Hi, Roy and Karol. Good to hear from you. I have relatives named Roy and wife, Carol Van Horn who live in Benson, UT. And relatives named Les and wife, Ruth Van Horn who live in Ft. Collins, CO. I have a Jean Van Horn widow of Ernest (Junior) Van Horn living in Concord, Ca. Do any of these relatives sound familiar to you? We are all related to the Frank Pickens Van Horn and Della Mae Jenkins Van Horn family line. There is a brother named Tom Van Horn who has passed but his children are slowly finding us. Are you by chance related to Tom Van horn, brother of Frank Van Horn? I understand that Tom has two daughters and two sons.

I am hopeful that you'll get in touch with me if you think we are related. Or just to compare notes. The split in the Van Horn family history is making research for all of us tough.

My phone number is 918-398-7780 and you are welcome to call. My name is Cassandra Thomas Martin and I am Melba Van Horn's daughter from Frank and Della.

Re: Nancy Van Horn and Christopher Zacharias-1785 to 1830 or later

Hi. My name is John Higgins Van Horn and Nancy Young was a distant grandmother of mine. She married Benjamin and they had several children including Nancy Van Horn, whom according to the Van Horn Family History, by Francis S. Marvin, was born on February 6, 1793 and married Christopher Zacharias on December 24, 1813. They had four children, according to the already referenced Van Horn Family History. The four children were Michael , George, Samuel and Daniel. I think you identified Michael Zacharias as your second great-grandfather. His birthday according to this book was July 2,1814 and he married Hannah Werkheiser on April 8, 1833. Michael and Hannah are listed as having ten children; including, Valentine, Elizabeth, Catherine, William, Michael H., Emanuel, Hannah, Emeline, Alfred, and Joshua. This Van Horn Family History lists some of these ten individuals information. Please let me know if you would like me to add anything about these people. Unfortunately, nothing is listed about the parents of Christopher Zacharias. Hope this helps!

John Higgins Van Horn
jhvanhorn@gmail.com

Any help would be greatly welcomed.

Nancy and Christopher are my great, great, great grandparents.I am looking for anyone who may have any information on them. I was told that Nancy's parents were Benjamin Van Horn and Nancy Young, but can not find any documentation, ie, census records or public records. I don't know who Christopher Zacharias parents were. I believe that they may have live in Pa possibly in the Luzerne, Monroe or Bucks Counties.

My great, great grandfather was Michael Zacharis s/o Christopher and Nancy-B-1814, M-Hannah Harriet Werkheiser. He had 3 brothers that I know of, George, Samuel and Daniel. I do not have any other information on the brothers and very little on Micheal. My great grandfather was Joshua Zacharias-B-1855(PA) who married Mary Alice Woodling. My grandfather was Archie Zacharias B-1884(PA) and married Nora Margaret Irwin or Erwin. I find Archie and Joshua in PA census. My father, Merle, was also born in PA 1908.

VanHorne yDNA Project Summer Sale

If you have been considering a yDNA project as a way of finding your VanHorn or VanHorne ancestors, now is the time, because the cost of the test has been reduced in an end-of-summer sale.

Please write me at msvnhrn@jps.net for the details of registering and the cost of the test.

We are specifically looking for descendants in the male line of Jan Cornelissen, we have not been able to establish that genetic pedigree, as yet. The descendants of Christian Barentsen would appreciate it if some of their male cousins would agree to be tested. For Matthys Cornelissen we would specifically like to see male descendants of his son, Cornelius, join the project.

Please let me hear from you, the sale ends 31 August.

Marleen Van Horne
Van Horne yDNA Project

Van Horne yDNA Project---November 2007

The Van Horne yDNA Project is two years old. There are fifteen members, fourteen of whom have been tested.

Three members of the project descend from Christian Barentsen. This family is in the R1b1 haplogroup, which is common in Western Europe.

Seven member of the project descend from Matthys Cornelissen. This family is in the I1a-AS12 haplogroup, which is localized in Scandinavia and around the Baltic and North Seas. At this time there appears to be a sufficient genetic difference between the descendant of Matthys’s two sons, that it is possible to determine which son, a man descends from. if he has an incomplete pedigree.

There are three other male members of the project who do not match either of the two identified lines of descent. One man is in the process of being tested and one project member is female.

So far, no male who descends from Jan Cornelissen has joined the project. We are hoping to find descendants in the male line from Cornelis Jansen and Joris Jansen, who would be willing to join the project and be tested

The three descendants from Christian Barentsen have circumstantial evidence that he is their immigrant ancestor, however, each has a gap between their earliest known ancestor and Christian Barentsen.

Of the seven descendants of Matthys Cornelissen, three descend from his older son, Cornelius and four descend from the younger son, Abraham. This is confirmed by both the test results, and the conventional pedigrees of these project members. Cornelius Van Horen, the older son, had seven sons, Thomas, Matthew, Cornelius, Abraham, James, John and Daniel. The three descendants of Cornelius all descend from his son, Abraham. We would very much like to have descendants of Cornelius’s other sons, participate in the project.

Of the four men who descend from Matthys Cornelissen by way of his son, Abraham Van Horn, one descends from his son, Matthew; two from Cornelius and one from Abraham. The genetic information in this case is correcting a mistake made in the 1958 genealogy, Our Van Horne Kindred, by Elsie O. Hallenbeck. She connected the Matthew Van Horn who married Eleanor Crumm to Abraham’s brother, Cornelius. The yDNA test results, are, however, confirming that the Matthew who married Eleanor, or Nelly, was in fact the son of Abraham.

