Death of Mrs. Jacob Uthe (OBITUARY in Hazleton, PA paper on 11/22/1909)

Mary A., wife of Jacob Uthe, died at her home, 602 Carson Street, Saturday morning, after months of intense suffering from Bright's disease. Mrs. Uthe was a thoroughly christian woman and prepared for death. Before life departed she requested that "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," her two favorite hymns, be sung at her funeral.

Mrs. Uthe was prior to her marriage Miss Mary Dipple, of this city. She was a daughter of the late William Dipple, who died four years ago. She is survived by her husband, Jacob Uthe, the well-known plasterer, and two children, Dorothy May and Russell. John Dipple, of Philadelphia; Charles Dipple of Nescopeck, and Jacob Dipple of New York are her brothers, and Mrs. Martin Koch, of Allentown; Mrs. John Raabe and Miss Maggie Dipple, of this city, are her sisters. Mrs. Uthe was 40 years old and was married 20 years ago. She was a member of the Grace Reformed Church and one of Hazleton's esteemed ladies.
She will be buried from that edifice on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Her two favorite hymns will be sung and interment will take place in the Vine street cemetery.

Uthe Family - Four Brothers

I am a descendant of Christopher Frederic Uthe who was born in 1811 and died during the Civil War in Warren, MS. I have read that there were four brothers who came to the America about the same time: Christopher Frederic Uthe who settled in Chicago, Johannn Christopher who settled in Iowa, Henry Martin who settled in Ohio, and a fourth brother of which I have no information but also supposedly settled in Ohio. Does anyone have any info on the fourth brother?

While researching New York Passenger lists, I found a Henry "Uhde" with his wife Eva Justina and children Wilhelm and Wilhelmine who arrived on the brig "Helene" on June 3, 1844. This seems to fit with known information on Henry Martin Uthe. Apparently traveling with them was the Christopher "Krebs" (sp) family. Henry's wife Eva maiden name is listed as "Kreps" in other records. I am wondering if anyone has researched if Eva is the daughter of Christopher, perhaps by a first wife. Both families are listed as being from "Wulfeis(?)edb". I've tried various letter combinations for the "?" but no luck. Does anyone know of this place as it would like provide an answer as to where the Uthe family originated in Germany?

I'd love to hear any info. After posting the first message I was able to get in touch with Uthes in Chicago... son or daughter of Leonard and Betty. Lloyd Kenneth Smith was my grandfather's brother aka my grand uncle. All those who knew Lloyd say he was quite a partier and played piano in various types of shows throughout the midwest. I have several family photos of Lloyd. The Uthes I contacted sent me a lot about Lloyd... a "post-dated" birth certificate and some other neat things.

Lloyd's brother Stanley, my grandfather, moved from Brainerd, Minnesota, from where they both hailed, to Chicago in 1937 and died there in 1963. It is reasonable to think that Stanley chose Chicago because Lloyd was already there and that perhaps people who are now living and knew Lloyd also knew my grandfather.

Please contact me at timsmithnc@gmail.com... the previously posted email is no longer valid.

Thanks,
Tim Smith

John Uthe, and Kate Uthe (his dau.?), of Dubuque Co., IA abt 1890

I have two original Cabinet Card photographs of “John Uthe and his first wife” and “Kate Uthe” which I would like to get back to family members. Each photo was taken by the Lenz Bros. Photographers in Dubuque (Dubuque Co.) IA.

Photo of “John Uthe and first wife” was taken at their wedding in about 1880-1885, and both John and his wife look about 25-30.

Photo of Kate Uthe shows her at her first communion, wearing a white dress and veil, holding a prayer book and rosary. She looks to be about age 10, and it is my theory that this was taken about 1895-1900, based on the type of photo.

I was not able to locate John Uthe and daughter Kate in the 1900 census in Iowa, so I cannot verify dates of birth. Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to John Uthe, and Kate Uthe.

German search site ... and a domestic database I found

It doesn't have a whole lot of UTHE names on it, but I found sort of a neat RootsWeb-like site in Germany at:

http://www.genealogienetz.de/

You can opt for the English version if your German is as rusty as mine.

