I know your message is from about 10 years ago, but wondered if you ever got your answer? I am doing research on this branch of the VanSickle family (trying to tie my own family in, as I'm 90% sure of relation). I have been in contact with the Northville Historic Society, and they provided me with information on the Henry Van Sickle I believe you are looking for, along with information on his parents. The information does show a marriage to Letitia Phillips, but also shows a birthdate for Henry of abt 1817. It notes that he was born in Seneca County, New York (probably near Ovid, NY), and that he married Letitia in Oakland County in 1853, and that he passed away in Milford in 1898. Please contact me if you would like more information, or if you have (in the preceding year) come across any information on this family. I am trying to connect my paternal great-great-grandfather Andrew Van Sickle in to this family (he would possibly have been a brother of the Henry you referenced).

The only documentation I have personally seen on Isaac Van Sickle is a transcribed copy of the Orders In Council from 14 December 1816, which says,

"Humbly sheweth that your Excellency's petitioner resided in Morris County in the State of Jersey in America before the breaking out of the Rebellion, that he joined the Royal Standard in the year 1775 and served his Majesty as a private in the Jersey Volunteers commanded by General Skinner until the end of the same - that he came to this Province in the year 1797 where he has since resided. Wherefore your Excellency's petitioner most humbly prays that your excellency may be pleased to order his name to be inserted on the UE list.

Isaac X Vansickle
Ancaster 5th July 1811

A copy of this document (or a transcribed copy) can be obtained through the Ontario Archives and the Untied Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada.

And though I do not know exactly what they house, I do know that the Ontario Genealogical Society, Hamilton Branch, has several records on Isaac Van Sickle.

Happy hunting!

Jeannie

I am a direct descendent of Isaac Van Sickle (Vansickle), 1752-1830. I seek early documentation of family and individual connections. The earliest I have is the 1861 Canadian census, the record for his son, Abram [Abraham] Isaac van Sickle.

My family line is: Isaac van Sickle - Abram [Abraham] Isaac van Sickle - Nathaniel Reid [Reed] van Sickle - Benjamin Franklin van Sickle - Rhoda G VanSickle m. George Gordon Callon - Ross William Callon Sr - Gordon James Callon (me). Apparently this makes Isaac van Sickle my 4th great grandfather.

Most members of that line of the family are buried in the White Brick Cemetery, Ancaster. A few more recent members are buried in the Bethesda United Church Cemetery, Ancaster.

Thanks.

GJC

Well, thank you very much!

It makes me crazy that until 1850, no one was required to write down the names of all people in a household, in a census. I have another grandmother, on my father's side, with the same situation...died just prior to the 1850 census and with a common name, so that it is difficult to track her down.

Also, now that I have more time on my hands, without kids at home, I no longer live in New Jersey. When I did live there, I just didn't have time to look things up. Such is life, right? ;)

I have been researching the Van Sickle family for so long now, yet I am never surprised when I find another member. Since the Angleman family had lived for some time in Middlesex County, Catherine may be connected to other Van Sickles in the area. I'll see if I can dig up anything.

I'm glad you enjoyed my blog. Thank you! :)
According to my grandfather's notes, she was Katherine Ann Birge. I could not find anyone with that name anywhere. A few years ago, a distant cousin (who has a copy of John Angleman's will) told me that John Angleman's 1st wife was, in fact, Catherine van Syckle.

My gg grandfather, Abraham, has both van Sickle & Suydam as his middle names. It makes so much more sense, to me, that his mother was van Syckle.

I've been researching my Angleman family on and off for at least 10 years. I thought it was going to be so much easier to find them, as my grandfather had a lot of handwritten notes/research. But, it has not been very easy at all. It has been fun, though.

I just recently came across your blog & enjoyed it very much!

Hello Gene! You're definitely not bugging me. I'm very happy to do all that I can to help contribute to your noble cause. Unfortunately, I have very little else to offer though. My records just aren't as recent as you need.

I did find the obituary of Jeremiah's father, which lists that he had four sons. I am unable to find anything on the unknown son. The other two sons, Russell Day Van Sickle (1890-1967) and George Stanley Van Sickle (c.1902-after 1929) appear not have had any descendants.

