I thought I would post what I have on this man. Would love to connect with others who are willing to share information.
JOHN
VANDIKE was born before 1765 and died 1820. Ken Kirchhevel has that John was a brother to Henry and Anthony
Van Dyke. This is the ONLY reference to these brothers that I have seen. Is it an error or a true clue? The spelling of the last name varies in at least the following ways:
VANDIKE, Vandikes,
VanDyke, VanDykes,
Van Dike,
Van Dyke. Sometimes it changes spelling in the same document.
John
VanDyke first appears on
Russell County records in 1785 when signing a petition to form
Tazewell County. He appears on personal property tax lists in 1787 paying taxes on 200 acres of land. In 1790 he paid taxes on this 200 acres of land plus 76 acres he had obtained as an assignee of "
Gravat". He continued to pay tax on these acreages through 1799. He is listed in the Upper District of
Russell Co., Va., in the 1793, 1794, and 1795 Personal Property Tax List [Will
Webb, Commissioner for 1795]. He was still on the
Russell County tax list in 1802 but did not pay there. He paid taxes in
Tazewell County from 1802 through 1810; 2 John Vandikes (father & son?) paid taxes from 1811-1820.

David
Burke [family researcher] says that it is believed that these two patents (the one in 1793 and the one in 1799) are for the same tract of land. I don’t understand this.
John married CHARLOTTE
MILLER (also seen as
Charity). Charity's last name and her other names of Charlotte and Charlottie are from David
Burke [family researcher]. Prior to him, we thought that
Charity and Charlotte were two different women. I’m still not convinced that there is only one John and one wife.
In 1799,
Tazewell County was formed from Russell and on 27 Dec. 1808, three deeds were recorded from John
VANDIKE and Charlotte his wife to his sons, James, John Jr., and Charles
VANDIKE for 69 acres each. In 1819, he deeded 69 acres of land to his son, Israel.