What does have a lot of Illinois UTHE-related info on it is a database I stumbled onto at Ancestry.com for those who subscribe there. Scroll through their listings menuing to the:

Prairie Farmer's Reliable Directory: Will and Southern Cook County, Illinois, 1918

As the title imples, it's sort of an early telephone book. The twist is that *ALL* the occupants of a home are listed as well as the maiden name of the wife! I was able to fill in a bunch of blanks. It fills a gap for the early 20th century where the online Illinois Marriage Index leaves off. ( http://www.sos.state.il.us/cgi-bin/archives/marriage.s )

Baher Surname

I am trying to find information on the surname of Baher. It was my Grandmother's maiden name. Her name was Florence Edgington Baher was born on February 27, 1897 in Emmett County in Iowa. Her father was Clarence Walter Baher born at MaD 9 Penn state line. Her mother was Mamie Lillian DeHarris born in Minn. My Grandmother married my Grandfather Robert Judson Hotchkiss Jr. and they lived Sanger, North Dakota. There is also a Richard Reichardt who is researching the Baher family. We are uncertain as to if we are related or not as there is very little information on the Baher's. His Grandmother had been married and divorced from a Baher and they had had 5 sons. When she remarried 3 of the boys took the new husbands name while the remaining 2 kept the name of Baher. He has told me that know one ever mentioned the Baher that his Grandmother had been married to and that all 5 of her son's have now passed away.
I would appreciate any help that can give me.Thank You. I have also started a Baher message board here at familyhistory.com.

Laurie thiede
E-MAIL: latede@yahoo.com

Hi,

The Christopher Uthe who fought in the Civil War and is buried at Natchez National Cemetery (I'm going by memory here, so I might have the wrong National Cemetery) is not the Christopher Uthe that you're looking for. Your Christopher Uthe seems to be the one who settled first in Ohio, remarried, moved to Iowa, and is buried at Greenwood Cemetery at Quasqueton.

Someone was kind enough to send me the cemtery records for the Uthes for that county.
David,
I have tried reaching you at the websites you have given and have been unable to reach you. I am having trouble finding my grandfather listed as one of Sarah Frey and
Fred Uthe. My grandfather, John Christopheer, was born in Benton County on May 15, 1872. He was married to Martha Jane Tucker. There are many Tuckers in Iowa. I am also trying to find the 2nd wife and will look through all my info as think I did see the name. They must have moved to the Madison, S.D. area soon after marrying. They had 4 children. Fred Uthe, Louella Uthe/Rubin, Les Uthe and my mother Mildred
Martha Uthe/Spawn. The only thing I know for certain is that my great grandfather, Fred, was really mean to my grandpa and he ran away from home. I'm wondering if Sarah didn't die and Fred married again. I do know that great grandfather Fred and his father are buried in the Madison cemetary. They are buried with the William Uthe family. John Christopher Uthe is buried in the next plot
which he bought for his children and their spouses. Ihaven't gotten back to graceland to check this all out but do plan to do so.
Please get in touch with me.

Missouri-Washington Uthes

I found some notes that I took a few years ago at my aunt's house that you might find interesting. Christian Uthe had another sister, Karoline Wilhelmine Clementine aka Dena. One of Dena's grandchildren looked up the Uthe family several years ago. Here is what he wrote about Lizzie: "Married to George Gross. Had a son named George. Lived in Spokane, Washington for many years. Came to St. Louis sometime in the 1930s. Was broke and stayed with Linda [one of Dena's daughters] for over a year. Got her into the Little Sisters of Poor home. Died while there. Never possible to locate her son and she had no contact with him. It was believed that he was in California."
Christian's brother, William Uthe, lived in Ferry County WA for many years.
Keep me posted!

Elizabeth Uthe

My great-grandfather, Christian Uthe, had a sister Friedrike Clementine Elizabeth, aka Lizzie, born in 1861. The Uthe family came from Lippe in Germany and settled in central Missouri in 1868. The story that has been passed down in the family is that Lizzie went to Washington, married a man named Gross, and had a son. She came back to Missouri in the 1920s or 1930s; she died in St. Louis (date unknown). The family in St. Louis (her sister Dina's family) tried to locate her son but couldn't. I found a marriage record for a Lizzie Uthe and William Gross in Walla Walla County, Washington; marriage date 7 Feb 1892.
I have a lot of information on the Uthe family--except for Lizzie. She has been a mystery.
I look forward to hearing from you and comparing notes.
