Just jumping in here i the middle of this thread! As a rule, The USSERY line is not Cherokee. Some have married Cherokee wives etc as some moved to Reservations / indian land as they moved 'west'. There is a notable movememt from v. early mentions of the USSERY surname in Virginia (1660s) then moving down te colonies to the carolinas, then GA, TN, AL etc. A large contingent of mine (now called USREY) moved to IN. Others not knowingly related of USSERY / USREY then to Arkansas and other states.

I would not know the blood line of any one individual. There are ruomurs of Cherokee in my lines too - and a couple x gr grandmothers I have no parental/birth records for who could well have been native american....

Ardie,
My files show Nancy married James Almond and her sister Annice married James' brother Thomas Almond. I don't know if their marriages were in Virginia or if they were in Anson County, North Carolina. The Usserys migrated from Lunenburg County, Virginia to North Carolina sometime between 1758 and 1762. William Ussery, Sr. settled in Granville County, North Carolina and his son William Ussery, Jr. settled in what was then Anson County, North Carolina. They lived in the section that was to become Montgomery County in 1779.

My notes show that both James and Thomas and their wives went to Elbert County, Georiga and then on to Burke County, Georgia. Annice and Nancy's sister Mary, married Solomon Gross and they also went to Georgia. I show they went to Warren County, Georgia.

I wish I could offer you some type of documentation, but most of my information on that part of the family I got from conversations with John Martin Usry who published the Usry/Ussery Bulletin or from Isaac London who was editor and owner of the old Rockingham Post Dispatch in Richmond County, North Carolina. Ike was county historian for Richmond County and worked with a number of Ussery researchers in the 1940's and 1950's. Sadly both John and Ike are now deceased and Ike's files in the North Carolina Archives don't have any information on your particular line of Usserys. Annice and Nancy Ussery had a brother named Thomas Ussery, Esq. who is my 4th great grandfather. I did find the original of his will in Ike London's papers in the North Carolina Archives.

John Ussery

Rog,

I'm in North Carolina. I descend from Richard's uncle and aunt, William Thomas Ussery, Sr. and Minerva Judith Mayes. This line also has a lot of bad information that was distributed by some researchers from the early 1900's through the early 1940's. Took me years to find how where the bad information came from, who wrote it and how it got into so many books that people use for docuentation.

Good Luck.

John Ussery
Sorry, forgot something. I am not sure about her being born in Spotsylvania county, as it appears most of this group seems to have been born in Lunenburg County, VA.

Her father is listed as born in New Kent or Hanover County, although everything points to him being born in Lunenburg County, and his will was probated in Lunenburg.

I am looking through Lunenburg information at the moment, hoping to determine what county it actually is. There is a large history of Ussery's in this county, and it stands to reason it would most likely be the right one.

Drop a line if you would like!

Pat

No problem at all. If you would like to contact me concerning the Ussery family, my email address is patty719@msn.com

My g-grandmother was Susan Josephine Ussery - she married John Joseph Roe. Some people have Susan's middle name as Joanna, and in fact my mother claimed it was Joanna. But all the records I have seen say Josephine.

I don't have a massive amount on the Ussery line - mostly my direct ancestry and the siblings on them. But we can sure discuss what I have, if you need them.

Pat

I have an Annis "Annie" Ussery in my information - do not know if information is totally correct.

Information I show has no date of birth or location, but says she married Samuel Ragsdale on 20 March 1788 at Warren County, NC. She died December 1824 at Claiborne County, MS.

Reference to back up marriage to Ragsdale is reflected in her father's will, dated 24 November 1803.

Father's name: John Richard Ussery III and Mary Elizabeth Mask.

patty719@msn.com

I am going by your last name you used - Yarbrough. Are you related to the Ussery that married into the Roe family? My g-grandmother was Susan Joanna (or Josephine) Ussery. She married John Joseph Roe in 1867 in Kauffman County, Texas.

Susan was the daughter of Merriweather Hurt Ussery and Mary Elizabeth Reel.

Patricia Quinn Meigs

I am trying to confirm the information I have on a Elizabeth Usry/Ussery who sold property in Robertson's Colony TX ( Now Limwestone County.
She may have been the widow of Samuel Frost who was killed by Indians at Parker Fort in 1836.

