My parents, Eugene Palumbo (1893) & Rosina Vacca (1902), were born in Castelpetroso and I am making a study of the town. Your grandfather, Giovanni Vacca, a shoemaker, entered the US at age 27 on April 23, 1921 with the ship Dante Alegieri. He left his wife Concetta in Castelpetroso and was going to his brother, Addolorato, at 109 Lincoln Ave, Orange, NJ. Giovanni Nicola Vacca was born Feb.28, 1893 in Castelpetroso, the son of Felice Vacca, a shoemaker, (born 1857/58,son of Filippo Vacca & Rosa Venditti) & Palma Rosa Marano (daughter of Francesco). Filippo Vacca was born May 01,1820, son of Domenico Vacca & Donata Palumbo. Donata Palumbo was the daughter of Antonio Palumbo & Giovanna Tamburri, ancestors of mine. So we are distant cousins. Born May 29, 1935, in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) to the late Louise and Mary (Bonamace) Vacca. Retired from Gray Drugs/Rite Aid, where he had been a pharmacist.

Surviving are wife, Carolyn (Mayle); children, Jeffrey Louis (April) Vacca of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Charise Marie Vacca of Westerville, Ohio, Melissa Anna (Ted) Pollom of Plain City, Ohio and Michael Anthony (Kelly) Vacca of Pickerington, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Brittany, Max, Jake, Gabby, Tony, Ava and Bella; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Calling hours will be April 5, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral Home, 1249 Hebron Road in Heath, Ohio (Licking County) where a Vigil service will be held at 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be April 6, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leonard Catholic Church, 57 Dorsey Mill Road in Heath, Ohio. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lockbourne, Ohio.

Contributions may be made to St. Leonard Catholic Church.

Vacca Family, Castel Petrose and New York

I am looking for any information on the Vacca family. My grandfather was (Nichola) Giovanni Vacca who migrated to New York in the mid 1920's from Castel Petrose. He is down as having a brother Addolorato and his mothers name was Rosaria.
His wife was Concetta Mucciarone and at the time they had 2 sons Mario and Addolorato (who later was known as Danny and married a Doris) and a daughter Rosina (who later married a Nichola Acaro) The 3 children migrated after there father in 1938 they all lived in Scotland Rd Orange, New Jersey. At some stage Giovanni's wife came to New York for a short period of time but returned back to Italy and remained there with their youngest son Antonio Vacca, for the rest of her life.
Antonio Vacca my father, migrated to Australia in 1957 followed by his wife Esterina and their 5 children, 2 years later in 1959.
Some of the names maybe incorrectly spelt. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank-you. Carmel

I have been told that my family is from northern Italy. Torino is up there. I also know that my great grandparents (Ethel and James Vacca) came from Illinois (my grandfather was born in Kankakee) where they were in the coal mining business. I'm into geneology too. A while ago, you posted a query on the Vacca surename message board. I came upon this board and your message only recently, and was very excited. The reason being, Agostino and Christina (Iodice) Vacca, were my gggrandparents!

Their eldest child, daughter Concetta (Mary), my ggrandmother, married Giovanni (John) Ganci, a barber from Giuliana, Sicily. They had 5 beautiful children together: Ralph (my grandfather), Augustine, Benjammin, Mary, and Alfred. (I have some pictures.) Mary was the last one living. She died in 1999, and is survived by her son, Joseph.

After having read your message, I inquired of my aunt and some 1st cousins once removed, all now in their 60s and 70s. (Many of our cousins still live in NJ.) They told me that they remember from their childhoods, their Aunt Josie, Aunt Anna, and Aunt Lillian (your grandmother). These were their grandaunts. They also remember their slightly older 1st cousins, once removed: Jimmy, Peter, Augie, and Eleanor Vacca. They were some of Afredo's (Alfred) children with his wife, Nellie. They also had 2 more children, Catherine, and Alfred.

According to the 1930 Federal Census for Jersey City (Hudson County), NJ, Augustine (as he eventually came to be called), and Christina, listed right below some of their many grandchildren and Nellie (seperate households), were both born circa 1859.

I'm still researching and would love to share info. with you. You and I are 2nd cousins, once removed!

I wonder if anyone shows a Rocco Vacca, possibly a sibling to a line you're doing research on? He was my uncle (I just love saying Uncle Rocco Vacca!). I'm guessing he was born between 1915 and 1923. He's not a direct ancestor of mine, but I thought my cousins might get a kick out of it if someone had done a line on the family. Rocco married my Aunt Kitty (Katie Vitale) from Newark, and they settled in Woodbridge.

Hello Anita, do you have any time frame? Are you looking for BALAS in America or Croatia? There are numerous Janos (Hungarian for Ivo) BALAS listed among Ellis Island arrivals. Currently there are several BALAS in Croatian tel book in Vinkovci, some in Vukovar.

You and I share the same name. My grandfather Duro Balas was born in Hungary in 1895 - 1964 and had an older brother named Mijo who was married to Eva from Germany they had 5 children, Andrija, Ivo, Rozika, Julka & Brother ???(my mother wasn't sure of his name), I think they lived in Vuckovar, Croatia.

Unfortunately, my father Karlo (Dragutin) Balas pasted away in 1991, however it would be interesting if our history cross paths.

I am starting to find out that the Surname of "Vacca" in Italy & Spain is like "Smith" or "Jones" in America!!! My Grandmother's family settled in the New Jersey area, mainly Patterson and Newark, NJ. "Cancro" is her married name, she was born in 1905 in Patterson, NJ. Her Father, Angelo "Jim" Vacca Immigrated from Italy around the turn of the Century. I haven't been able to really get more into my father's side of the family, as I just haven't been able to go "home" lately to really spend some quailty time with family in NJ and really start getting the stories to flow! I was reading your story and it sounds like maybe we may be related. My grandfather was Charles Vacca of Lasalle/Peru Illinois and was born Aug 3 1903. His parents were Michael and Rose Vacca. I don't know if Canco is her maiden name. Charles was married to Florence Trempalla.

My Great Grandfather was Vincent Vacca b. 1869, married to Susan Martino Vacca. Immigrated in 1899 from Italy. They had four children, one drowned while swimming in the Mississippi. One of those children John Joseph b.1889 d. 1961 was my grandfather. Vincent died in an accident working at Marshal Filed and Company in 1904. All of the children were put in an orphanage. We can not find any record of Susan Martino Vacca's death. John Joseph married Caroline Hearne Bain b.1896 d.1987 from Kentucky. They had four children. John Joseph Jr. is my father b.1922.

i, too, am researching my family history. My greatgrandfather, Dominicangelo Vacca, was born about 1885-6 in Italy, came to the US (via New York) in about 1902-3. He eventually settled in Rhode Island and married Assunta Christiano. He said he had half brothers (for sure) though i don't know their names. They lived in south america (argentina, I believe) and then in canada. Does any of this sound familiar to you? My great grandfather was a John Vacca. According to family stories, his father died and left him in the care of his stepmother, who took the other child (?) back to Italy and left John here in an orphanage.

John had four children with his wife Caroline. He died in Calumet Park, IL, if I understand correctly. Caroline was born in 1896, so John must have been slightly older.

I doubt my John Vacca is yours, but perhaps, he is related? Couldn't have been that many Vacca's in Illinois around the turn of the century, I'm sure.
