Steven,
I believe that Johannes Van Dam's mother, Grietje (your great great grandmother) was the sister of my great great grandfather who also immigrated to the Muskegon area. I would love to compare information. Drop me a line if you are interested in corresponding. The family was from 't Zandt, which is in the province of Groningen. There was another sister that came to Spring Lake.

Doris,
I believe I have some information for you. By what you have posted about John Van Dam, I believe that was my grandfather. Although, his name is actually John Dam, then adopted and became John Ruimveld - hence my maiden name. His siblings were Effie, William Thomas and Hermina "Minnie" Dam who was adopted by Anna Buiskool. I have much more information if you would like to share. You may reach me at JNalett63@aol.com

VanDam

We have an extensive history of VanDams, originally of the Netherlands (Groningen area, especially around Delfzil)and then of Michigan (Grand Rapids area). Since Dutch names use the father's name as a middle name, if you have the middle name for Johannes, it would help trace. My grandfather was Peter Gerard VanDam, born 26 November 1892 in Grand Rapids. His father was Gerard Jans VanDam, born 23 November 1846 in Westeremden, Groningen, Netherlands. If this is the line your interested in, I have it to mid-1700s.
