I have just started my search but.... My Great grandfather was Philip T Vail, grandfather was Philip Germond Vail, Sr and father was Philip Germond Vail, Jr. We know "Germond" was a family name and this is the first time I found the two names together (Vail, Germond) We know that PT Vail was born in New York and moved to Calvert Co Md, married Sue E Jones from the area. If you know of any connection, please share.
Thanks so much
Linda Vail McSwain

Vail - Mills
Marion E. Vail b. 9 Nov 1886 McDonough Co., IL; married Blanch(e) Mills 12 Mar 1913 Franklin Co., KS.
Blanche Mills b. 8 Nov 1889 probably in Miami Co. KS. Blanche was a daughter of James Linzy Mills and Mary Ann Gooderick/Goodrich. The Vail family lived in Richmond, Franklin Co., KS 1915, then to Rantoul, KS.
I don't find the death date or cemetery of Marion E. Vail in Franklin Co. Does anyone know of his death? His wife Blanche died Apr 1968 Rantoul, KS.
The children of Marion and Blanche Vail:
1- Erma Evelyn Vail b. 1914 KS
2- Ila Mae Vail b. abt 1916 KS and she graduated from Rantoul High School 1933.
3- Harold D. Vail b. abt 1919 KS.
4- Doris E. Vail b. abt 1921 KS.
5- Emma Jane Vail b. 1930, probably in Rantoul, Franklin Co., KS.

My interest is that Blanche Mills father (James Linzy Mills) was a brother of my g gm Amanda Mills White. Amanda Mills married Nathan White and lived in Lane, Franklin Co., KS.

Thanks for your time......... Marysue

The year of the death of Sarah Vail, daughter of John Vail (QP) and Martha Fitz Randolph, was apparently misreported in the William Penn Vail book. I knew something was wrong because the dates of children's births didn't fit. I have a photo of her gravestone. It is in the Readington Reform Church's graveyard. It shows "Sarah, wife of Isaac Jinning," and that she died at age 80, which fits.

You raised a good question. I have seen Isaac and Sarah listed but never thought about it.

Isaac V was married 3 times, last to Winifred Crab. Eliz Jennings was probably his 1st wife because of the children listed for them vs the children listed for wife #2. I have seen references for Rachel Compton and Isaac V in NJ and listed in associated with the Quaker Church.

As you know from the Vail book, some fallout occurred because Isaac married a Presbyterian and therefore outside the Quaker faith. Was his decision to leave NJ for VA based on that falling out or because he gave false testimony (swearing - under oath?). The book further states he lost his wife and daughter before leaving for VA.

If Isaac Jennings were Elizabeth J's brother, and Sarah was Isaac V's sister, then either they were all Quakers, or, the controversy about differences in religion was not as big problem as indicated in the book. Rachel Compton, if we are dealing with our Isaac, was probably a Quaker because there is an entry in the Quaker minutes I have on file.

So, who was the Presbyterian lady? Winifred? Maybe.

I am going to trace by census the children of Isaac and Eliz Jennings to see when their birthdays occurred. If he married Rachel Compton in 1762, then he and Eliz must have married at least by 1750.

Agnes Vail was born about 1757, Susannah, I guess before 1760, Samuel about 1757. Agnes was Eliz daughter based on a bio about her husband Wm Morgan. Same with Samuel. Still trying to confirm Susannah who I am a descendent of.

Let me know any thoughts you may have on this.

Tom Chrisman

Mark,

Briefly, I am Great Granddaughter to Phebe Vail B.1802 NY. She was the daughter of Issac S. Vail and Fanny Green. She was the seventh generation from Thomas Vale B. about 1560 England. His son was John Vail B.1850 and on 23 April 1612 John married Elizabeth Dawsome in St. Katharine's Cree, London England. They were the parents of Thomas Vail who came to America.

