Hi David
My grandfather, Alfonso, had 2 other brothers that I know of that came thru Ellis Island -- Filippo (born 1884) and Giuseppe (born 1878). Where in the family is Vito? I know my mother had said there was a brother who wanted to come to the US with Alfonso & Filippo but he couldn't for some reason. Mom had said she remembered a photo of the brother in the house. I know there were at least 2 sisters, Antonina & Francesca that came over as well.
Alfonso had married Carmela Mercante, from Villa Frati before they came over, probably sometime in 1901/02. Their first child, Santo, was born in 1903.
Filippo married one of Carmela's, Margherita Mercante. They all settled in Northern NJ,
I don't know too much about Giuseppe except that he came over with his wife Margherita Barberia in 1902, I think, with their 2yr old son, Caligero.
Kathleen O'Shea
kaos1023@optimum.net
Hello,

Francesca Urso Pernice and Filippo Giuseppe Dispenza are two of my 2nd great grandparents.
I'm descended from Alfonso's brother Vito. Alfonso was born May 4 1876.
My research on this line has stalled and I only have information on 13 of Alfonso’s ancestors.

I don't know why but my post are now labeled anonymous.

You can email me at d_j_salvia@hotmail dot com

David

Hello. I am looking for my father, Joseph John Urso and from all of what you are saying, sounds as if you may be my uncle. My fathers name is Joseph John Urso Jr born in Massachusetts on or around Feb 2, 1944. I have an old phone book that belonged to him that lists the names Richard Urso with a 408 area code as well as a Rose and Rita Ferrante. Could you please tell me if I am talkng with the right family? I am looking to connect with anyone from my father's family. I have other information such as his social security number and previous addresses that can help confirm if we are lookng for the same person and may be related.

Re: Finding family on line or history on Urso

Maureen, I am also married to an Urso but one whose family lives in Connecticut, USA. His grandparents were Paulo and Giuseppa (known as Josephina to him. He was from Siracusa Sicily and came to the states in 1906 age 21. Her maiden name was Salafia and she was from Villasmunada, Siracusa Sicily in 1913 at age 16. Paulo and Josephina had 7 children Jimmy, Frank, Antonette, Toni, Sammy, Sally and Joey (who died in late teens or early twenties of heart disease).Of course their names were very Italian, except for Antonette, and were Americanized.
Not sure if this will be of any help to you but if your husband's family originated in Sicily there could be a connection.
Who gave him the name Isadore Urso. (was his father an Urso?. I have a great uncle that came to the US around 1906 to Winsted, CT. Stayed a very short time and the rumour was that it was because he got a girl pregnant and he bolted back to his wife in Italy. Eventually moving to France and settling there. Timing would have been the same.

I am trying to find any info on my family's genealogy. My father-in-law's grandfather was Salvatore (Sam) Urso who was married to Francesca Affronto (which later got changed to Affronti). Sam was born in 1870 and Frances in 1875 in Italy. They migrated through New Orleans and made their way to Brazos County, TX. They had eight children, Laporta, Antonio, Josephine, Mary, Philip, Lillie (Lena), Anthony, and Sara. Josie and Mary moved to Houston, but the rest lived in Bryan. Any help on Sam and Frances' parents and/or siblings would be grateful.

My husband's family comes from the same area as your family but his grandparents setteled in New britian, Conn. I find it interesting that the same names run through the family; he has an uncle salvatore (we call him sammy).
His grandfather was Paulo, grandmother Josephina.
They were supposed to have come to America from the same town you mention, returned to Sicily, then returned for good to the US.
There are a lot of Urso's in the Connecticut area my husband is from, not so far from Mass. My husband has often said his grandparents had siblings come to the states but didn't keep in touch.
Hope this is some help, if you find interesting info, keep in touch.

Hi,

I'm trying to track down the Urso family history. The Ursos that I'm researching are originally from Sicily and settled in Haverhill, Massachusetts. My father's name is Rosario. He had a brother Salvatore (Sam), and two sisters; Josephina (Josie, Josephine) and Maria (Mary).

I believe that my father's parents were named Corrado and Grace (Grazio), who lived on RIver Street in Haverhall, and later moved to South Elm Street in Bradford. I believe that both Corrado and Grace are buried in St. Patrick's cemetary in Haverhill.

I believe that my grandparents arrived in America some time around 1911-1912.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
--Wayne Urso

Isadore Urso

My father was Isadore Urso and was born in NY City (as far as I know) on March 21,1908. He was taken to the NY Foundling Hospital on April 3, 1908 by a woman who gave her name as Mrs. Parker. She claimed he had been abandoned by his mother. My father rode the Orphan Train to ND in 1912 and was "indentured" to Michael and Mary (Mayme) Costello, who changed his name to Jay C. Costello and raised him as their own child. The New York Foundling Hospital tells me they were unable to obtain a birth certificate because his mother's name was not known. This is the extent of my knowledge of my father's life/ancestry prior to coming to ND. Would appreciate any information anyone can give me.

jim, I have been researching my Father's family history for a little while and found that my great uncle Sebastiano Urso who ultimately ended up living in France, originally left Sicily, and emigrated to the United States in 1906. He had gone to stay in Connecticut but I don't know how long he stayed, he eventually went back to Sicily because he got a girl pregnant and did not want any responsibilities. Since your dad was born in 1907 and lived in an orphanage, I thought I would see if there is any connection?

Urso and Gallo

I am looking for some information on my father's side of the family. My grandfather Salvatore Urso, born around 1890 in Floridia, Sicily had three brothers, One Giuseppe Urso, died young and had only one child who recently died in West Hartford, CT. One supposedly left Italy and went to Egypt (Concetto Urso) no-one has heard from him since, I have some leads that he may have emigrated to Australia after Egypt. The other one, Sebastiano Urso, came to the US in 1906, got a woman pregnant in CT. He was only 20 and took off back to Italy. He then went on to have three children I believe illigetimately because the children go by the name gallo, Ninetta Gallo Sayag, Concetto Gallo and Constantino Gallo.

Ninetta and Concetto are both deceased and never had any children, I am looking for any descendants of Constantino, do not know what happened to him, he was last known living in France or Morocco. I also would be curious to know if any child was born to an URSO in 1906 or 1907 in the US probably in CT or close to that could be Sebastiano's child. And also if anyone has any info Concetto Urso that went to Egypt please let me know.

FYI: My great grandparents were Concetto Urso married to Antonina Adorno.

Lisa,
I have not yet done extensive research on my father's side yet as I am working on My mother's side from Lentini, Sicily. My Dad's side is from Floridia and all I have so far on my great-grandmother is that her father was Giuseppe Adorno and her mother was Carmela Gallito. Both from Floridia. Interestingly enough my great uncle Sebastiano Urso came to the US in 1906 or 1907 for a short while, went to stay with friends in Winsted, CT.

The story goes, he got someone pregnant there and left the country immediately. That is all I know. Keep in touch as I will eventually be doing alot more extensive research on the Adorno's through Floridia's films at the local mormon church. I can be e-mailed directly at urso-vieiral@espn.com

Joseph: I am doing research on the Ursoy name. I too thought Urso might be Ursoy's name in Italy. He was born in 1859 according to the 1900 census. It shows he was from Italy by doesn't say where. It also says he immigrated into the U.S. in 1883. I was at the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne when I found this out. It is supposed to be the 2nd leading place on Geneology (behind Salt Lake City's Mormon Church facility ( I was there too)). spisconski@aol.com
