There is a family gravesite on the Vanderpool Farm in Kentucky. The farm is actually a huge mountain once owned by my grandfathers father. Now owed by Cleo Vanderpool or actually his wife as Cleo just passed. Cecil is my grandfather and there were 9 or 10 kids i the family.

Would be delighted to have some additional information on your line, especially the children and their spouses of David Henry Vanderpool (b. 1862) and his wife Mary Rowland; also on Joseph W.

Thank you. I suspect the information in the Maries Co. book is in error. In 1870 Maries County, MO William Geromini, 45, is enumerated with a 20-year-old wife, Martha J. In 1880, he is (age 55) and enumerated with a wife named "Nancy" who is 36 [which doesn't add up]. Three children are listed -- William, 9; Nancy, 7, and Henry, 6. In 1900 he is 75, and his wife is Martha, age 49 and they have 9 children, including two daughters, Rosa C., 22 and Mary M., 20, but Rosa and Mary are not listed in 1880 and at least Rosa should be. Perplexing. I have found the Missouri death certificates of some of the children who list their mother as Martha Vanderpool and father as William. I'll keep digging. Thanks for your help.
--Myra

Re: Untangling some Vanderpol lines

Ok, here is what I have. I have Martha Margaret married to William Geromini on 17 Feb 1865. I could not find a marriage record but they are on the census together. In the book Miller and Maries County Missouri Marriages it has William Geromini married to Mary Monica Vanderpool in 1879 I believe but I have found something that will back the marriage of William and Martha. It is from Chris Willis talking about her grandmother Martha Vanderpool Geromini.

"Mother remembers her grandmother Martha as a very prim and proper person. Since her health kept her from working she sat in her rocker dressed in her Sunday best day after day. She always wore a frilly white apron to give the illusion that she might be called upon to work at any time.

Martha had grown difficult in her old age..."Cantanerous" they said. She was a widow, and as was customary in those days she was expected to make her home with her married children. None of the family save daughter Margaret could put up with Grandmother Martha, so it was with Margaret Geromini and Henry B. Wilken that the old matriarch made her home.

She was a formidable obstacle to the Wilken children, for she kept an eye on all of their activities from her vantage point on the porch. Any and all mischief was promptly reported to Father who then was ordered to administer appropriate pubishment. Life to Grandmother Martha was a matter of checks and balances...one paid for everything!

As is the nature of children, Grandmother Martha was a challenge to their mischief-making. Each small transgression that went undetected was a triumph.

One day the two grandchildren found a nest of ground-puppies in the pasture. They packed the wiggling animals in the house, peeked through the curtains to observe a miracle! Grandmother was napping, still rocing away, dressed to the hilt but dozing!

The children tippy-toed out to her, stifling their giggles, they placed the ground-puppies in her lap, and tip-toed away to hide behind the curtains where they could watch the excitment when Grandma woke up.

To the children's astonishment, Grandmother Martha gently gathered up her apron-full of ground-puppies and showed no excitment at all! The only excitment the two children got was the excitment grandmother caused when she showed their mother what her two little darlings had done. This they had not anticipated! One PAID for everything.

Grandmother Martha (Vanderpool) Geromini died at the age of 78 years on 22 Jun 1929, at the home of her daughter in Chariton Co., Missouri. The arrangements were made for her burial with the Leopard Funeral Home at Menden, and she was buried in the McCullough Cemetery at triplet, MO..."

This doesn't state who she was married to, only that it was a Geromini. It also states she was widowed so it couldn't be the same Geromini that Mary Monica had married because Martha was still alive at the time. I found no mention of another Vanderpool sister marrying a Geromini. There was an Elizabeth that married a Henry Geromini and it was said that Martha Margaret sometimes went by Elizabeth so that opens another possibility. I hope this helps.

Untangling some Vanderpol lines

Does anyone descend from John Valentine Vanderpool (1815-1891) and Mary Pauline "Polly" VAUGHN (VON)(1826-1897)? I'm trying to prove/disprove the story about 3 of their daughters marrying the same man -- William GEROMINI in and around Maries County, Missouri. If anyone has a copy of marriages between VANDERPOOL women and William GEROMINI, please contact me. I mean real copies -- not from compiled/published/online material, which I already have.
These marriages supposedly took place in the 1860s and 1870s.

Another problem with John Valentine Vanderpool's family is with two purported children -- Mary E. (born ca 1871) and James M. (born ca 1877). They are listed as daughter and son with John V. Vanderpool and Polly in the 1880, Texas County, Missouri enumeration. I question this because of Polly's age -- she would have been about 46 and 54 years of age when these children were born --I think they are grandchildren, but can't place them. Appreciate any help on this.

