Hello - I don't know if you are still looking for this information or not, but I just ran across your posting. I, too, was doing some research on Ada Lee Updyke and that got linked with your message. Anyway, in response, yes, Ethel Updyke Shaver (daughter of Junius Updyke) did marry Rex Shaver. Just thought I would pass this along.

Updyke: Nellie, Maria, Charles, Charity, Eleanor- Seneca Co, NY

Researching the Updyke/Updike/Opdyke line from Seneca County, New York:

Charity (Updike) Pearl (181-1916) married John Pearl (1825-1858) in Seneca County, New York and had 3 girls: Elenora, Fanny and Cora Pearl. Two daughters married into the Pontius family while Fanny/Fannie married Abner Stahl.

Charity 68, is listed with siblings Maria 65 and Charles H. 66 in the 1900 Seneca County, Fayette census; Another Charles H. Updyke, age 38, is listed living next door with his family.

In the 1880 census she was with mother Nellie Updike 73 and sister Elearta (?) 44;

and in 1860, Charity was living with Eleanora Opdyke age 52 (unk relation), Maria Opdyke 25, Nathan N. Opdyke 23, and Charity 29 is there with her 3 daughters.

I'm trying to find additional relatives & determine the relationship between Charity Updyke and Eleanora - who is the age to reasonably be a mother or aunt...and if this is her mother, then who is Nellie? I have no real proof of her parents other than the census info above, though I'm still looking.

Would love to share info & photos with anyone researching this line. Mwoz_gen@msn.com

Charles,

I'm new to this and it seems no one in the family knows anything beyond my grandfather (Harry John Updyke of Johnstown, PA). I know his father was Harry Calvin Updyke of Johnstown (married Hubertine Matilda Burkhart) and his father was John Calvin Updyke of Johnstown, PA. But thats it....the branch stops there...is there a link from your Updykes to John Calvin Updyke somewhere?

John Calvin Updyke's son Harry Calvin Updyke was born August 25, 1907. And Harry John Updyke was born 1934.

John Calvin Updyke
Born abt: – 1881? in Johnstown, Cambria Co. PA
Died:	?
Occupation: Steelmill
His Wife was Mary Elizabeth Skutchall
She was born abt. – 1887 ( not sure) or Dec 14, 1886
Died – May 6 1962 Johnstown, Cambria Co. PA

My grandfather Harry John Updyke said that Harry Calvin had another family somewhere in PA and that Hubertine and Harry Calvin divorced in 1945.

I don't know if any of this makes any sense....thanks in advance.

-Jason Updyke
jstlky@hotmail.com
Odenton, Maryland

Hi!

I am 1/2 Updike. I have an Updike Family History book published in the 1880's when my grandfather (Kansas branch) was a young boy. This book goes back to the 12th century to Weasel, Germany. As reformists, they fled the Catholics to Holland. Some went on to the Americas (New York). One married John Smith's (Pocahontas) brother. We are also suposedly related to Robert E. Lee and Mary Custis (George Washington's step daughter).

Emerson Opdyke (another spelling) was a Major General in the Union Army during the civil war. The book is large and has trees from all the clans.

My grandfather went to Wyoming where he started Updike Brother's Oil Company - still operational. My mother and her brother moved to Carmel, California. Most recently my cousin, Robert Updike, was the Fire Chief of Carmel.

The book shows, no matter the spelling, that we are all related. This is a copy of the original owned by my uncle, Claude Updike. My mother's cousin, Lee Updike, has an original. He lives in Yucaipa, CA.

In the 1880's we had two rich cousins who took the time and money to put it all together. I have uploaded alot of the information to sites on the net. Would take some time to upload it all.

Any questions, let me know. Please be patient with me though.

Thanks, Charlie Davis (note that Charles is popular)

Does anyone have any information on the Montgomery county, MO Updykes? My wife is a descendant of this family. The patriarch of this line is James Edward Updyke (Updike) born in PA in about 1839. He moved to MO after the civil war and for some reason changed the spelling of his name. I'm interested in researching all of the lines that descended from James.

