To add to your post. Most spelling's of names back then got mixed up because of 1. Education (of the one writing the name and/or the one GIVING the name).

Think of it, a very thick Dutch accent. They ask his name he pronounces it Vandross (however, it is actually spelled Vanderhorst). So, the person writes it how it sounds. And, if the person 'giving' the name doesn't know how to spell ... waahlaah ... a spelling change comes to exhist.

I am the direct descendant of Samuel and Annie (Williamson)Vanderhorst. The oral history is that the Vanderhorst family changed their name from Vandross to Vanderhorst.
According the the 1870 census the Vanderhorst family was recorded as Vanderhorst. Later, in the 1880 census-William Henry Vanderhorst was recorded as Vandross, this is the only time the family is listed as Vandross.
Guadalupe Vanderhorst-Rodriguez

Odd to go from Vandross to Vanderhorst.
Perhaps you knew this already, but here is some info that may be useful.

In Charleston County the name (street as well as people)"Vanderhorst" is pronounced by natives as Vandross, the "o" bearing a long vowel sound. The change of name was probably only a change of spelling, not of pronunciation.

Gary Brown

Re: John Vanderhorst m Mary Elizabeth Foisson

I have just discovered that Elias Foisson (1710-1767) was also spelled Foisseau, which my ancestors spelled Fayssoux. Dr. Peter Fayssoux (Pierre Foisseau 1745-1795) of Charleston, SC was Surgeon General of the Southern Army during the Revolutionary War. His father Daniel Fayssoux (Foisseau), a baker, may have originated in Picardie, France and emmigrated to S.C., possibly via England. We believe Daniel's wife was Frances Bocquet (1720-1768), sister to Peter Bocquet, baker, of Charleston. Possibly from the area of Lyon, they may have emmigrated to Berne, Switzerland before coming to Charleston.
Interestingly, Dr. Fayssoux's daughter Martha Ferguson married Peter Foissin (Foisson?), grandson of Elias. Naturally, we are wondering what relationship there may be between Elias Foisson and Daniel Fayssoux (Foisseau.) Brothers? Cousins? This has always been a genealogical dead end and great frustration to all the Peter Fayssoux descendants. Can anyone help us establish this connection?

Benedict van der Horst in Holland > Ohio

Here is what I found:

Benedict (Bernard) Vanderhorst (Van Der Horst) was born Feb. 14, 1805 in Germest, Holland to Henricos Petnonella (Hickers) Vanderhorst. Maria Van Oss (Osch) was born Nov. 19, 1796 to Johannes Jacoba (Von de Huevel) Van Osch. They married Feb. 2, 1826 in Oss, Holland.

In 1851, they immigrated from Holland to Minster, Ohio with (5) sons: Joseph (at age 14), Jacob (15), Peter(19), John (23) and Henry (26). I have no records of any daughters, although there may have been some.

Their son Peter is my great-great grandfather. I have more info on the children and generations since, but unfortunately, this is all I have on Benedict Vanderhorst.

In your message, you mentioned (6) children. Is there someone (a daughter) I am missing? I would also appreciate any info you have about Benedict that I haven't mentioned.

Thank You.

Hi Mary Lou,
I finally got your message. it must be you who gave my grandma the wedding documents from Poland. I understand them a little because I speak some Polish and German. I hope to go back to Poland to do some research. You can see what I have got so far at my website www.geocities.com/jatoska Leo probably has it all. But did he contact a Marrion Toska from East Tawas Michigan? She was married to a Robert Joseph Toska who was also a Trzebiatowski from his father. Who lived very close to John Nicholas in Michigan on the same street.
