From - The St. Joseph Island United Church History - 1974
In 1878 or about that time Mr. E. O. Van Horn, a local preacher of the Methodist persuasion, established about seven classes in different parts of the Island with leaders for each. These classes met in the homes of the settlers.
Recrods from those days list the following as places where these classes had been formed - Bethel, Marksville, Riverside, Cedar Grove, Lyon's School, Tenby Bay and Cheer's School. Some years later in 1889 a class with Byron Collins as leader, was started at Richards Landing. It was the early work of Mr. Van Horn which laid the foundation of Methodism on the Island.
From 1878 until 1880 Methodist classes were held in homes and in an old log school house and then in an empty building down near the dock. This was one of the classes formed by E. O. Van Horn. In 1893, the Methodist Church was built up on the hill, at the corner of the Hilton Road and the Base Line. It was used until 1917 when union with the Presbyterians took place, then the building was sold.
Names connected with the early Methodist Church are: Steinburgs, Stubbs, Gingles, Grays, Crowders, Bishops, Spencers, Reids, Dunn, Stuebings and Mitchell.

In 1881 the church was constructed ans servicrd were held. Their church was of first importance to the settlers even when shelter and food was a matter of survival.
In May 1886 , ten years after the death of Margaret, EO emigrated to the US and landed at the Port of Duluth. On June 3 1886 EO became a citizen of the USA, Territory of Dakota, County of Codington, Watertown.

My grandfather was benjamin van horn, son of edward oscar, son of cornelius. I can't speak for any other lines of the family but you have relatives in michigan and iowa. My sister is well-researched in this area although I don't know if she can go back farther than cornelius. I can put you in touch with her if you'd like. Also, I remember an event when I was young when canadian relatives came looking for my grandfather ben's sister. Apparently she had disappeared from her home and they believed that maybe she was with one of her siblings although that was never the case to the knowledge of my father's family

Death Notice of Edward Oscar Vanhorn (from paper 1901)
Mr. E. O. Vanhorn
The subject of this sketch was born in Prince Edward County on Mar 13th, 1829. While still young he moved to Ontario, settling in Carrick township where he was one of the first settlers. In 1854 he married Miss Margaret McKenzie. In 1879 he moved to this Island, where he acted as a local minister under the Methodist church. He was the first missionary on the Island and endured many hardships in doing his duty. To attend the meetings of the missionary board he has walked to Sault Ste. Marie. He located a farm on the Mountain and after farming for 8 years left for Dakota, where he remained four years, then removing to Grand View, Iowa, where he lived till last fall, when he returned to the Island. He died on March 19th, aged 72 years and 6 days.
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Mr. McLeod. Owing to the extrememly bad weather many were kept at home who would gladly have attended the service of their friend. He leaves 9 children to mourn his death.
