I have Marcus Franklin Vandiver (1852-1896) married to Rachel Lee Davidson (1853-1925) both died Talluhal Falls Ga.

Under another line I noted James C Lee (1820-1907) who lived Long Creek, Oconee Co SC married Nancy H. Phillips (1824-1907) who had daughter Rachel E. b 1853 per Census records, age 7- 1860, listed age 14- 1870 (but Census show writting messed up and could have been 16).

I do not know if these are the indiviuals you are looking for. There were Gasoway families listed in Census records near the Lee family.
Cornelia V Barton

An additional note of general interest - Coy's second cousin once removed was Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd. Charles was descended from Reverend Matthew W. Vandivere's youngest daughter Desdemonia Helena who married Abraham Blair Echols. I have that lineage if anyone is interested.

I can add a couple minor details here:

Coy Sr.'s full name was Anna Bell Wilson, she was born in Weatherford, TX.

The surname was often recorded incorrectly by clerks, etc., but the correct spelling used by descendants of George Alphonso is Vandiver. This is documented in his family bible currently in the possession of cousin Joel Haden Vandiver of Johnson Co., TX as well as existing letters, photos, etc. in the hands of various cousins.

For general purposes - the immigrant ancestor of this family was Michael Paulszen van der Voort who arrived in New Amsterdam around 1640. He removed with his family to Maryland in 1661. His sons who remained in Maryland adopted the spelling Vanderford, while his son that returned to New York kept the spelling of Vandervoort.

Michael's great grandson George Vanderford (Jr.) (c. 1725-1764) was the first of his family to change the name to Vandiveer. His son Edward (1753-1837) is found as Vandiveer in Maryland and Virginia records, then as Vandiver in South Carolina. Edward's younger brother spelt his name as (Reverend) George Vandever in all existing records. His descendants are found as Vandever, Vandiver, Vandivere and Van Diviere. This last spelling is unique to a single line of that branch of the family.

Of Edward's 12 sons that reached maturity, 10 adopted the spelling Vandiver, while 2 used Vandivere. The Reverend Matthew W. Vandivere (1788-1858) was his fifth son and George Alphonso's great grandfather. George was actually the first of our line to drop the final "e". His brothers eventually followed suit, except for Oceanus.

I have a photo with Alfred Matthew Vandivere, George Alphonso Vandiver and Coy Carter Vandiver taken around 1920. I can e-mail this three generation photo to you if you like.

Thanks. I have enought to satisfy memorial criteria but if family members are interested they might wish to attend the Texas or National memorials in 2011.

COY CARTER VANDIVER, SR.
OFFICER
MEXIA POLICE DEPARTMENT
DOD: MONDAY, APRIL 3, 1922

Summary:

On Monday, April 3, 1922, Officers Bosley and Vandiver were attempting to subdue a drunken suspect on the Tehuacana Highway in the west part of the city. Accounts vary slightly. One account said the prisoner refused to throw up his hands and Officer Vandiver struck the suspect on the head with the butt of his single action revolver. Another account said the revolver caught in his coat and discharged. The revolver discharged and the bullet struck Officer Vandiver and severed an artery. The bullet entered his right side about three inches below his right breast and passed through his liver. He was transported to Mexia General Hospital where he died at 7:10 p.m. The newspaper reported that Vandiver had been an officer for only a few days.

The local newspaper stated that “Vandivere [sp] and Bosley, in the regular and fearless discharge of their duties…” It was reported his nickname was “Shorty.”

Personal Information:

Vandiver was born on February 13, 1892 to George A. Vandiver and Eudora Victoria Clingan Vandiver of Waco. He was survived by his wife, Anna B. Vandiver and children Pansy Neill (born September 26, 1918) and Coy Carter Jr. (born December 2, 1920). Burial was in Section E, Lot 152, Space 10 of the Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, McLennan County. His grave has no marker or tombstone. Coy C. Vandiver, Jr. was killed in action in the U.S. Navy during WWII at age 23.

Anna married Clarence Oby Bell on May 6, 1926. They apparently had no children. Anna died November 26, 1983 in Fort Worth, Tarrant, Texas.

There are a number of spellings of the last name; however the correct spelling is Vandiver. The Texas Death Certificate is handwritten and difficult to read. Family Search identifies it as “Vanderire” and Texas Death Record Index identifies it as “Vandevire.” The 1920 US census identifies the last name as “Vandivier.” The newspapers have several different spellings.

Sources:

•	Texas Death Certificate No. 12110 – C.C.
Coy Jr. died unmarried. Coy Sr. had a daughter named Pansy Neil Vandiver. She married Clifford Cunningham. I do not have a list of children for them, but then I do not maintain data on living family members.

Coy Sr. had 4 sisters and a brother. His brother Matthew Leroy Vandiver was my great grandfather. I will send an e-mail to my Great Uncle and let him know what you are looking for, he would be able to help more than I can.

James H Vandiver had only 1 wife as far as I know, Catherine L Brock. It is George C Vandiver who had 4 wives and was the father of Garrett and grandfather to Hoyt.
I suspect that little interest has been expressed as to Garrett and Hoyt, if their decendants were not interested in genealogy. It is when a descendant tries to find information on their line that an interest is express, plus many (I for one) try not to report on living individuals.

Since you did not put any dates or locations with you granfather's given names, I presume you are speaking of: Garrett J. (1886-1970) Ga
George C.(1845-1927) SC > Ga
James H. (1815-1873) SC > Ga
Hollingsworth (c1774-1836/37) NC > Ga > SC
Hollingsworth (1730-1820) Md > Del > NC > Ga > SC
George Vandevour (d 1759 Kent Co Del) Md >Del

Beyond this point the lineage has not been proven. Note prior to the Revolution that area that was claimed by both Maryland and Pa is referred to as Delaware but records for this area could be located in either state. You left off one of the Hollinsworth Vandiver.
If you have any specific questions I will be glad to try and answer.
Cornelia V Barton
coneliabarton@bellsouth.net
I have been researching the Vandiver family for many years, but do not have extensive information of the Van de Veer family who originated in the Netherlands in about 1250. If you have any data on the early Vandivers that you would share please contact me at eggs123@att.net

Herb
