Not much info to go on here but I am trying to find relatives of Cecilia McKenzie (Urquhart). She married Donald McKenzie born abt 1842 but I don't have a birth date for Cecilia or a marriage date. I do know their children were Duncan 1867, Bella / Isabella 1869, Katie / Catherine 1871, Kenny / Kenneth 1873 & Hugh 1875 and as far as I'm aware are all Scottish. On the 1881 there is no mention of Cecilia assume either dead or divorced (Hugh was married 1897 and she is on certificate as deceased) but Donald has a neice living with him called Helen Urquhart born abt 1878. Any help with the Urquhart / McKenzie clan would be brilliant.

1841 Drymen, Stirlingshire census.
George Urquhart, 65, agr. lab., born Scotland
James Urquhart, 20, born Stirlingshire
Isabella Urquhart, 15, born Stirlingshire
George McDonald, 14, born Scotland (son of Janet and Angus?)
Jean Bauchop, 6, born Stirlingshire

Some baptisms of children of George Urquhart and Christian MacGregor are:

George Urquhart, christened on May 9, 1816 in Drymen
James Urquhart, born March 23, 1820, christened on May 9, 1820 in Drymen
Isobel Urquhart, born March 10, 1822, christened on April 4, 1822 in Drymen

I also believe that Janet Urquhart, who married Angus MacDonald, was the daughter of George and Christian/Christy.

I see a marriage for Janet and Angus on July 23, 1825 in Drymen, Stirling (the bride's father is George), and again on July 24, 1825 in Barony,Lanark. I have seen this before, where there are two marriages, and I guess it is to satisfy the families that live in two different places.

Based on the 1841 census, George was not born in the county of Stirlingshire, and was born c1776.

So, I am wondering if this George is the son of John Urquhart and Isabel Fraser, who was born on June 23, 1776 and christened on August 21, 1776 in Inverness, Inverness-shire.

Best regards.

Robert Urquhart and Elspet Reid c1841 Old Deer, Aberdeenshire

Greetings.

When considering the following census:
1841 Stuart Village West Side, Old Deer, Aberdeenshire
Robert Urquhart, 63, crofter, born Scotland
Elspet Urquhart, 51, born Aberdeenshire
Ann Urquhart, 8, born Aberdeenshire

this 1841 census makes me wonder if this is the Robert Urquhart christened on Jan. 1, 1780 in Inverness, Inverness-Shire to parents John Urquhart and Isabel Fraser. When reading the Inverness church records on LDS microfilm, I did not find a marriage for Robert there. He is not buried in the Chapel Yard in Inverness, per the monumental inscriptions book.

Elspet is still living in Old Deer in 1851. A widow? Her sons Robert and Donald are living with her. I do not have a death for Robert between 1841 and 1851?

From a tree on Ancestry, it appears that Elspet died on April 26, 1872 in Old Deer.

I have a tree posted on Rootsweb with John and Isabel's family line.

Best regards.

Hi Jenn,
I am so glad to get a reply on this Urquhart family five years after I posted my query. A volunteer for Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness at the San Antonio library helped me get newspaper articles about the family. So instead of getting information from somebody as I first hoped I will be able to share some newspaper information. I will contact you as you asked and then I will also post some of the articles if I find that I have not already done so.
Mary
I am the granddaughter of Inez Urquhart and William Thornton. I recall Ralph very well from my childhood as he was an extrovert and also a favorite of my grandmother. They were both big personalities who loved to socialize.

I have a variety of information that my grandmother told me about her extended family and that I wrote down, as well as many family photos.

Is anyone still interested in communicating about this? I'd be curious to learn more about the family and to try to pool our information.
I have Sam Leask in my family tree - thanks for the information I received from message boards. Sam Leask married Donella Urquhart in 1895 and they had 2 daughters.
Sam Leask returned to Scotland in 1907 accompanied by his daughters whom he brought up on his own. Can anyone tell me whatever happened to their mother Donella?

Thank you for your info. I would really appreciate more detail as I don't have anyone in George's line or John and Jane's. No doubt you will have seen that George's great great grandmother came to Tamania as a convict in 1848. i'm particularly interested as I live in WA and we have other Urquhart descendants in Victoria and NSW.

James Stanley Urquhart states on his WWII "Old Man's Draft" Registration Cards that he was born on March 18, 1891 in San Pedro, California.

You can look at his registration cards at: http://www.fold3.com/browsemore/h8cJ-LB2XKX7gqrxze3dO_-Sjus7...

1930 Manhattan (Districts 1001-1249), New York, New census
Stanley Urquhart, head, 36, married at age 33, born California, father born Scotland, mother born Canada, linotyper in publishing
Nicoletta Urquhart, wife, 33, married at age 30, born New York, father born Italy, mother born Italy
James S Urquhart, wife, 2-1/12, born New York, father born California, mother born New York

You should order James Stanley's original Social Security application. He had to write his parents names on it, including his mother's maiden name. It is usually more accurate than a death record, because James Stanley is providing the info, whereas someone else is providing the info on his death record. His Social Security number is 100-07-3370 and it was issued in New York. His birth date is shown as March 18, 1889, and his death date is shown as February 1971 in Pinellas Co., Florida. You can order a record for $27.00US, from: http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/118/~/ac...

Thanks for your reply. My William was the son of James Urquhart and Jessie Fraser and was married to Marion Dalrymple. I am unsure if the mariage certificate I found for James Urquhart and Helen Munro is the correct one as the names have aliases.

John Smith Urquhart of Elgin Scotland, (d. 1897)

John Smith Urquhart married Eliza Gill on 27 December 1881 in Elgin Scotland. Eliza died in 1894 and John married another woman, Mary Simon and he died on13 February 1898 The family folklore is that he died “under mysterious circumstances” and that his second wife helped make those circumstances. Shortly after his death, his children by Eliza were put into an orphanage.

His children include Elizabeth Jane Urquhart (b 3 October 1883), Norman Dean Urquhart (b 1 April 1884), Constance Helen Urquhart (b 24 Feb 1889), and Ronald Munro Urquhart (b 25 October 1893).

John’s parents were Alexander and Elizabeth Dean. Eliza’s parents were Robert Gill and Jane Scott who lived in Elgin.

I have very little data on the Urquhart family in Scotland and no data on Alexander at all.

Does anyone have any data on my Urquhart lineage???
Urquhart of Salford, Lancashire

Seeking info on the Urquhart families of Salford, Lancashire.

My g-g-grandfather was Robert Urquhart (1826-1878) of Salford. He was a Greenwich Pensioner. Family lore says his family was originally from Inverness. He married Fanny Woodman in Manchester in 1868. He was listed in the 1871 census of Salford (at 97 Slater St.), and he baptised two children, Ethel and Beatrice, at the St. Bartholomew church in Salford in 1874 and 1877 (when he was living on Gloucester St.) He died in Salford in April 1878. His occupation was listed as a Market Constable or Market Inspector.

Do you have any Urquhart lines in Salford?

Thanks for any tips!
Chris
cbaer@vineyard.net
Sorry, the parents of Margaret Clark are unknown to me. My Resolis records don't go back to 1400 so I cannot confirm the marriages you mention. However I have heard that the Munro and Urquhart Clans were neighbours.

Now this is incredibly interesting because this marriage follows a similar pattern of marriages between these families in the 1400s. An Elizabeth Urquhart married a John Munro, their G-grandchild married a Dunbar. I know this isn't eexactly relevant to your question but I think it will help you further back in your tree. But you said that a Robert married a Margaret Clark, do you know if Margaret Clark was the daughter of a Dinah Clark?
