Upper research starting up again in the new year...contact me...Al
I will begin in the new year to dust off all of my Upper files and start into it again with a vengence after three years of neglect. I'd like you to all contact me so that we can set up a "group" of mutual interests, a coffee klatch of sorts, and support each other's research, off the general lists. I do not mount my info on the internet. I do not collect living information aside from names and relationships. I do not share info on message boards. I produce materials to put in libraries for all to use.
All Uppers appear to stem from one trunk planted on the shore of Snooks Brook, in an area called locally "the Angle," in Sussex, up on the north east remote corner of New Jersey, U.S. in about 1764-ish.
Late of the Palatines of southern Germany, via Amsterdam, Cowes-England, and Philadelphia, U.S.
Johann[es] Jerg Opfer is considered the patriarch who later allowed his name to be anglicized to "George Upper." He left New Jersey at the end of the Rev. War, c. 1789, and made his way to the Niagara River, crossed near Fort Erie and made his way to the present area of Allanburgh, Ontario, Canada, where he, along with the Vanderburgh's and other early settlers founded the community known by that name. He would be considered a "Late Loyalist." For his deed has written on it, "loyalist." and because of that, his descendants qualify for U.E. status. One of his sons, John, md a Caughill/ Caughell/ Coghill/ Coghell who was U.E. via her father. He later md a Guisso girl. John also served in the Fenian Rebellion on the British side and recieved a medal for his participation...I have a picture of him with his medal on, playing with his grand-children, my grand-mother and grand-uncle. My grand-mother, Sadie Idell Upper, was the last Upper of this line. The Uppers are buried in three cemeteries, the old settlers cemetery found in disrepair nearest Allanburg Rd., the old Upper Cemetery, beneath the trees along the canal, and the more modern cemetery, nearer their homestead along Beaver Dams road, on Town-Line Rd.