I read your Post dated 07 June 2003. My question is, you say there is no proof that Thomas or Jeremiah are linked to anyone from England. Do you know something I don't? Please fill me in.
Here is the latest I have on my William Vail. He was originally in Sec 12, Range 9 Plot A 15 of Calvary Cemetery, Queens NY. He was moved within the cemetery April 6, 1882. He was moved again on November 15, 1902 to White Plains, NY. I have called White Plains Rural Cemetery, Mt Calvary Cemetery, and Kensico Cemetery, and he is not in any of these. Not sure of church cemeteries in the area or smaller family cemeteries. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks.

No, I'm afraid not, at least not in the direct male line.

Most individual results in the *same* haplogroup don't match each other in any genealogically meaningful sense (that is to say, showing probable relatedness within the last six to eight hundred years, from the time of the introduction of surnames and availability of relevant records). Results in *different* haplogroups never match each other.

This is very interesting to say the least. As a descendant of Thomas Vail, my Haplogroup is R1b, which means that Jeremiah and Thomas are not related, or so it would seem. Is it possible to have 2 different Haplogroupings and still be blood related?

Vail-Fales DNA match

There have been a couple of Y-DNA matches between descendants of Jeremiah Vail (b. ca. 1618, England?, d. 1687, Southold, Long Island) and James Fales (b. ca. 1630, England?, d. 1708, Dedham, MA). Y-DNA is passed on exclusively in the male line and is thus useful for tracing male-line descent. The haplogroup is I2a (formerly known as I1b).

Two descendants of Jeremiah Vail have matched each other, one descended through Jeremiah's son Jeremiah (results and pedigree available online at smgf.org; registration required) and the other through Jeremiah's son John (private communication to me).

These Jeremiah Vail results match those of two descendants of James Fales (results and pedigrees also at smgf.org) and two other Fales whose deeper ancestry is unknown; one is from Wilmington, North Carolina (both at ysearch.org). One of the James Fales descendants is through James' son James and the other through James' son Peter.

The fact that the matches are through separate sons of the immigrant ancestors is a good sign that the results are a valid reflection of the Y-DNA signature of the immigrants.

The strong possibility of a close relationship between the two families should be kept in mind by future researchers.

Richard M.
I saw your family on the 1881 Canadian census in Yarmouth , Elgin East, Ontario. It indicates that James Edward, Jane and all the children listed were born in Ontario. I noted a few Vails on Robert S. Vail's family treemaker site that had sons who went to Ontario. You can find Robert's tree by Googling his name. At the bottom of the first page click on "Descendents of Thomas Vail". Take a look at #45 Nathaniel Vail, Sr. I believe he went to Canada and his son #129 Lewis Vail is noted as "went to Upper Canada (Ontario). Secondly #53 Sampson Vail had a son #172 Issac b. June 24, 1756, d. before Sept 9, 1839 in Woodhouse, Ontario, Canada. You may find others.

In the "Moses Vail of Huntington, Long Island" genealogy available on Heritage Quest you can read about Stephen Monfort Vail on pages 332-336. Stephen's line is Stephen (7), James (6), Moses (5), Isaac (4), Moses (3), Joseph (2), Thomas (1). Perhaps you can find you Mary Kline Vail by tracing Stephen's descendents. He appears to have had 3 sons: Isaac Cushman, Samuel James, and Milton. Isaac had a son named Warren, and Milton had a son named Elbert. Milton's third child is unnamed. Samuel had no sons listed.
Good luck.
William Vail

My William Vail died in NY in Dec, 1881. I have contacted Calvery cemetery and found he was moved to White Plains. I now have no idea where he is. He has no middle initial. He was born in NY approx 1818 as he was 63 at the time of death. His second marriage was to Bridget Finan. Children of his prevoius marriage to ? were Frank and George plus some others possibly a William. With second wife children were Elizabeth, Ellen, Catherine, Cornelius, Charles, Martin. Have no idea who his parents were. If any of this ties in with info you have, please let me know. I have spent years and this is all I could get.

