I just noticed, Rob, that I didn't send the family of John Van Buskirk as it appeared in the 1930 census (he used the name Franklin in that census). The family is still in Malden and Helen is still his wife. Franklin is listed as the proprietor of a bicycle shop. Children are;
Pearl age 17 (she was Helen P) in the 1920 census
Franklin Jr age 15
Leslie age 11 (he was Albert L) in the 1920 census
Mabel age 8
Howard age 7
Raymond age 3 and 11 mo.

As a follow up regarding this family line, I've found conflicting information regarding Lawrence Van Buskirk (born about 1724, the son of John and Geesje Van Buskirk)from several sources. The following is an attempt to sort out the family.

Lawrence was a son of John and Geeseje (Westervelt) Van Buskirk according to the Westervelt genealogy by Walter Westervelt. He died at Aylesford, Nova Scotia in April 1812 at the age of 88 according to an article appearing in the newspaper, Acadian Recorder. The following marriages were attributed to Lawrence;

Elizabeth Demerest married Lourens Van Buskirk 25 August 1742 at New York according to the Demarest genealogy by Voorhis Demerest. Information that identifies this Lawrence as the probable groom is added. One child, Maria, is born of this marriage. She was baptized in June 1748. Elizabeth was not alive when her father made his will in 1766 but her date of death was not found.

A Halenbeck family article by Robert Anderson that appeared in Vol 65 the National Genealogical Society Quarterly includes the marriage of Dorothy Halenbeck (daughter of Garret) to "Laurens Jansen Van Boskerk", both of Hackensack, on 16 Nov 1743.

Lawrence's will dated 7 April 1803 mentions wife Catherine. According to an article in the Acadian Recorder she died 11 March 1818 at Aylesford, age 92.

In an abstract of Lawrence's will that was probated 21 April 1812, the following children were named;
eldest son John Van Buskirk
son Henry Van Buskirk
daughter Tammeseyn, wife of George Riason of N.J.
daughter Jeesye, wife of Douglas Civirns of N.J.
son Abraham of N.Y.
son Garret Van Buskirk
daughter Theodocia, wife of James Harris

Lawrence was born at Hackensack, N.J. according to the Chute genealogy by William Chute. Lawrence's claim to the British government for loss of property he owned in New Jersey and had to abandon during the Revolutionary War due his embracing of the British cause, was dated 12 March 1787 at Saint John, N.B. In it he stated that he was a resident of Bergen County but when the war broke out he was settled at Morris County, N.J. He arrived in Canada in 1783 and spent the winter at Maugerville (New Brunswick). When bringing documentation, which would prove his claim, to Saint John, he was shipwrecked on the Bay of fundy and the documentation was lost (Lawrence was residing in Nova Scotia at the time). He stated that he had joined the British Army in 1776 and had acted as a guide. His son, John, also submitted a claim for losses he sustained.
The Chute genealogy confused Lawrence with the Captain Lawrence Van Buskirk of the King's Orange Rangers who was actually a son of James Van Buskirk. Also the Chute genealogy's un-named daughter of Lawrence would be Tammeseyn, Raison and Ryerson being attempts to spell the same name.

According to information from Early Loyalist Saint John by D.G. Bell, Lawrence and family were transported by the British from New York to the area that is currently Saint John, New Brunswick in 1783 in what was known as the Spring Fleet. What ship the family arrived on was not recorded but his sons Abraham, Garret, Hendrick, and John were listed separately as New York refugees being carried by the Spring Fleet. They all may have been aboard the same vessel. Lawrence was living at Maugerville in 1784 according to the testimony he provided in his claim for losses.
A letter of August 1785 from the Surveyor-General (Mr Morris?) to Joseph Ruggles, one of his deputies, is as follows;
"I have the Governor's Warrent to lay out unto Laurens Van Buskirk, Garret Van Buskirk, Abraham Van Buskirk, Henry Van Buskirk, John Van Buskirk and Garret Ackerson, each a plantation containing 200 acres--1200 acres in the whole--which you will lay out for them on Wilmott mountains adjoining the lands granted to the sons of General Ruggles provided the land is not laid out to others---."

Questions;
Is there proof available to include Thomas And Dorothy as children of Lawrence?
Was it this Lawrence Van Buskirk that married Elizabeth Demerest? If so, did she die soon after the marriage? I wonder why she wasn't baptized until 1748 or why she wasn't mentioned in Lawrence's will.
When did Lawrence's wife Dorothy Halenbeck die and was she the mother of all the children mentioned in Lawrence's will?
What was the maiden name of Lawrence's wife Catherine and when were they married?

