Re: Uptain Name Origins

Pat Hill in Georgia may be a beginning. Both his and my geneological records end about 1900, most of mine derived from Hill's CD. Briefly, some brothers with last name of "Upton" came ashore in New Orleans. They then went to the colony of Maryland. From there they traved to Carolinas and Tennessee. The Upton brothers fought on both sides in the Revolutionary War. Those who were conscriped with the Crown were captured in Florida, transported to NewYork and remained there as prisoners until the end of the war, after which they returned to their brothers who had fought the British. One of the brothers was George W. Upton. Some how his last name got changed on public records and he kept the name, a name that is unique. Thus, all Uptains are related. If you cannot contact Pat Hill send me your post office box number and I will send you one of his CDs. I believe I have one or two around.

There is a Jodell Hadsall listed in Benton City, WA. She is related to Charles Gordon Hadsall also in Benton City, WA. I need to find out if Jodell's real name was Geraldine Hadsall and if she had a child she gave up for adoption in 1952. She also had another child prior to 1952 according to the birth records. No father was listed. Please contact me if you have info that is related. I may have info on your possible sister sibling born in 1952 if you are related to her through Jodell. The female adopted child was taken to Scottsdale AZ in Sept. 1952 then returned to Illinois.

Since I have posted the message, I have found out some more information, but it still has some holes. As far back as my granny can remember, the name has always been Uptain, but she can only remember to her grandfather. Her 90th birthday was the 26 of Dec, but nobody on the Uptain side came, she's not really in touch with them since her father (King Joseph Uptain) died when she was 4. But anyways, I'm more than happy to share information with you. My email is indegurl408@msn.com . thanks again for your reply.

Colleen

Hello, I am Shaun Uptains daughter, I was looking up our family when I saw that message! I was actually born on June 17, 1990. Ryan Uptain was born on July 8, 1991. You spelled my fathers name wrong, it is spelled ShaUn not ShaWn. Well I have to go now. Please change these errors. Thank you
Kirsten
Uptain

Colleen, Owen Uptain was my ggrandfather's first cousin. His name was Upton as far back as his ggrandfather John from what I have found. I did not know that he had changed the spelling. Many families had both spellings for siblings. I think it was probably because of the lack of education during this time and whenever they would give their name to an employer, etc - the name was spelled as that person decided. After a while that became the spelling used. A lot of people from the Walker County area of Alabama went to Chicago "to earn a living" . Farming was a hard life - my own Dad worked in Chicago for a year or so. His step-brother lived there most of his life and raised a family. My Dad is Dark complexioned also and had dark black hair until he was in his late 60's then it turned white almost overnight. I am sure this is from the Indian ancestry. No, we are not "Mutts", we are True Blue Americans <grin> By the way, my Dad will be 80 this May and one of his uncles will be 85 in April. Ggranny was 86. I don't know what info you have by now, but I would be happy to help if I can. I have no info past Owen Jasper other than Nancy as his wife/born 1860 in Alabama. I would love to fill in the blanks.

In any case, Lots of Luck
Carol
Re: Uptain Family and searches

The name Uptain is an offshoot of the Upton family. Everyone with this name goes back to Rev. War soldier George Upton who lived in Georgia and Tennessee before settling in northeast Alabama. Some of his sons took to spelling the name Uptain. There is a great deal of information available on this family, but before it will be helpful to you, you need to do a little for yourself. You speak of your father and his brother in the present tense, so start out by asking one of them what his father's name was. You may even get lucky and find he knows his grandfather's name and where he lived.

Man, sounds like I have extended family up in here. My sisters name is Jennifer as well. LOL. Also, I was told that our Family name was changed from Upton to Uptain by my grandpa. I was also told that my granpa was in the military and missed pearl harbor by 1 day. If this strikes a chord family wise let me know, that would be cool to know some extended family on the first day in here. I think I will try the Pat Hill route aswell. If you think it is a good start.

I just recently became interested in finding out more about my family name and it's historical refrences. That was the easy part. The only information I have available to me is fragments that my parents gave me as I grew up and my parents names. I also now I have a pretty large family, but I don;t know any of there names. My name is obvious. My dads is Gary Uptain my mom Is Vickie Uptain (Melton=maiden) Gary has a brother named Wayne. And thats as far as I know. Any ideas on where I should start to look. There are no family records outside of the information I just gave. I know my grandpa was in the military and the IRS on my dads side. And I was once told that our name was originally "Upton" and latter changed to uptain. But there is no proof of this. Thanks for any suggestions

Hi Guys,
I was wondering if you ever contacted Pat Hill, ordering his
Upton CD. As an Uptain, you would be his Upton #3 Family. On the 500 plus pages of that family, you would find your ancestors up through the beginning of the 20th century. Beyond that you would be on your own. At this late date, the Uptains (aka Uptons) are scattered all over the place. For example, type in the name "Uptain" on your Yahoo web site and examine what comes up.

Hi Marilyn Coulson,
I have from Pat Hill's CD a listing for Newton Roscoe Uptain: no birth or death dates. However, he is the off-spring of one of three marriages: Emlo M. "Nilla" Barnes b. 1861; Tinney _______ d. circa 1932 who, if I read it correctly, is the mother of four children: 1) Delsie Marie Uptain who married J.D. Faulkner; 2) Thomas Alonzo Uptain jr. who was adopted by the Pate family; he later had four children, but it is unknown which name they took into their lives; 3) John Wesley Uptain adopted by the Kidd family; he later married Donna Lynn and they had four children; and 4)Newton Roscoe Uptain but I have no additional information; 3)Virgie _______; However, I again recommend that you contact Pat Hill at >pathill@netzero.com< who is forever updating his Upton (Uptain) CD Encyclopedia. He may well have additional information. If he does, please share it.
with me. grant at >gasup@pmt.org<
