I am interested in Cornelius & Elizabeth's child, Gertrude, born in 1880. You posted a long time ago that you thought she married into the Van Sanders family of NJ. I have a Gertrude, born abt 1880, who married Richard Van Saders. Could this be your Gertrude?

I found the marriage register for Cornelius Vanderbeck & Elizabeth Witte.

thanks,
Cheryl

Here is my info so far:
Celeste Vanderbeek, was my grandmother. She was b. 10/31/1889, to Cornelius & Rebecca (Mount), one of 5 daughters, & a brother who d. in infancy. She was b. in NY, as the family moved to NY before the children were born. Celeste's husband was Samuel Darrow. Her father, Cornelius, was b. in NJ 2/10/1857. His father was James V., b. June, 1828 in NJ. James was m. to Rachel Stoltz in NYC. I have both James' & Rachel's death certs, & James' death cert says his father was Jacob Vanderbeek. Jacob was probably b. in NJ between 1780 & 1810. If any of this looks likely, would appreciate your input.

Hi, this shows how new I am - I am not sure how to go back and find Gina's link as I e-mail them now quite often and they post the stuff to both her site and another lady's site. However I did send them both this message board link so that they can send you messages.
Look forward to hearing from you again - hopefully if we are connected - which it sounds like from the "Indian princess" story - with the other two ladies help we can figure it out!
Thank you, Ellen
Hello - wow - such a quick answer.
Now let's see if I can give some quick answers.
My Family tree is still under constuction as I am just learning the system, but there are others in my family group that have done quite a bit of research and have more connections etc.
My Gr-Great Grandma was Susan Irene Baxter whose mother was Joyce/Joice Vanderbeck (beek?)whose father was a Cornelius Vanderbeck. Joyce was born in New York, but have seen an alternate B-place of New Jersey?
While I have not proved it - on a Census of Michigan in the 1860's or 1870's - something I recently tracked down she and Elias Baxter (who she married in New York State) and lived in Parma for the 1860 or 1850 Census moved to Michigan after - initally Eaton Rapids but (I apolgize don't have info at fingertips) lived near who I believe to be her brother named John Vanderbeck who was married to an Ellen and there is a list of those children on this (?) Michigan Census (on line at Ancestry - probably somewhere else too?)
Quite often back then people moved in groups to came shortly after if the area looked good.
So there was my Susan Vanderbeck Baxter living next to a John Vanderbeck - additionally - while this may not be of interest to you they lived near a family named Searles - whom were either related or very good friends of - since I have post cards from members of the Searles family sent to my Gr-Gr-Granma Susan Irene (who usually went by the Irene or "Renie")
Along with these are cards from a few other Vanderbecks including many froma Minnie Vanderbeck. Just today I found a lady on a message board looking for relatives of a Minnie Vanderbeck ...to whom I have sent a message.
If you go to ANcestry you and type in links to the Vanderbeck's who will see a Sherry and a Gina who are also looking into this family - they are relatives through my Gr-Gr and Great-UNcles.
They have pictures, I belive of some of the tombstones and pictures that gave them of the Baxter's including a picture of Joyce/hoice Vanderbeck Baxter and her husband Deniston/Dennis Baxter. That is as far back as we go with pictures.
My mom may remember more stories, but the one that always stuck in our heads were the stories about the ancestor who came to New York - married an Indian Princess (although - just to modesty and with a nod to reality - just said was an Indian).
This person, as we were told owned, as I said land/farm on Wall St. and again as I said once (should have paid more attention) found a listing for an early settler whose name was (just came back to me) I beliver Jacob (sp?) Vander Beek and the listing was that he was orignally a soldier(?) on the census or some similar listing - Dutch usually were good record keepers.
That is as much as I can remember at this time; one goal this winter is to read all the backs of all these old post cards to try to pick up stories and relatives /connections.
Gina's web, I believe has posted the cards? As one of them was written by Joyce Vanderbeck Baxter (so cool)
Well, as I am at work, I need to go to lunch.
OK-so glad to hear from someone after so much time. I have since found out my ggfather Cornelius' father was James V., b. 1828. On James' death cert it say his father was Jacob V. I am still trying to find out WHICH Jacob, since there are so many. James V.'s wife was Rachel Stolts-Steltz-Stultz, etc. whichever. I have her death cert also. I know nothing further, only Jacob's name, & that he was the father of James b. 1828, making him probably b. around 1800. I have much info on this line up to this point. Please explain the stories you were told-places, names, legends, etc. so we can maybe connect.

Same info needed on her. Jacob Vanderbeek married Sarah Ten Eick b.10-16-1801. Sarah was Phoebe's sister. Was Jacob the brother of Andrew Vanderbeek? Were Andrew and Phoebe V.parents of aforementioned Debora V? Were Jacob and Sarah V. her parents? Appreciate some help! Are there different families based on spellings? For example Marritje Ten Eyck on 10-17-1749 married Jaques Van Derbeek b.1723. Ten Eick and Ten Eyck are different lines, I suspect Vanderbeek and Van Derbeek might be as well. Marritje's parents came from Ulster Co.,NY to Somerville NJ.

Address of Charles A. Vander Beeck, Mobile, AL 1906

From the Mobile, Alabama newspaper
August 13, 1906

"The many friends of Mrs. Charles A. Vander Beeck will be pained to hear of her serious illness at the family residence, 808 North Jackson street."