Does anything in your file of material, Walter, or in Irene Shoemaker's books add light to this info?

And Mary, does your Van Buskirk file of material contain any answers?

HELP!

Bill

Greetings Joanne,
I'm putting together some ancestry for some friends. I've collected info for their ancestor, Mary E who married Franklin Hall. And in the process I've also picked up the marriages of Mary's sisters. They all had marriages in Massachusetts and their mother also re-married there. I notice that you have had some responses and may already have what you need but if not I can provide some info for you. I've found nothing regarding their brother Garret.
Bill

Thanks, Bill, for all this info. It tallies pretty much with what I have, but does add some ideas on how/why Jemima Potts and her daughter arrived in Nova Scotia.

I'm not sure how Obed and his family tie in with Garret, however. I have 12 children for Garret VanB and Elizabeth Potts, but none of them is Obed.

Am not sure just what info you need regarding John Van Buskirk. i don't see any connection with him in the families I'm trying to trace but a check made this afternoon provided the following;
The 1900 census lists John's mother "Lizzie" with son George H Van Buskirk at Malden. Lizzie is a widow running a boarding house. She immigrated in 1886 and provides her birthplace and that of her parents as Newfoundland.
The 1920 US census lists John and wife Helen at Malden with children Helen, Franklin, George and Albert ages 6,5,4and 1 respectively. John is 35 and said he was born in Massachusetts but I doubt it. Neither his birth nor his father's death are included in the Massachusetts vital records although they could have taken place in another state. I would bet that Lizzie was still a widow with two boys when she came to the US.
John was not with his widowed mother and brother when the 1900 US census was taken. Info on the 1930 US census shows he was in the army---in the Phillipines. This was during the Spanish American War.
John's mother, Lizzie (Elizabeth) died at Malden 3 Jan 1904 aged 49 years and 11 months. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Servier, born on Prince Edward Island, daughter of Thomas and Catherine (French) Servier, both born in Newfoundland. Note that the 1900 census gave Elizabeth's birthplace as Newfoundland.
John Van Buskirk married Helen F Noonan 30 Oct 1912 at Malden. Her parents were listed as Edward and Honoria (Lavanway) Noonan. The 1910 US census of Boston Ward 13 provides info that they both were born in Ireland. This census listd their children as Margaret, Mary, Ellen (should be Helen, I believe), Anna, Cecilia, Elizabeth, Agnes and Francis. Their ages were given as 22,19,17,15,14,13,10 and 6 respectively. Edward's age was listed as 55 and Honoria's as 45.
I can run copies of some of this source stuff for you if you are interested.

While attempting to put together some ancestry of some friends who are g-g-grandchildren of Obed Van Buskirk and Julia Banks, I ran across your message while searching the web. The info in Clarence Torrey's Gates article in vol 121 of the N.E. Register provides info that Jemima Potts was in Nova Scotia when she supposedly married Oldham Gates about 16 years after he died. The info that she was in the area and married him, however, is helpful. The Ryerson Genealogy by Albert Ryerson and Alfred Holman contains info that Garret Van Buskirk's wife, Elizabeth Potts, was a step-daughter of Oldham so Jemima can be established as the mother of Elizabeth. As to your question as to how Jemima, whose family you feel was from the New York area but wound up in Nova Scotia, here is a possibility for you to consider.
When the loyalists were being evacuated in 1783 from New York and removed by ships to the area which is currently Saint John, New Brunswick (but was part of Nova Scotia until 1784) the British created ship passenger lists. These lists are included in Early Loyalist Saint John by D.G.Bell. Garrett Van Buswick and family are listed as passengers in what was known as the spring fleet. The family prior to boarding in New York consisted of 1 adult male, 2 adult females, two children under 10 and 2 servants. The content of the family upon arrival at the Saint John area in the spring of 1783 was the same except for one less servant who apparently didn't make the trip. The name of the ship on which each refugee family was carried was not included in the spring fleet passenger lists although was included in the lists for the subsequent two trips that the fleet made in the summer and the fall of 1783. The spring fleet passenger list also includes a Lawrence Van Buskirk who was probably Garret's father plus a John and a Hendrick Van Buskirk who were no doubt Garret's brothers.
One of the two adult females that were with Garrett when he made the trip was, no doubt, Garrett's wife. The other could have been his mother-in-law, Jemima. The family of Garret's father, Lawrence, contained 2 adult females so the second female in Garret's family probably wasn't his mother.
Garret's family didn't remain at Saint John since it didn't appear in the victualling lists of 1874 which also are included in the Early Loyalist Saint John book. Esther Wright's book, The Loyalists of New Brunswick, lists Garrett's family in Kings County, which is adjacent to Saint John County, New Brunswick. No date is given for them being in Kings Co but we know that some time later the family wound up in Aylesford, Nova Scotia.
You mentioned that you had info regarding Garrett's descendants. If you are collecting such info, and are interested, I can provide some info regarding the daughters and wife of Obed Van Buskirk. After Obed died they all wound up in New England and ultimately in Massachusetts. Obed's wife remarried in Massachusetts.
Bill
This is interesting! I haven't, I don't think, heard this story about Daniel. I am familiar with the George and Sarah Susanna (probably Ashton) family. Although I have collected data over the years, this isn't a line on which I have concentrated.

