One often sees Mary Barnes listed as the wife of Edward Vann, sr. of
North Carolina. The will of Richard and Mary Barnes is provided as
evidence, as Mary the wife of Edward Vann is named. However, this Mary
is the granddaughter of Richard and Mary Barnes. As the will states
"The estate of Mary BARNES to be divided between "the said Thomas
BARNS, Andrew MAMILTON, Joseph BRADDY, Prudence BARNES, Edward VANN
who married Mary the daughter of Mary BARNES..." Let's refer to
them as Mary1, Mary2 and Mary3. Mary1 is Mary Barnes. Mary2 was born
Mary Barnes and referred to that way in the will, but having been
married more than likely bears another name. Mary3 would bear the name
of Mary2's husband. Probably.
Heck, it could be Mary the daughter of Squirrel King, and this Edward
might be Edward "Ned" Vann of Edgefield, SC, for that matter. At any
rate it's unlikely to have been Mary Barnes.
