I am looking for the parents of a John Valentine, born in Eccles, on April 25, 1643. There is indication that his parents were a Richard Valentine and Ann Sedon who were married in 1620, although they would have been in their 40's at that time. I would also like to find out who the parents of this Richard were. Were they John Valentine and Elizabeth Risley? John Valentine, who died on March 30, 1625, was an owner of Bencliffe Hall in Eccles. Are these people on your family tree? Regards, Dick

The will dated March 28, 1550, belonged to a Thomas Valentine who was interred at the Eccles church. It states therein "I gyffe to my sunne Richard Valentyne all my lands &c......(Bencliffe Hall).

The John Valentine married to Margerie Sleighe was born in 1609 or 1610 and died on March 14, 1680 or1681. I sure would like to know who this John's siblings and children were.

Thanks for your info so far. Reagerds, Dick

Hi, I see that you possess a book on Valetines. Does it have any information on the family of Johann George Valentine who lived in Frederick County, MD He died 1783. was married Anna Margaretha MAtthews (or MAtthias). I was told their daughter Catherine married a Wagner. Is anything in the book about them? I would really appreciate any help. Thank you.

There is a chapter in the "Valentines in America" that talks of a George Valentine who came from Germany in the early 1700's. He settled about 1740 in Frederick County, Maryland on the Monocacy river. His sons were Jacob, John, Henry and George. Jacob and John stayed at home, Henry went to Ohio and George never married. His three daughters were married to a Mr. Wagner, a Mr. Matthies and a Mr. Ogle. Two of these lived in Maryland and the other in McConnels Cove, Pa. There is more info, especially on the children of Jacob.

I suggest you get a copy of the book from the Higginson Book Company in Salem, Massachusetts. I believe you can find them on the internet. Good luck, Richard

Saw your e-mail and posts on Ancestry.com
My Valentines come from Long Island - Queens/Hempstead area.
I can go back as far as Robert D. Valentine (b. 1800) married to Eliza and they had about 10 children.
I suspect that Robert's father might be Richard Valentine (just a hunch from the cencus data in 1830 since it shows a Robert (young adult) and Richard (older adult) living as neighbors in 1830.

Do you have any info. on either of these men?

Have you any record of Richard Valentine from Eccles who married Mary and had children Edward b.1770, Thomas b.1771, Robert b.1776, John b.1778 (my ancestor), Peter b.1780? The baptisms were at St. Mary's church, Eccles. According to a local history book about Worsley (Eccles and Worsley are next to each other), Richard Valentine was a tennant of the Duke of Bridgewater.

Have you connected any Higgin family members specifically David and Elizabeth who had a daughter Frances b. 1777 who married my John in St. Mary's Eccles on 29.5.1798?

I am related to the Valentine's from Eccles. While your ancestor Richard went to Long Island, mine (John) went to Boston.

I am a descendant of the Valentine's who owned Bencliffe Hall in Eccles Parish for over 300 years. I am fairly sure of this since the last owners of Bentcliffe were the grandchildren of a John Valentine who arrived in Boston in the year 1675. I can trace my ancestry directly to this John Valentine who was "His Majesty's Advocate General for the Provinces of Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire and the Colony of Rhode Island". John's parentage and the original Valentine ownership of Bencliffe, however, are unclear to me.

Information in my possession concerning Bentcliffe Hall in Lancashire, identifies the earliest known owner as a Richard Valentine married to Anne Hopwood. This information, based on T.W. Valentine’s book “The Valentine’s in America 1644-1874”, asserts that Richard came into possession of Bentcliffe in the late 1400’s and that Bencliffe was originally the property of a Thomas Holt. According to my notes, Richard had a son Thomas who inherited the Hall and who, in turn, left it to his son Richard in a will dated March 28, 1550.

Information obtained from a fellow researcher in the “United Kingdom Genealogy Forum”, however, provides a different parentage for the Thomas whose will was dated 1550. This new information from the “Victoria County History of Lancashire, Salford Hundred” is similar to that obtained by a cousin during her trip to Eccles in June 1966. According to this information, The Valentines of Bencliffe (also Bentcliffe, Beancliffe or Beaucliffe) were descended from the Valentines of Shaw Hall (built in 1305) in Flixton, Lancashire.

