Thomas Vandever/Samuel Cobb Orange County Indiana

I am looking for anyone who may have come across information on a Samuel Cobb in connection with Thomas Vandever. Both were justice of the peace and circuit judges in Orange County Indiana in the early 1800s and their names were often found together in various documents. Thomas Vandever died in 1844 in Illinois, however, no information seems to exist about Samuel Cobb and he has become a major brick wall for his descendants. If you have any information I would greatly appreciate it!

Cathy
I only have a middle initial for Josephine, V. And I did not have Thomas's middle name, which thanks to you I do now have.

I had Walter as a son, but no middle initial, which again thanks to you I now have.

The C. in James C. Vandever may be Cooper, I'll have to dig around till I find why I think that is so. I have a birth date of about 1812 for James C. His wife I have as Eliza Jane Dawson. I have same info on James W. Vandever and his wife as an Arnold. The Buncome county stuff came from the Book, Cumberland County's first Hundred Years, But based on some census data I found I believe this is wrong. The census data indicates that James W. was born in Pennsylvania. I have not been able to track him. For George A., I have birthdate of 8 Feb 1841, married 1864-5, Died 21 Jun 1931. Also have a remark that he is buried in Lantana Cemetery, if so I may have a picture of his gravestone. Will go looking for it.

Jim

obit of Isabel Vandever Hornaday

This article was in the Harvey Ledman's Diary and Scrapbook. I don't know what newspaper it was in, but he lived in Lafayette, Indiana. The article had a hand written date of Aug 30, 1901 on it.

Mrs. Isabelle Hornaday
The death of Mrs. Isabelle Hornaday occured at 4:00 Thursday afternoon at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. John Englert, in Battle Creek, dysentery being the cause, after an illness of but one day. Mrs. Hornaday fractured her right hip two years ago while visiting her daughter, Mrs.H.A. Wallace, after which she was brought to the home of her son, Harvey J Hornaday, this city. A week ago Sunday she was taken to the home of Mrs. John Englert. She was conscious up to the hour of her death. Mrs. Hornaday was born in Preble county, Ohio, 89 years ago next October the 10th. She was the widow of John Hornaday and of the twelve children born to her but two survive, Harvey J Hornaday and Mrs. Wallace. Her husband died at Pyrmont sixteen years ago. Mrs. Hornaday was born and reared a Dunkard and was a woman of noble character. She had many warm friends and admirers.(note-here there seems to be a printing error)The funeral will take place tomorrow; burial in Pry-friends and admirers. (note-the article appears to continue correctly)The funeral services were held Saturday morning at 8 o'clock in Pyrmont, a Dunkard minister officiating.(End of obituary)

Note- Isabel Vandever Hornaday was Harvey Ledman's maternal grandmother.
Re: Vandever Family

I have worked on the Vandeveer history for many years. Mine goes back to Capt. Jacob Jacobsen Vandeveer (1630-1698) who married Katherine Brassert. Their children are Helena, Judith, Elizabeth, William David, Hendrich, Cornelious, Jacob Jr, and John. I have a snag in my history with regards to a John Vandeveer, Sr. who married Mary Justis. I find a record of their marriage, but nothing more. It is at this point that one source takes the line another direction and never gets back to the original Jacob. Records have not survived to verify John's ancestry, so I am stuck. A Goldie Shaffer worked years on this history and could not solve the problem. Her work can be found in the LDS Family Search, but it contains a lot of errors. Other sources are The Vandeveers of NC, KY & IN by Mabel Van Dyke Baer and 1693 Census of the Swedes by Peter Craig and A Calendar of Delaware Wills, New Castle C. DE. The one source that I disagree with is The Vanderfords: Early Settlers of America by Cheryl Lynds Jensen. There are a lot of published sources, but none can solve my problem. I hope you get this message and I would like to hear back from you or anyone else about the Vandeveers.

As far as I know they lived in Arizona with their 7 children..my father being the youngest...Ronald..but the family is from Oklahoma. I know quite a bit about the family history back to before we came here from Europe..but my grandmother did full research of the family history and my aunt is making it into a book. If you want more info contact me at my email address.

Vandeveer's of NJ, OH, KS, OK

I am doing research on my grandmother's family, as she was a Vandeveer born in Oklahoma 1922 to Alonzo (Lon) and Nancy Day Vandeveer. Alonzo was born in Barton Co. Ks 1882 to Abraham (Abram)[b.1856 Ohio d. 1893 Kansas] and Sinai Huitt [b. 1861/2 d. 1885/6?]. He has two brothers, William Henry b. 1879 and John b. 1884?. Abraham's father and mother were, William Dominicus Vandeveer b. 1811 in New Jersey d. 1878 Barton Co. Ks and Cynthia Howell b. 1820 Ohio d. 1878 Barton Co. Ks. I can seem to go no further back. I have found the family in Ohio before the move to Kansas, but can't seem to find William Dominicus' parentage. I have heard rumors that William D. moved a settlement of Germans to Kansas, but can find no supporting documentation to this. Also, it has been passed down that Sinai committed suicide, but again can find no documentation. Abraham was also reported as killed in a tractor accident, but I have conflicting information that it was a railroad accident. If anyone has any information pertaining to these Vandeveers, it would be greatly appreciated, as my grandmother is now 87 and knows so very little about her family...I would love to find her family for her!

Gayle, I do have Rebecca listed as child of Arnold and Sadie Cooper b 4 Jan 1822 White Co Tn. I received information from Janet Neal that Rebecca married Britton Burrell Baucom in 1838 and had 2 children, but I do not have their names. I lost some of my e-mail due to computer crash and I can't remember what the connection was based on. Her oldest James Cooper Vandiver is one clue to the connection, and according to another descendant of this line, a Mrs Myers cared for the children after the death of their parents. Arnold was killed in accident and his wife died a few weeks later. My e-mail is barton@eatel.net, if you do not put you e-mail address in the message, I have not found a way to locate an individual's e-mail address on this board.

Elijah or Elihu Vandever

Hi, Which are you looking for
Elijah N Vandever b 20 Mar 1820 d 1866 m Alsey England he died on the way to Tx, or Elihu Vandever b 5 Feb 1818 d. bet. 1891/1896 m Thurza Elizabeth Berry moved to Oregon Co Mo? Both born in White Co Tn. If you check the 1820 Census for White Co Tn you will only find either John or Arnold Vandever/Vandiver listed. Arnold died in accident ca 1826/1827 and John died Apr 1829 leaving a Will.

I do not believe you are going to find any James Vandever b 1700 or Sarah Arnold b 1700 as the parents of a Elijah b 1818, this would make their age 118 years old for both of them. Now you may find a James Vandever and wife Arnold as the parents of John and Arnold Vandiver located in White Co Tn 1820 Census, but I still do not believe they were born in NC, nor would they be as old as you place them. One of Arnold Vandever ( d.1826/1827) 's sons reported his father being born in Pa in the 1880 Census. I do believe they came from NC before moving into Tn.

Reed. - married 23 years.

From family information, I believe that Washington's wife was Annie Reed Weeks, widow of Christian Weeks. I believe she also had three sons.
1. Houston Groff
2. Orlando Groff
3. Allen Groff.

I have been unable to rconcile the relationships of the disparate last names. what is frustrating is that I even have photographs of Orlando and Houston Groff ( so I know they existed), but have been unable to find them in any historical records.