4 January 1968 Tonawanda News
2 Persons Killed, 2 Others Injured In Collision
Bath, N.Y. (UPI) – Two persons were killed and two others seriously injured when a car and a pick-up truck collided head-on late Wednesday in nearby Kanona.
Killed were Warren Porter, 44, of Gillett, Pa., and his uncle, Clifford Updyke, 70, of Elmira. Authorities said both were passengers in an auto driven by Melvin Porter, 19, of the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga.
The teen-age Porter, also a nephew of Updyke and a Navy seaman stationed at Charleston, S. C., was transferred to the Veterans Hospital in Syracuse early today, and was in poor condition.
The driver of the truck, Arland Hoad, 44, of Bath, was listed in critical condition at Ira Davenport Hospital here.
Troopers said the Porter vehicle crossed the center line on Route 15, near the Route 53 intersection, and struck the pickup truck head-on on a bridge over the Cohocton River, troopers said.
Seeking info on Hattie Boyden, married Charles Updyke or Peter Charles Holmes Updyke. He helped finance the candidacy of William Jennings Bryan. I know this is sketchy, but this is from notes that I got from my father when I was young. I hope someone might have some info that would help me.

Thank you for the information.

Volner Updyke was my grandfather, who passed away in April, 1947. He is buried in Prairie Hill Cemetary, Fulda, Minn., along with his wife Mary Eliza Updyke (nee Rice).

Her parents were Oliver and Anna (nee Goldtrap) Rice.

I thought the name Goldtrap was familiar, but had to get the connection from my mother.

If you are interested I have some copies of paperwork filed with the War Department by Anna (Goldtrap) Rice seeking pension benefits for Oliver Rice's service in the Civil War.

I still haven't found Montgomery Updyke's burial site, but thanks for the information.

Today is the first time I have seen the name Updyke associated with my family.
I have a Birth Record for Stephen E. LASSO born January 31, 1890, white, male, to Mary and Joseph Lasso, Buffalo, New York.
Under Maiden name is UPDYKE. As far as I know Mary Lasso was Mary PAUL. Mary Paul maried Joseph LASSO in 1883 and she says she was not married before. I wonder if there was a mistake and Updyke was actually the maiden name of her mother?
Hoping to hear from someone.
Sincerely,
Nancy
great granddaughter of Mary Paul Lasso.
Mary Paul was born September 21, 1851 in West Galway. Saratoga County, New York.

This might be a lead for you. I found a Samuel M. Updyke who died on a Hospital Boat May 15, 1863, he was a member of the 134th Illinois Infantry Co.B. this same Samuel M. Updyke's wife Marietta Updyke applied for a widows pension Feb. 4, 1864 Application #46316 Certificate #17981, then there was the name of Charles Atwood named in the pension application on September 13, 1866 Application #133581 Certificate #97128. I have the pension and civil war file for Oliver Rice too. What I would like if you have it is any information that you would have on Mary Elizabeth (Rice) Upkykes, siblings, William, George Milton, and Ora Oliver. I am also looking for information on a few of the children of Volner and Mary's, Paul R., Orie V. Ralph Elmo and Oliver Herbert. Please email me direct so that if I have any further questions we do not have to go through the forum. email shonneen@fuse.net
I do not know if this is a connection for you or not. I have an obituary for a Volner Updyke that says his fathers and mothers name was Montgomery Updyke and Marietta (Bebee)Updyke. In the article is gives the following information about Montgomery. Montgomery was called for military service in the Civil War, and at the close of the war he stayed on to help nurse sick soldiers back to health. Hecontracted an illness himself and himself and died. Later Volners mother remarried a man by the name of Charles Atwood. Volner was born in 1860 in Dekalb, Illinois. Like I said I am not sure this is a connection or not.