Another fascinating VANDERPOOL fellow is William Tecumseh -- born 1865 in Caldwell County, MO, the son of Aden Carver VANDERPOOL and Caroline E. OWEN. William went to Alaska by 1900 and raised a large family there by a native woman. However, I've also discovered that William earlier had married a woman (Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" VINCENT) in Washington state (about 1892) and had two children by her. Those children were: Inez F. VANDERPOOL, born in 1893 in WA (nothing more on her) and Grover W. VANDERPOOL, born in 1896 in WA. He died in Seattle in 1958. Are there any descendants of these children out there that will share information?

Thanks.

Myra Vanderpool Gormley

dna.ancestry.com testing indicated I belong to haplogroup R1b, The Artisans. The closest match was 12 generations back or 550 years ago. I am really excited about these tests. I encourage more people to do the testing. It is only $79.00 and indicates the MRCA most recent common ancestor.
Whitley Co., KY Vanderpools buried @ Reed Family Cemetery

A number of Vanderpools are buried at the Reed Family Cemetery in Whitley Co., KY. Does this indicate a connection between the two families, other than just neighbors? If so, does anyone know what that relationship would be? Vanderpools buried (or owning plots) at Reed Cemetery are:

Clarence (1921 - )
Elbert L. (1917 - 1975)
Evelyn (1916 - 1992)
Jessie James (1931 - 1978)
Marion K. (1893 - 1969)
Nettie J. (1901 - 1977)
Noda (1919 - 1986)

I wonder if any of you have read the so called History of Bradford Cty by Heverly that states that Anthony went to Aquga before he went to Wyalusing. He states that Anthony and his friends that were traveling with him went on "down the river for fear of being detected". There is no other information. The writer doesn't explain what he means nor does he go into the subject with any detail. This person apparently was of the same elk as Joel Munsel of New York. They went around collecting data and putting it into book form. I'm sure they made money from doing this. I do know that in the Ackley family (as well as the Vanderpools) there has always been the family history that we were Indian and Dutch. My Ackley family comes through Rebecca Johnson daughter of Cornelius Johnson, a NY merchant of Kinderhook. She married Benjamin Ackley. This (the merchant thing) is documented through marriage notices of not only Rebecca but her father and mother. I have been unable to connect Cornelius with Elizabeth Johnson but if I were a betting person, I would bet my money that Cornelius is a member of that Johnson family. Rebecca is also listed as a maluto (plz excuse my spelling) in the 1880 census as are her children. That supposedly means Indian as the census listed Negros as B. At any rate this Heverly states that Elizabeth was an Oneida Indian. But does not verify his work. Can't remember off hand when this work was published, late 1800's or early 1900's. It's available in book form and cd. I have the cd. Anyone have any thoughts on this???

Just a couple of points of clarification:

1. Joel Munsell's Annals of Albany are not county or local histories such as Heverly wrote. The Annals are collections of records of historical interest. He took his information directly from various records not from family histories or other local histories.

At the time Heverly wrote his book, Elizabeth Jansen/Johnson was believed to be the daughter of Sir William Johnson, friend of the Iroquios Indians-especially the Mohawk and Oneida.

The indian ancestry of Elizabeth Jansen/Johnson would be Mahican. Her Jansen/Johnson family members lived in or near Mahican indian settlements including two major sites, Schodack and Shekamecko. In the 1770's, according to Van Alen store records, they lived at the Vislak or Fish Lake, a long time Mahican settlement.

Elizabeth Jansen/Johnson was the daughter of Willem Jansen/Johnson and Maria Elisabetha Lauck/variations. Willem was believed to have been a Loyalist and may have gone to Canada with some of his family. If so they returned about 1786, after his death, as in 1787 Elizabeth's siblings Richard (husband of a cousin Elizabeth Jansen), Anna Maria (wife of Henry Cornelius) and Lena (Magdalena-wife of Isaac Wheeler) all married at the DRC of Kinderhook. Elizabeth certainly had several other relatives who were Loyalists and I'm sure that contributed to the hostility that was felt in Kinderhook and was one of the reasons the family moved to Pennsylvania along with several of her siblings and their families.

2. Concerning the census notation of Mulatto. That does not mean indian, it means a person of MIXED race. It could mean White and Indian or White and Negro. USUALLY, it means the person has Negro blood.

Just a reminder for those thinking that Elizabeth Jansen was the daughter of Johannes Jansen and Jannetje Schermerhorn. It has been established that the daughter of Johannes Jansen and Jannetje Schermerhorn died before 1772 and could not have married Anthony Vanderpool in 1776.

