I have done a huge amount of research on our common ancestors, the family of Alice Claypoole Gwynne Vanderbilt's mother Rachel Moore Flagg Gwynne Mathews (a.k.a. Aunt Cettie). I shared some of that material with Syvvie Szechenyi Szapary for her book on the Flaggs, and will be glad to do so with you. Thanks!

I see it has been a few years since you posted this message, but I am trying to make our family connection from the Van Auken line to the Vanderbilt line. My grandmother, Nellie Van Auken had an autograph book (I now have it), with signatures of Sarah and William Vanderbilt, from Melrose, Iowa, 1880. I believe they were cousins, but not sure. My grandmother always told me we were distant relatives of the Vanderbilts. I appreciate any help you can give.

Donna T.

The marriage I believe took place in NJ. Children are Louisa, Ezekiel, Emma, Cornelius, Electa, Martha - there may be older children I did not find in the census. Last four children are born in NYC. Family will settle in Greenpoint Brooklyn area. Do these names sound familiar to anyone?

Kate,
I was just wondering if you had anything on R.T.'s parentage. My John Wilson,(who is my brick wall) was born 1835. He was enumerated along with his family with Clementine Johnstons' just about the time R.T. shows up in Loudon Co., Tn. I have never been able to place John with any other Wilsons in the area. I am now working the assumption that he must be related to R.T. somehow. Why is is that R.T. just happens to show up in Loudon and take a job at a general store? Got to be a family tie somewhere. Unless it is just a fabulous coincidence. There is a pic of John in the Loudon Co. Heritage book. I have never seen one of R.T., would love to see if there is resemblence.
Donnie

I found a record of John D. Vanderbilt, son of Dirck Vanderbilt & Sarah Hennion, vorn 2 Feb 1790, Clarkstown Twp., Rockland, NY. He was married to Margrietje de Clark on 25 Feb 1815 and he died 2 Feb 1868 (on his birthday). This was listed on LDS Family Search.

Derick Vanderbilt is listed on pages 163 & 165 in Rockland Co. 1810 census.
Birth date is not correct but other info seems likely.

Hello!

I am searching for photos and information on Richard Thornton (R.T.) Wilson.

He was the father of Grace Graham Wilson Vanderbilt...who was married to Cornelius Vanderbilt the III. R.T. had a son, I believe it was Marshall Orme, who married John Jacob Astor IV's sister, Caroline. Another son, R.T. Jr., was a prominent NYC socialite.

Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

~kate

Hi, I have just begun researching my family history and I find it facinating. I am the daughter of Arthur Vanderhorst Gwynne. His father had the same name (I think) and I am pretty sure that his grand father was Abram E. Gwynne. I have found that Abraham E. Gwynne and Rachel (Cettie) Moore Flagg had six children, Alice Claypoole, Cettie Moore, Abraham Evan, Mary, David Eli, and Edith Olivia. Mary died as an infant. I found information on marriages and some children for the rest, but would like to find more info, especially about Abraham Evans who I think is my great-grandfather.

Cynthia Gwynne

I HAVE WRITTEN HER STORY AFTER ABOUT 10 YEARS OF RESEARCHING HER VANDERBILT HISTORY AND IT WILL BE PUBLISHED THIS SUMMER IN THE VOLUME NUMBER 6 OF RIDERS STORIES PUBLISHED BY THE ORPHAN TRAIN SOCIETY. I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE ELSE SEARCHING THIS LINE. THANK YOU.

I am also interested in the descendants of Jacob H. Vanderbilt (1856). Example: when and where did he die? When my mother died, she left us a copy of his Sandy-Hook NJ Pilots license (renewal). It was stamped 1864. She also left us a beautiful pocket watch (no inscription) which we believe belonged to Jacob.
We are trying to find the link between my mother’s family (Schill) and the Vanderbilt’s. We have an old photo album, but none of the pictures are identified. My cousin also has pictures, and one of them shows Jacob and his employees at his Lumber yard (in New City NY).
Thanks in advance.
Carol
Hello Cousin,

Murray Vanderbilt was my uncle. Your Grandfather lived his young life in Logan County West Virginia. Yes his father's name was Andrew Vanderbilt who was born approx. 1895. Andrew lived with his daughter Susie (now deceased) until his passing in his late nineties in Chicago Illinois. Uncle Murray's grand mother's name was Sylvia Riddle Vanderbilt, and his Grandfather's name was Jerry Vanderbilt. I was named after him. Murray had two uncles who lived there in Detroit 1.) Frank Vanderbilt, and 2.)Henry Vanderbilt Who had a lot of children. There were two or three more uncles, brothers of Andrew however I have forgotten their names. Andrew who was Murray's Father fought in world War I but hated to talk about his experiences, he told me everytime that I would ask him about it " I took an oath not to talk about it." All of your grand uncles have passed away. Your father's mother Mattie passed away here in Chicago back around 1950, I loved her very much. She came here from West Virginia to get better medical help for a sickness. I remember the day she passed--the doctor's mis-diagnosed her
problem. Her body was returned to Logan W.V for burial.
Murray married there in Detriot.
You have relatives there in Detroit, Wichita Kansas, Chicago, Birmingham Alabama, Washington D.C., New Jersey, and just outside of Detroit in Redford Michigan.

Murray went to school there in Logan with 3 sisters, and one adopted brother. The oldest of the three sisters was Kathleen who lived in Texas unitl her passing about 3 years ago. The next sister was Willa Mae who passed away back in the early 1970's. Last was my Mother Susie. Murray Vanderbilt moved to Detroit from Logan West Virginia in the late 1040's or very early 1950's. Murray worked for the Chrysler plant for many years. I used to help Murray drive back and forth during the summer months from Detroit to Chicago when Chrysler was on strike. Murray was very sharp, he went to school for television electronics, and used to repair broken televisions when he was out of work on strike.

I have to go now.
Stay in touch.
Jerry
jztari2@earthlink.net
Hoping someone can help. I am looking for any information anyone may have regarding a Cornelius Vanderbilt/Vanderbelt found in the 1850 NYC 17th ward census. He is married to Martha born circa 1805. Both Martha & Cornelius are born in NJ. Their children are Louise, Ezekiel, Anna, Cornelius and Martha. Cornelius's occupation is a Coach-maker. I believe I find him again in the NYC 1869 Directory listed as a Coach-maker living at 27 Avenue D. I can't find this family in any other census records. Do these people sound familiar to anyone else?