This is not my line, just sharing, but you should know that Mobile is port city and many of its residents during the 1800's had homes there and in some other major eastern cities. They usually wintered in Mobile and spent the hot months in thier homes in New York or other eastern places. This may give someone a hint for searching for thier ancestors.

Am seeking information on Aeltje Paulus VanDerBeek, born May, 1649 in Flatlands, Long Island, NY and died May 30, 1710 in Flatlands, Long Island, NY. She married Janse Dirckse Amerman, born 1649 in Holland. They had 2 children that I know of, Albert Dirckse Amerman, born 1674 in Flatlands, Long Island, NY, and Maria, who married Cornelius Symonse Van Arsdalen. Maria and Cornelius had a child named Petronella, who married Abraham Lott. Maria's brother, Albert Dirckse Amerman married Greetjie Aumack, and they had a son, Albert, born 1718 in Flatlands, Long Island, NY. Would like information on the VanDerBeek family, esp. Aeltje Paulus, who married Janse Dirckse Amerman in 1668. sbeddy@en-tel.net

I don't have my Vanderbeeks back to the
1600's, even though I do believe they came into this country
and first settled in NY before moving to Hackensack, NJ.
I have an Abraham Vanderbeek,b.1791 and I have his parents
listed as Jan Vanderbeek and Aaltji (Alida) Hopper Vanderbeek. And your second message about Isaac, I have
an Isaac Vanderbeek m. Sarah Ann Bogert, Isaac's parents
were John Vanderbeek and Jane Campbell.

I'm not sure if our families connect but they could. If you
want to contact me, please do it direct to ggrams@myexcel.com/

There were 3 John J.'s born in New Barbados around the same time. Just don't know which one is mine. Also tied in with the Demarests, Coles and the Zabriskies.

Help! I have hit a genealogical brick wall. I am tracing the Vanderbeek's of Hackensack. I have gotten as far as Jacob Vanderbeek (1811 0r 1821) who married Magdelina Brinkerhoff ( 1813 or 1825) The census shows that his parents were born in NJ. Everyone around that time seems to be named Jacob or have a son Jacob so I am having difficulty determining the parents.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Tracie Bruno (maiden name Vanderbeek)

In the Portland Historical Accounts..

Henrietta Legge Ellison, later Failing, was a grandaughter of Nathaniel Van Der Beek, a Revolutionary War Hero. Mary was her mother's name, Mary Van De Beek, who married Henry Ellison.

Henry died when Henrietta was an infant. There were no siblings. Perhaps Mary Vander Beek had some, or cousins. I have no clue.

Steffy

She was born on 10 June 1704.From what I can tell this is where my family hooks into the location of Hackensack, NJ. Perhaps we can see some more similarities in our family lines. I find it interesting that your message here was placed the same day as my research on my Vanderbeek grandfathers lines. Janis Bates Harman

Re: Garrett Odell Vanderbeck/Clute/Discon

Garrett Odell Vanderbeck was born to Harmon Vanderbeck and Catherine Fox (Vos) of Saddle River, NJ. Harmon was born in 1810 to Paulus and Annetjie Vanderbeck. Paulus was born in 1791. I can trace the family back to a Paulus Vanderbeeck who arrived in New Netherlands in the 1640's and married a Marie Thomas Badie.
Garrett had an older sister named Sarah. She is my great great grandmother. I even have a restored tintype picture of her. While I have not come across any information regarding a Clute indian, my grandmother used to say that she thought there may ahve been indian blood in her mother's family. My father tells me that this was because my great grandmother Ethelyn (Sarah's daughter) had high cheekbones. Perhaps there was more to it. I have a fair amount of documentation. Harmon and Catherine are also buried at Greenwood; however, there names do not come up in the Greenwood electronic search. Only after getting Harmon's death certificate, did the cemetery admit that many of the buriels from pre 1900 have not been logged into their computer. They did send me the information they had on file at that point. Funny enough, I was just up looking at Garrett's headstone this past St. Patrick's day. Feel free to emial me with any information you may ahve, and i will galdly send you my information. I can tell you that many of Garrett's ancestors are buried in Ridgewood, NJ at the Old Paramus Dutch Reformed church off Route 17.

-John Fischer
johnfischer66@yahoo.com

My Cornelius Vanderbeek's father was James, b. in NJ. His wife was Rachel Stelts, I believe. I have him in the 1880 NJ census, but am unable to go further back without an index to the earlier censuse.

I have tried to locate a Clute tribe with no success. It must be a surname, I did a search on Google & this is what came up with:Carlisle Indian School students:
if you scroll down to the Seneca tribe you see four people with the last name Clute. Since Seneca are from upstate NY, think maybe this is a clue? members.aol.com/tawodi/carlisle/page8.htm.
my e-mail:mheeks@yahoo.com.

Lorraine,
My great grandfather John J. Vanderbeek, married to a Cornelia. John Born 1845, Cornelia born 1948. Early Hackensack. I'm looking for Cornelia's maiden name and specifically which are John J.'s parents. There were a few born in "New Barbados". I'm sure these are my ancestors because I found them in the 1900 cencus. Could we be talking about the same people?
Donna