The baptismal sponsors for the children of Anthony Vanderpool and his wife Elizabeth Jansen (baptized at the Reform Church of Kinderhook, Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York) were all relatives of Elizabeth Jansen, daughter of Willem Jansen and Maria Elisabetha Lauck(Luyck and variations. Their family was living in the Schodack, Rensselaer County/Kinderhook, Columbia County area from at least 1770 on. Their names show up in the baptismal record in the Reform Church of Muitzeskill, Renssealer County, NY for Elizabeth's brother Nicholas and in the records of Van Alen's store where Anthony (father of Catherine, Anthony, Abraham, Rachel and Wynant) Vanderpool's name also appears.

A pretty definitive history of Anthony (1754-1840) was published in the May 2007 issue of “The Settler,” quarterly magazine of Bradford County Historical Society. Page 52 lists the following children of Anthony Vanderpool and Elizabeth Jansen (known as Johnson in PA):
Willem (b 1780 NY), Anthony (b 1782 NY), Dirk (b 1874 NY), Petrus & Maria (twins b 1787 NY);
Samuel (b 1793 PA), Abraham (b 1796 PA), Lovina (b 1797 or 1798, PA), Henry (b 1800, PA), Catherine (b abt 1803, PA), Eleanor (b abt 1806, PA).
=
You can buy a copy of this issue of Settler from BCHS http://www.bradfordhistory.com
109 Pine Street
Towanda PA, 18848
570-265-2240
bchs@CQServices.com
Fax: 570 268-2964
= = = =
May 2007 Issue
Feature Articles
Anthony and Elizabeth (Jansen) Vanderpool --Richard McCracken and Terry Vanderpool
History of Bradford County 1891 --Bradsby
The Vanderpools and Johnsons --Bradford Star 1901
County Resident 103 Years Old --Reporter Journal 1902
Pioneer and Patriot Families --Heverly 1913
Tribute Planned at Grave --The Daily Review 1973
--The Daily Review 1973 --Joyce M. Tice
=
February 2007 Introduction -- Henry G. Farley
Several months ago I was contacted by Richard McCracken regarding a history of the Vanderpool family that he and Terry Vanderpool had compiled. McCracken’s objective was to have the piece published and he was making the offer to the Bradford County Historical Society to have this opportunity. I was pleased to have this submission as the work of Mr. McCracken and Mr. Vanderpool is well done and tells the accurate story of the family in Bradford County and will now be recorded for future generations. The writers acknowledge Mr. Donald Vanderpool for the use of his records and his research. Donald is no stranger to us at the Historical Society as he has done countless hours of research with us. The late Gladys Gay was so proud of Donald and his work and was very protective of the files Donald presented to the society. We have published articles in The Settler twice before that touched the Vanderpool line but nothing as extensive as this has ever been published by the society. “Doane Vanderpool” True story which was published in the Towanda Daily Review January 7, 1930 was reprinted in Vol. XXXII No. 1, February 1994 and “Johnson of Johnson Hall” was reprinted in Vol. II, No. 4 November 1954. I have included in this publication several Vanderpool histories that were printed in Bradford County history books and newspapers so that the reader can see the discrepancies in the story and how easy it was for history to be recorded incorrectly.
Also included in this volume is a piece from local historian Joyce M. Tice regarding the Centennial of the Carpenter and Pierce A1335 Postcard series. Joyce has posted these cards on her web site and we have included a few of them in this issue to entice you to look at the whole collection online as it is historically significant and very interesting. A special thank you to Joyce for her submission. The cards tell a part of our western county history through the photos taken 100 years ago.
Note: THE SETTLER is a quarterly publication of Bradford County History. This publication can be obtained by contacting us at bchs@CQServices.com. The cost of THE SETTLER is $4.25 (including shipping). THE SETTLER is also available in the Museum Gift Shop. You can automatically receive THE SETTLER by mail by simply becoming a MEMBER of the Society.

Thanks for the reply..that info keeps coming up to confuse people..I recently found a 1779 tax list showing Anthony Vander Poel with taxable property. I thought that was interesting. I spelled it as is was on the form. I wonder if it's the Anthony of Pa or his father? I asked about the rent receipts while I was at NYSL recently. What a song and dance one must go through to see those kinds of papers. Supposedly they are there. I was told that the listing does not show how much of the paperwork is there or if it's burned or charred etc. so one has no idea what they be getting to see. But I think it worthwhile. I'm still studying census to see if I can figure out the children - 5 boys and 1 girl in Kinderhook in 1790 verses what shows up in Pa. I know we only have 5 baptismals but the census of 1790 shows 6 children. And it appears there were no baptismals in Pa. Still a mystery.

