Ronald Leroy VanMeter, the son of Coy Raymond and Helen May (Stroup) VanMeter was born on January 29, 1938 at St. Edward, NE. He was baptized into the Methodist faith. Ron attended school at Boone County School District #26, and Albion High School.
Following high school Ron enlisted in the United States Air Force on May 31, 1955. He was stationed at Bitburg Air Force Base in Bitburg, Germany. On September 18, 1957 Ron was united in marriage to Mathilde Lenerz at Bitburg. Following his honorable discharge on November 17, 1958, he and his wife moved back to St. Edward, Nebraska. In 1959 Ron started working for Werner Service and Trucking as a truck driver and later a mechanic until 1992. He then began his own business, Ron’s Repair. Later he expanded Ron’s Repair into V-M Trucking and Repair, Inc. Ron also drove the school bus for a number of years. Throughout the years Ron enjoyed driving his stock car, #14, at numerous tracks around Nebraska. He enjoyed landscaping, gardening, and always had beautiful looking flower beds and scenery in his yard. Ron enjoyed spending time with all of his grandchildren and great-grandchild. He made sure that there were always cookies in the cookie jar for them.
On Friday, February 03, 2006 Ron passed away due to complications with cancer and pneumonia at the Boone County Health Center in Albion, at 68 years of age. Ron will be greatly missed and always remembered by his family and friends.
Ron is survived by his wife Mathilde VanMeter of St. Edward; 5 children: Ralph and wife Sabine of Floersheim, Germany; Joe, Dennis and wife Kim, and Mike all of St. Edward; Tammy Iburg and husband Gary of Belgrade, NE; 1 sister Donna Donscheski of Las Vegas, NV; 1 brother Darrell and wife Connie of O’Neill, NE; brother-in-law Kenneth Kinzie of Wilbur, NE; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; along with many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and 1 sister Mildred Kinzie.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 6, 2006 at the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church in St. Edward with Rev. Katherine Bullard officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery with military rights conducted by Crosier American Legion Post 226. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward.