Once again, Family Tree DNA has made gift certificates available for the holidays. They are available on a first come first server basis to new participants in the Van Horne yDNA Project. If you are interested in joining, please write to me at: msvnhrn@jps.net.

Disclaimer: As the manager of the Van Horne yDNA Project, I receive not compensation or other benefits from Family Tree DNA, the testing company. The time I spend analyzing test results and helping project members with their research is freely volunteered, by me.

Marleen Van Horne
Van Horne yDNA Project Manager
Bonnie, I was just reading a message you posted and saw that you had mentioned having Van Horn ancestors in New Jersey. My Van Horns were from the Trenton area and I'd love to know more about them, particularly my 5g grandfather, Jesse Van Horn. I have no info on him and would like to find out when the Van Horns came to America. Thanks, Allison

Emaline (Emma, Emily, "Annie") Vanhorn, b. 21 Jan 1851

I have recently linked my gggrandmother Emily J. Vanhorn Harris to father Isaac Vanhorn, b. 11 Jan 1812, Mullinville, Butler Co., Ohio. I have his wife as Ruth Baker, b. 19 Sep 1811 in New Jersey. I came across another document that said her maiden name was Stevans and that she was born in Ohio. They were married 13 Nov 1831 in Warren Co., Ohio. Isaac died in St. Elmo, Illinois in 1891 and Ruth died in Halstead, KS in 1888. They moved to Indiana in 1844, to Illinois in 1859 and to Kansas in 1874. Emily J. Vanhorn married David Taylor Harris in Halstead, Kansas on 26 Jan 1875. They moved back to Illinois. He was a Methodist preacher. Question: Can anyone help me with the ancestry of Isaac and Ruth Vanhorn? Their other children were named Nathan C., Amanda J., Thomas B., Sarah E., Rebecka A., William H., Vanburen and Mira Virginia. Any help will be mightily appreciated.

Re: Vanhorns in Delaware

Sue - I have hit the same brick wall - this is as far back as I can get with my Van Horn ancestors (this is my mother's maiden name). Let me know if we are connected.

I have some question about whether I have the correct husband for "my" Rachel. Here's a summary of my research -

1. JOHN1 VAN HORN was born Aft. 1799, and died Bef. 1850 in Delaware. He married RACHAEL. She was born Abt. 1801 in Delaware.

More About JOHN VAN HORN:
Census: 1840, DE, New Castle Co, Appoquinimink Hundred

Notes for RACHAEL:
Possible marriage:

Maryland Marriages, 1667-1899 Record
about RACHEL TIMMONS
Name: SAMUEL VANHORNE
Spouse: RACHEL TIMMONS
Marriage Date: 24 Mar 1825
County: Harford
State: MD

Rachel Van Horn's first child was born in 1826 - timing is right for this marriage. Currently have name of husband as John Van Horn - need to research Samuel Van Horne.

Harford County was formed in 1773 from Baltimore County. The records from the county in this database cover the years 1777 through 1850.

Original data: Harford County, Maryland Marriages, 1777-1850. County court records located at Bel Air, Maryland or Family History Library microfilm #0014116.

HOWEVER - 1840 DE Census has a John Van Horn in Appoquinimink Hundred. Household consists of:
One female age 30-40 (right age for Rachael in 1840 - 39 yrs old)
One male age 30-40 (John born in 1799)
One male age 11-15 - right age for Isaac, born about 1826 (14 yrs old)
One male under age 5 - right age for Jacob, born about 1836 (4 yrs old)

More About RACHAEL:
Census 1: 1850, Appoquinimink Hundred, NC Co DE
Census 2: 1880, living in household of Henry W.
I am looking for Vanhorns that came to MI from OH before OH New York.. Ben was the first I found in MI. He lived in Swan Creek. His son James married Lenora Henderson. Three of their children Henry b. 1849 was in Isabella County & Saginaw. He married Amanda Neil. Henrietta b. 1849 (twin to Henry) married A.w. Barnes. My grandmother Sarah b.1853 married William A. Sanford. I found Sarah's son Wm. H. Sanford in Saginaw Co in 1880 with Wm.

Hi Jessica,

I would be happy to help you get started but I'll need a little more info.

Where was your grandmother born? I wasn't able to find a Dorothy VanHorn born 1915 in Ohio but there were a couple from other states.

Also, it would be very helpful to know the names of her parents and where they were born.

The best place to start your family history research is with your living family members. If your grandmother is capable of answering some questions, you might want to ask her what she can tell you about her parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. See if she has any old photos and make sure they are labeled with names and dates. Perhaps she has an old Family Bible or newspaper clippings that might contain vital information.

Don't forget to write everything down, including your sources. You'll be so happy you did!

This looks like my VanHorns. I have not been able to find a marriage record for John and Rachel or any kind of birth/christening info. I do have a death certificate for son Levi her maiden name is given as Harris. The children were Isaac, Jacob, Catherine, and Levi. Jacob was my gr gr grandfather. I found a note in some records from the Old Union ME Church in Blackbird, DE that mentions the death of John VanHorn on March 27, 1850. He was the church sexton. If they are buried here there are no markers. I have not been able to locate any church records for that time period, but Isaac and Jacob are both buried here with markers. In 1870 she lived with Hansen Harris and his family in Appoquinimink Hd. Could not find her in 1860. It seems this part of the family did not leave much of a paper trail.