my Vanderpool line

Well I am at a point that I feel I can write down my line. Thank goodness. There are still of course some points that need to be continued in the research area. But I now have the line back to Kinderhook. In the process I encountered at least 4 or 5 more lines. I can not thank those other researchers enough for their sharing of their work. We would be no where without all the researchers before us.
My line is the Anthony Vanderpool line of Bradford Cty Pa. As I go back it goes:
Louisa Decker Crebar 1948 - present. m Betty Louise Heath 1933-present, f William Harold Decker b3-4-1927 d 7-4-2004
Betty's m is Louise Sophia Whitmiller 1903 -1986, f Charles Whitmiller no dates at present.
LSW mother Rebecca Ackley b about 1885 d about 1963
Rebecca's mother was Margaret Ann Vanderpool b about 1860 died about 1890 from dropsey. Her mother is recorded as Mary no last name married to Richard Derick Vanderpool. He was born 1799 Asylum Pa d 1904 Burlington Pa son of William Vanderpool b 1780 Kinderhook NY. Mother was Polly/Mary Johnson, no info. Still looking. We think she might be a daughter of Nicholas Johnson brother to Elizabeth who went to Bradford Cty with AV also from Kinderhook. No way to verify. I am looking at the naming of the children that William and Polly had as to maybe a clue to grandparents. William is of course the first son listed to Anthony Vanderpool and his wife Elizabeth Jansen/Johnson. I am leaning towards believing his army deposition as far as his age is concerned. He said he was born in April of 1749. I believe he was baptized in 1754. I will continue to look for info concerning that, but he got his pension seemingly with no issue. I did find that his sister was said to be born in 1749 but now there are listings that she was born in 1748 and baptized in 1749, so maybe he was very correct about his history.
Margaret Ann Vanderpool married William Ackley b about 1856 d 1900 - 1930. His parents were Benjamin Ackley born about 1820 and Rebecca Johnson b about 1820 d about 1880. In the Ackley family it was said that a grandmother was part Indian. I am continuing to look into Rebecca as her father was Cornelius Johnson from Kinderhook married to Lovina/Lavina. There is a Cornelius Johnson listed on the 1790 census with small children. I have not yet concluded that is Cornelius with Lovina. Am working on that also. In Rebecca's wedding announcement, it lists her father as Cornelius Johnson a "merchant from NY".
In the process of all this I also came across my Decker line and the different lines making them up to the present day. So I ended up with pretty near 8 or 10 lines. We also were able to fill in the Heath line of my mother along the way and of course the Tubbs line. The Heath line goes back to Major General William Heath. The Tubbs line goes back to early 1600 and is well documented also. The names I have are as follows: Vanderpool,Johnson,Ackley,Whitmiller,Decker,Quick,Camp,Heath,Tubbs and Stark. There may be one or two that I missed, but can't think of any at the moment. If you have any of those names I would be happy to share what info I have... Thanking everyone again for your help, understanding and kindness.
Sincerely
Louisa Decker Crebar
Minister Heverly's original writings are at the Bradford Cty Historical Society. I personally saw no validation of any of his facts concerning the folks he wrote about except for census (which is available to everyone on line).. he did put together quite an essay of the counties of Pa - general information stuff on how the counties were formed etc from records - census of the time. He named families for each of the counties that settled there, again from the census of the time from what I could see - but does not give notes as to who he spoke to and got some of his additional info on people. There are some 10 volumes of this man's work. Again most of his base information comes from census for each area. There are those of us who do not necessarily go with the Wm. Johnson thing. No proof. We have mulattos listed in the same family of siblings listed as white. One sibling can not be white and another sibling of the same parents mulatto. Makes no sense. When there is no remarriage or prior marriage, all the kids from the same parents are white or mulatto - not one white and the next mulatto. Again makes no sense. The Ackley family is another family that is documented extensively. They are from Ct into NY by way of Orange Cty. They married into the Johnsons and Vanderpools in Wyalusing in 1822 and beyond. I doubt some of these points will ever be settled. Until I have proof of some of these points, I guess we will have to go by the census however erroneous they may seem. I am personally leaning towards the Christian father dissertation as are other VDP researchers here in Pa.

You mention that the ACKLEY family is very well documented. Is it possible that you would know of Matilda/Malinda born 1807 in New York and died ?. Matilda married George Alltop/Altop in 1826. George died ? and Matilda married Benjamin Weekley. Also, Mary Madalina Ackley b: 1797, New York, supposed to have married Thomas Alltop/Altop. Thomas died soon after marriage. Mary married Benjamin Weekley and had a few children. When Mary died in 1848 in Ohio, Benjamin married Matilda (who had a few children from George). Then Matilda died in Ohio ? Benjamin raised all of the children and Russell/Rusha Ackley lived with Benjamin after the two wives died (in Ohio) Can anyone help me with these families? Thank you
Jo