Although I am uncertain where the younger generation of this family is buried, the older Van Sickles are buried in Elmwood Cemetery in the town of New Brunswick. Sometimes cemeteries have obituaries on file. I think it's worth a shot. Their phone number is (732) 545-1445.

There is also a volunteer at Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness for Middlesex county. You can find her email through the link below:

http://www.raogk.org/newjersey2.htm

I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for anything that will help. Keep in touch, Gene.

Jeannie
Jeannie,

Hello again. Hate to bug you again but if you are going to be a "genealogical genie" then you have to put up with riff-raff like me !!

I'm wondering if you have any more information on George W's dad....Jeremiah Wilber. From my basic research I think he had two brothers, Russel D. and George S.

I'm thinking that if George W. was an only child, then his dad's two brothers might have obtained some of the family history. I thought maybe I'd try to track down their families and see what I could come up with.

Thanks again,

Gene
"The Rookie"
In 1920 and in previous census records, (also in New Brunswick), he is listed as J. Wilbur. The WWI Draft Index lists him as J. Wilbur too, but the WWII Index lists his full name- Jeremiah Wilbur.

I'm not certain if George had any siblings. I tend to think he was an only child. Jeremiah died in 1966, Anna in 1974. I'll see if I can find any obits. It might take a couple of days.

Jeannie

Hi Jeannie,

Thank you for the information. I was able to find the census report from 1930 that showed George on it. However, the one I found showed his mother as Anna and his father as John, not Jeremiah. Can you help with figuring out which is correct ??

I was wondering if you knew if there is any information on George's family after 1930 ? I'm wondering if there were other children born after the 1930 census was taken, or if George was an only child.

I thank you again for the assistance. You really ARE a Genealogy Genie !!! Maybe someday I'll get there....

Gene

Hello Gene,

George was the son of Jeremiah Wilbur Van Sickle and grandson of George H. Van Sickle and Katherine Day. The Van Sickle line is as follows:

George (1921-1944)
Jeremiah (1894-1937?)
George H. (1866-1910)
William A. (1824-1895)
Cornelius (1796-1855)
William (1755-1846)
Reynier (1716-c.1750)
Johannes (born c.1669)
Ferdinandus (born c.1635)

George and family can be found in the 1920 & 1930 census in New Brunswick, Middlesex Co. New Jersey. George's great-great grandfather, Cornelius, can be found in John W. Van Sickle's book from 1880 (on page 183):

http://books.google.com/books?id=SJlYAAAAMAAJ&dq=%22hist...

I'm attaching an article from the Trenton Evening Times on 1 March 1944. I hope that you will find it useful.

Jeannie
Thank you. I was the one that added Morella to Find A Grave. I had passed along the obituary to the now caretaker of the tribute.

Morella was the daughter of Jacob BARNHART and Mary SKIVER. Her husband, James Van Sickle (1844-1930) was the son of Andrew. Not much is known about Andrew. He may be the Andrew SICKLES listed in Athens Co. OH in 1850. James's mother is unknown. His stepmother was Susan SKIVER. She and Andrew VS were married in Hocking Co. OH in 1852.

There's a topic here at Ancestry about these individuals:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.vansickle/11/mb.ashx

Thanks for the post!
Hello,

I'm looking to find any and all information available on George W. Van Sickle, born around 1921 in New Jersey.

I'm compiling a history of the men who were killed with my great-uncle when their B-17 bomber was shot down on 30 January 1944. George was the tail gunner on the B-17.

His next-of-kin was given as his mother, Anna Van Sickle, Rural Free Delivery Number One, Monmouth Junction, New Jersey.

So far I can find that he was born around 1921 and enlisted out of New Jersey on 31 July 1942. I have been able to find a George Van Sickle from New Jersey that was born in 1927 (census records) but if this was the George I am looking for that would make him only 15 when he enlisted.....but I've been told that people could get away with that fairly often during WWII.

I'm very new to this family research so any assistance would be greatly appreciated !!

