Daily Register Gazette, Rockford, IL, 9 March 1899

Durand, March 6.- John Van Sickle, an old settler of Durand, passed away early Tuesday morning. Mr. Van Sickle has been lingering between life and death for several weeks, having suffered a paralytic stroke a few weeks ago and has been failing ever since until last Tuesday morning death relieved him of his sufferings. Mr. Van Sickle was born in Wantage, Sussex county, New Jersey, March 15, 1815, and died at the home of his daughter, Miss Harriet Van Sickle. He was married to Miss Phebe Courtright at Wantage, N.J., who died at this place May 6, 1867. Seven children were born, one of whom died in infancy. Those left to mourn the loss are Mrs. H. J. Rolason, Mrs. D. B. Lain, Miss Harriet Van Sickle, Mrs. R. Webster, Mrs. W. A. Patterson and John C. Van Sickle. He died lacking but 15 days of reaching his 84th birthday. He was a respected citizen and an active Christian. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, Rev. C. A. Gage officiating.

* Please note that the 1880 book written on the Van Sickle family (page 107) lists that John had already died. Although a good resource, the book does have errors.