I do not have the linkage between Richard of Shaw Hall and Thomas of Bentcliffe Hall. Thomas Valentine, living at Bentcliffe in the late 15th century (1470’s & 80’s) had sons John, George and Geoffrey. John married a Joan Langtree and they had sons John and Thomas. In 1516, after the death of the father John, circa 1508, his widow Joan and his son Thomas obtained a deed of lands in Eccles, Barton, Little Houghton, Worsley and Bedford. In 1536 Thomas granted his sons John and Richard his lands for life in Eccles, Barton and Worsley. Thomas’s remaining lands went to his legitimate daughter and through her to the Asshaw family who inherited Shaw Hall in Flixton.

Thomas’s will dated March 28, 1550 reads as follows:
“In the name &c. 28 March 1550. 4 Edw. 6. I Thomas Volantyne of Bencliffe, gent. &c. and my bodye to be buryed in Eccles Church. I gyffe to my sunne Richard Valentyne all my landys &c. accordyne to the tenor of certen dedys indentyd made 7 Oct. 3 Edw. VI…….”

I am advised that Bencliffe was southeast of Eccles on the boarders of Pendleton and covered all the area between present day Hope Hospital and the Manchester Ship Canal. The Victoria County History also describes the legend of Sir Ralph Valentine of Shaw who was killed at the battle of Bosworth in 1485 and Prince Rupert and his army’s uninvited stay in 1644 at Bencliffe on the way to Marston Moor in the Civil war.

Bentcliffe ownership

The earliest known mention of Bentcliffe was in the year 1250, when the estate, comprising some 50 odd acres, was granted to his brother John by William the Clerk of Eccles. The estate was acquired sometime in the mid 15th century by the Valentine’s of Flixton (Richard le Valentine believed to have established Shaw Hall of Flixton circa 1305). A will dated 1520 of a Richard Valentine married to Anne Hopwood (obviously not the Richard le Valentine of Shaw Hall*) leaves Bentcliffe to Thomas Valentine ** who was residing there sometime during the War of the Roses (1455 to 1487).

Another source has a Thomas Valentine devising Bentcliffe to his eldest son John sometime before 1508. This John died in or before 1508 and left his lands to his widow Joan and son Thomas (Joan later married a Langtree). This Thomas left Bentcliffe to son Richard in his March 28, 1550 will.

Richard died in 1556 and left Bentcliffe to his 3 year old son Thomas.

Thomas, married to Dorothy Malbon or Walton, died in April 1614 and left Bencliffe to his son John who died in 1625. This was the John married to Elizabeth Risley. Their son John was either 14 or 22 when he inherited Bencliffe.

This younger John was High Constable of the Salford Hundred sometime between 1625 and 1649. Prince Rupert commandeered Bentcliffe in 1644 during the civil war between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. After Prince Rupert left, the estate was sequestered and John was fined 30 pounds initially and then had to redeem Bentcliffe in 1651 for 255 pounds. This John died in 1680 and left Bentcliffe to his son Thomas who died a week later.

Thomas’s son Richard inherited Bentcliffe at the age of 6 years. Richard was appointed Sheriff of Lancashire in 1713. He died unmarried in 1716 and left Bentcliffe to his cousin Thomas Valentine, a clerk in the holy orders of Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.

Thomas devised the estate in 1766 to Samuel Valentine, the oldest son of John Valentine who had immigrated to Boston in 1675

Samuel’s sons sold the estate in 1792 to a Mr. A. Partington

* need line of descent from Richard le Valentine to the Richard married to Anne Hopwood, if one exists.

** may or may not be the Thomas Valentine whose will dated March 28, 1550, leaves Bentcliffe to son Richard.

*** need parentage of John who was born in Eccles, perhaps at Bentcliffe

Can you help me answer these questions? I understand there is a wealth of material on the Valentine family at the general or central library in Manchester. I have also been told to direct my inquiries to the Salford Local History Library by Richard Bond, Manchester Archives and Local Studies, Central Library St Peter's Square, Manchester M2 5PD, tel: 0161 234 1980