Thanks,

Gene

I am desperately looking for information related to Sarah Vansickle. She married David Compton in New Jersey. Originally I discovered her father was Johannes and her mother Jannetje from Long Island New York. Johannes was the youngest son of Ferdinand. I understand there is was a Dutch Church of Somerville that had some records.

Sarah was born shortly after her parents movement to NJ and there does not seem to be any record of her birth associated with Johannes. Perhaps I have the wrong line. Can anyone give me a heads up on where Sarah descended from?

Thanks.

She was born in Robesonia, Pa, 1910 residence in Wyomissing, Pa; 1920 residence in Fairview Twsp, York Co (New Cumberland area). Census of 1930 has her in what became the Harrisburg State Hospital. My grandfather was Pliny Van Syckle Bartlett and info that I have say his mother was Emma Delora Van Syckle Bartlett and her husband was Pliny Bartlett. I have no info on a Henry Bartlett, however I know my grandfathers, father owned the first steam laundry in San Francisco, Oakland area. reybart@msn.com

Re: Will: Guisbert Van Sickle

I have little doubt that Guisbert is closely related to the "Three Brothers, Stephen, William, Geysbert Van Sickle" mentioned in John Waddell VS's book from 1880 [page 183]:

"Geysbert Van Sickle, brother of Stephen and William, had seven children; I. James; II. Jonathan; III. Chisters; IV. Geysbert, whose children live in Woodbridge and Metuchen, N.J.; V. Mary Ann; VI. Phoebe; and VII. Lydia Ann, who married Otis D. Stewart, of New Brunswick, N.J."

The book indicates that this Geysbert, brother of Stephen and William, is the son of Reinier VS and Stijntje (online sources cite that she was born Stijntje SUYDAM). Reinier's will seems to confirm this:

"1749, August 31. Van Sickelen, Reinier, of Reading Township, Hunterdon Co.; will of. Wife, Styntie. Daughter, Jannetie. Residue to wife and sons Ferdenant and Ryke, Geisbert and Hendricks, and daughters Jannetie and Marya. Exercutors- brothers-in-law, John Sudam, and brothers Geisbert and Johannis van Sickel. Witnesses- John Van Sickle, Peter Van Sickle, John Van Boskerck. Proved March 6, 1749-1750."- Calendar of New Jersey Wills, Vol. 30, Page 502.

Note that the will mentions that Reinier had a brother names Geisbert. It is merely a guess, but I believe your Guisbert is either Reinier's brother, or a descendant of Reinier's brother.

I must admit that this line is very confusing, and I have been researching them for quite some time. I believe my family line ties into this branch in some way (my ancestor may be the William mentioned in the will that you provided).

I hope this has been helpful. Thank you so much for posting the will!

Jeannie

P.S. I do have info. on the Woodbridge Van Sickles mentioned in John Waddell VS's book, as well as some other tidbits on the Guisbert/Gysbert name that I've gathered over the years. Please contact me directly if you're interested.

[Son of John VAN SICKLE and JANET THOMPSON]*

Daily Register Gazette, Rockford, IL, 9 March 1899

Durand, March 6.- John Van Sickle, an old settler of Durand, passed away early Tuesday morning. Mr. Van Sickle has been lingering between life and death for several weeks, having suffered a paralytic stroke a few weeks ago and has been failing ever since until last Tuesday morning death relieved him of his sufferings. Mr. Van Sickle was born in Wantage, Sussex county, New Jersey, March 15, 1815, and died at the home of his daughter, Miss Harriet Van Sickle. He was married to Miss Phebe Courtright at Wantage, N.J., who died at this place May 6, 1867. Seven children were born, one of whom died in infancy. Those left to mourn the loss are Mrs. H. J. Rolason, Mrs. D. B. Lain, Miss Harriet Van Sickle, Mrs. R. Webster, Mrs. W. A. Patterson and John C. Van Sickle. He died lacking but 15 days of reaching his 84th birthday. He was a respected citizen and an active Christian. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, Rev. C. A. Gage officiating.

* Please note that the 1880 book written on the Van Sickle family (page 107) lists that John had already died. Although a good resource, the book does have errors.
