S. Updike is my ggg-grandfather by requesting marriage certificate from Hunterdon Co., NJ (Volume 3-237, officiator, Stokes). If anyone can confirm or has a reply, we'd love to hear from you!
Susan Stockton Gastrock

After David's death she married Stiles Beach and was burried as Jerusha Beach. Do you know who her parents are? Thanks, M