A Ussery family website has Lucy Duty-Parker, wife of Silas Mercer Parker, remarrying after he was killed by Indians to a Usry and having a son named Benjamin Milam Usry (1838-1902. Lucy apparently divorced him and remarried a Strather/Strother and then finally to a William Roberts in 1844.

Any leads to sourced information would be appreciated.

Sounds like William F Ussary, son of John U. 1760-1828 and Elizabeth Hendley 1746- ?. John, son of William U. 1727-1811 and Sarah Bates 1725 -1831. William son of William T. Ussery 1692-1772 and Minerva j. Hayes 1710-1786. William T. son of John Thomas Ussary 1672-1750 and Sarah Blackwell 1674-1770. All this is questionable of course and should be more researched - especially the older ones but I think it might right. Good Luck, Darwin

All of my information, and admittedly, it is based on the research of others, indicates that Samuel's ancestors came from England to Virginia and migrated down to SC from there. I don't have any primary source information to indicate where they originated. I would be very interested in seeing your information - especially the research on their coming from Ireland. I take all information with a grain of salt, unless I can verify it with primary sources, so I'm not completely sold on the information that I have. Here is the web address/link to the family tree from which I got much of my information.
Thanks so much for responding! I also had Samuel as Rebecca's father, but that simply did not track, but I put it out of my mind to work on other lines. I've come back to the Usserys, and so this is the first huddle to overcome.
My e-mail is sallymac1974@yahoo, and I'll sure to let you know if I turn up anything.
And while I'm sure you have already done this, I looked over the census records for the Lancaster & Camden District in 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, and for the 1800-1820 time frame, there was only one Ussery available - Richard. In 1830, Elizabeth is listed as well as one other. Also, the Truesdell was on the same page in one record and within a page or two on another. I speculate that Rebecca is a child of that house or possibly Richard's granddaughter for that reason alone. I'm glad to see that someone else may agree!
I hope to hear from you soon.
Sally

I'm also descended from this line - James Truesdell & Rebecca Ussery's son J. Henry Truesdell & his wife Drucilla Cauthen.
I live in Camden and have spent quite some time in our local archives. I was there just the other day, and one local researcher said that Rebecca's mother was a Cato. However, that is the first time I have heard that, but I wanted to pass that possible lead along. Apparently most of the family is buried out at Hanging Rock Cemetery, but there are two of those. I've not been able to get to either one as yet.
In short, I share your desire to sort out where Rebecca fits into the family. I would be more than interested in anything that you have, and I will, of course, be more than happy to share my information.
Which of James and Rebecca's children is your ancestor? I may have some information on that line.

Hello John,

Thanks for the info. I recently got a pointer to the work of Rev Dean Ussery and hope to get the information in the mail in the next few weeks.

I'd love to find a source document on this relationship, though I am not sure one exists. As you may have already guessed, I am descended from the Ussery line through Rebecca and her husband James Truesdale.

I've recently spoken to a number of Ussery's in Kershaw/Lancaster Counties. Out of curiosity, are you in that area?

Thanks again for responding!

Rog
Hi, and thanks for responding!

I am descended frm James Truesdale and Rebecca Ussery through their daughter Mary Hollingsworth Truesdale who married Eli Williams. As noted in my previous posting I am trying to determine (with some type of documentation) Rebecca's parents.

I have been in touch with a descendant of Richard Ussery (b. 1731) who actually lives on Richard's original farm - Charles M Ussery. He has a theory that our Rebecca was either the the daughter of Richard Jr (son of Richard b. 1731) or perhaps the widow of Richard Jr. Either way, thus far there is no proof on either relationship.

On a positive note, Richard Sr's grave has been rediscovered and that of his son Richard Jr. Both of these graves are more or less in Charles Ussery's backyard, which used to be one of the church cemeteries you mentioned. I would be happy to give you his contact info if you email me privately.

Thanks and if I learn more I will certainly let you know.

Rog

Thank you. That is the first solid lead I've ever had. Most records leave a generations gap between Annice and her "parents". It shows that they died "before" she was born. I'm hoping this will put me on the right trail. But you never know, as there were several Anne's and Annice's in the Ussery family.