I'll try to look back in my records, but I don't think I can help you. I'm glad you made the post. Perhaps others will know something.

Good Evening
You seem to have the pulse on the Van Buskirk Family Tree. I am looking for information about a break in the family line. According to my information; Joseph Van Buskirk b.1751 Bucks Co., PA, son of George(Joris)VB and Sarah.
Married Mary Lever b.1821 Hamilton Twp Monroe Co., Pa
Joseph was also married to Mary Strawn
They had several children, but as the story goes, Daniel Van Buskirk was a boy that was taken in by Joseph. This was by arrangement of the boy's parents, or in payment of a debt. I recall seeing Joseph's will, and the bulk of his belongings he willed to Daniel in appreciation of his devotion. Daniel died in 1846 and is buried in Scott Co Indiana. Daniel and his wife Hannah Jones had 12 children, his son Joseph Van Buskirk born 1822 and buried in Gypsum, Ks is my great grandfather. Since Daniel was "adopted", our line does not appear in Ms. Shoemaker's book. What we would love to know, is who were Daniel's parents. Have you heard of this story? There is some indication the boy's last name was Titus, but not sure. Thanks!

Hi Barry

I am a direct descendent of Garret and Eliza, and am more or less actively searching, though with frequent lapses.

I have not been able to find out much about Eliza (or Betsy) Potts, apart from what I'm guessing you know judging from the list of surnames (Alberti, Burtis, etc) you provide.

I noted this down at one time from Genforum (Susan):
"Who was Jemima Potts? This might be worth a look. 'The Annals of Newtown in Queens County, New York and also Long Island Families' by D. Fanshaw in 1852, page 397 says that Samuel Alburtis m. June 1, 1724 Elizabeth VanDerVoort and had a daughter named Jemima Alburtis (no date of birth given) who married John Potts. On FamilySearch, I found that someone had entered this information, giving the date of Jemima's marriage to John Potts as August 15, 1761 at the Presbyterian Church of Newtown, NY. This was not a vital record and there was no citation given. Another entry at FamilySearch lists the Elizabeth Potts who married Garrett van Buskirk of Aylesford, Nova Scotia as being the child of this couple."

I do not know anything about John Potts (one of my brick walls), nor do I know when Jemima and Eliza came to Canada (or even whether they came with or without John). I have a note that Oldham Gates came to Canada in 1760, so he and Jemima must have married in Nova Scotia. But I have no idea what brought her there.

I have also run into a lot of confusion about Oldham Gates's wives (perhaps you can clarify). I have written this note to myself: [Oldham Gates] "married Jemima Potts before 1779 [Jemima's daugher Elizabeth is referred to at her marriage in 1779 as a step-daughter of Capt. Gates].; she died 1816; however, Oldham Gates's will in 1797 names his wife as Jennie..." [Did he mean Jemima? or Jennie Dow?]

I have a death date for Samuel Alburtis of 14 Oct 1776, in Jamaica, Long Island, NY, probably from Rootsweb.

So, I actually have more questions for you than answers. Sorry.

Mary VanBuskirk
(Garret VB -> Henry VB -> William C VB -> William F VB -> William F.W.
ISO: Laverne VanBuskirk

There is mention of a Laverne VanBuskirk buried in the Owl Creek-North Fork Cemetery, Knox Co, Ohio, where some of my relatives are buried. I have not been able to identify who this person is, so if anyone knows, could you please post it?
Thanks!!
---------
http://letterboxing.org/BoxView.php?boxnum=29301&boxname...