Ada DANIELS poss. related to VAIL family

This is totally a long shot in the dark. I have a very old photo of a person named Ada DANIELS. At the bottom of the photo is inscribed Aunt Ada Daniels and on the back it says Aunt Ada Daniels, then in pencil is inscribed Mother. I do not have the slightest idea who she is but she is among a lot of old family photos, so I assume she is related to my family somehow. Looking at the photo, she remarkably resembles my great great grandmother, Eleanor P. nee Vail Havens Gregg Hunt. Eleanor was b. in OHIO in 1833 and lived in Iowa, Kansas, S. Dakota & Missouri over the years. If this Ada is the sister to Eleanor, this is a breakthrough in my research of the VAIL family. I have tried searching the Iowa and surrounding states for Ada DANIELS and there is a possibility of one or two in Iowa in 1870 & 1880. One Ada was married to a Jefferson DANIELS and had children Charlie, Kenneth, Wjoe(sic)dau., and Jerry E. This Ada was born in Ohio, as was Eleanor. If anyone has any idea of how I can relate this Ada to my family I would be forever grateful. My surname list includes: FREED THOMASON VAIL HAVENS BINGHAM among many others.

Yes of course there are Vail's around Decatur. I have the Vails back to 1640. Who are you looking for and who are you. There are several Vail's in Arthur.Il mainly my husband's
nephews children. The VAil's are in Effingham,Altamont, and
I live in Mattoon. I was married to Walter Vail and I have
four children, 11 grandchildren and 28 or so great grands'. So give me some names. I have information about the Vail's way back to Thomas Vail 1640 and his descendants.

Sir, I would have no idea, but probably somehow you are. The name Vail took on many different spellings. But, I think you could look this up with more knowledge of your great-grandfather. Where did he come from England? I had a missing link in my Vail genealogy. My husband's grandfather had joined the army but got sick with the measles and was sent home never to be able to work like other young men. Later in years he tried to get a pension and he had to prove that he was not impaired before he got the measles in the service. I was advised to write to Washington, DC and ask for his army papers. It cost $25 but was worth every dime. In this way I found out his Uncle was ask if he was related in the Army query and he said "yes, he is my brother's son". That was a great piece of information as I had no proof who his father was. If you write, be sure to tell them as much as you know. Lots of information will help you. When, Where and family members and where he lived, town, state, father and mother. On and on it goes. I
hope you can find out what you want to know. As related to
the Vail family, somehow, somewhere as they came to the US
in 1640 and were Quakers.

of course Samuel Vail is a very common name as their were several. I will look for your ancestor but the name rings no bells. I have mountains of information about the Vails
clear back to 1640 when Thomas Vail came to the US.

Perhaps you can tell me how to resolve a problem with my
Kiplinger ancestry. I have Jacob Erasmus Kiplinger married
to two women at the same time and my son and daughter and I
have no answer to the problem. Would Ancestry.com answer such a question? I do not know how to approach them.

I came accross the message you posted about Henry and Pamela Vail. Most of the names are very familar to me, since I was raised in the Macomb, Industry, and Rushville Illinois area. I still have relative's living in that local. I might be interested in this Bible since one of my G/G Grandfathers was a Vail and one of his daughters married a G/grandfather in Industry. My address is James R. Kelly, 217 C St., Cody, Wy 82414. Let me know what you want for the Bible. My e-mail is jnkelly@bresnan.net.
Thank you. James R.
DNA Posting

I am the GG Grandson of James Carr Veale, who was a Revolutionary War soldier in South Carolina. I have posted my 37-marker DNA results on ancestry.com. Comparison of this DNA with DNA from others will give the approximate number of generatons since we had a common male ancestor. It will be of particular interest to compare the results with a male of an alternate spelling of Veale, i.e., Veal, Vail, Veall, Veil, Vael, etc.