Immediately after the War of 1812, “Ohio Fever” spread to thousands of emigrants, mostly from Pennsylvania, as they flocked to this part of Central Ohio in search of cheap and fertile land. John Ogle, who came to Ohio along with the Blair family, was the first known white man to build a cabin in the Morrow County area of Perry Township. He was soon followed by Benjamin Hart, John Ackerman, and William Levering. Here, the new settlers found water supplied by the North Fork of Owl Creek and its tributaries, good soil for growing wheat, corn and oats, and several different varieties of trees including walnut, oak, hickory, elm, ash, sugar maple, cherry, and beech.
One of the earliest settlers to this area in 1812 was a preacher from the old-school Baptist church by the name of John Cook. Soon after his arrival to this area, Cook, along with twenty other local settlers, formed the Owl Creek Baptist Church, North Branch. In 1815, on two acres at the site of the present day church building, Cook erected a log meetinghouse and started a cemetery. Despite the presence of this meetinghouse, its crude construction and lack of warmth and furnishings forced Cook to hold most of the church’s meetings in the members’ homes or at the nearby schoolhouse until 1833. At this time, church members began constructing a framed meetinghouse, but their efforts were soon halted by a fire shortly before its completion. Once again, church members resorted to building another log meetinghouse and meeting in the cabins of neighborhood church members until another framed building, named Harmony Baptist Church, was constructed in 1874.
This letterbox is located in North Fork Cemetery next to Owl Creek Harmony Primitive Baptist Church found in Troy Township. The cemetery can be reached from the west by taking State Route 19 until it turns into County Road 22. Continue on County Road 22 until you go .8 mi. east of State Route 314. Just before reaching the Morrow/Knox County line, you will notice the plain, white church and a small cemetery on your left. From the east, take State Route 13 to Waterford Road. Turn west on Waterford Road and continue past Kokosing plant, through the town of Waterford, and about ¼ mi. past the Morrow/Knox County Line. Waterford Road eventually turns into County Road 22 at the county line. Shortly after crossing the line, you will notice the church on your right. But be careful when traveling in both directions! Amish settlements are in this area. Watch out for many of the Amish buggies and pedestrians that you may pass along the way!
Once in the cemetery, take time to read many of the tombstones. Although some of the tombstones have been knocked over, moved, or are no longer readable, you will notice the surnames of many of the early settlers of this area. In the “fenced area” of the cemetery, beside the church and almost even with the front door of the church, you will notice a tall, unusual tombstone in the shape of a tree trunk which bears the name “Amos Hart.” Find the last two digits of the year he was born and walk that many degrees toward the tallest monument in the cemetery. Find the name Laverne VanBuskirk. From this monument, walk 90 degrees due east for 55-65 steps until you come a rotten stump. Leaning against the stump is the blackened tombstone of Margaret C. wife of C Finnell. Look behind the tombstone and inside of the stump to find “Old Church Cemetery.” Please cover carefully when finished and avoid letterboxing when church is in session. Also, do not allow young children to climb on the tombstones because they are no longer stable. A warning sign is located on the fence just outside of the cemetery.

I am not related but am currently repairing a badly broken gravestone for Michael (Van)Buskirk and am hoping for some help. This stone and two others were shattered when a car drove through the cemetery. I tried to find every piece but there are still some fragments missing which is making the detailed epitaph difficult to decipher. I will be filling the missing areas and sculpting in the missing letters, so I want to be sure of what I put in stone!

Michael appears to have been an important person from the research I have done so far. This is the inscription of the gravestone: Michael Buskirk/ BORN IN VIA./ Jan, 28, 1782/ DIED/ July 16, 1856/ AGED 74Y. 5M. & 10D/ He emigrated west in early/ life; was a soldier in the war/ of 1811&12; was one of the/ first settlers of Monroe Co./ Ind: was one of its first Co./ Commissioners; Helped to ???/ ???ise the Co. and locate ????/ Co. sea????s afterwards ass???/ inte?????udge for ?????n years.

As you can see it gets pretty iffy at the end due to missing pieces and general wear. I figure if anyone knows his accomplishments they may help me fill in the blanks. I also have photos of the gravestone if that would help.

Michael was the son on Isaac and Jerusha (Littell) Van Buskirk and is buried in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

Thank you for your help!
