I would love to have a copy of the picture mentioned.

These two ladies are my great aunts.

My mother, Grace Iris Caudry, was a grand child of Belle, who claimed these two ladies as sisters.

I understand there were 17 children in all. I was told they either died very young OR lived very long.

send to 502 Seasons Parkway, Belvidere, IL 61008

(Panata ) Vannatta, Dinsmore in RichHill TWP, Greene Co., PA

In my search for Vannatta references, I have come across the following mis-spelling which I believe may help someone in their work. ( Panata ).

1) ref 1850 census Richhill TWP Greene Co. PA dwelling #291
This family, John Vanatta and wife Nancy have a son Phillip (4 yrs).
2) ref 1850 census Richhill TWP Greene Co. PA dwelling #269
This family, Thomas Dinsmore and wife Mary Gray lists Lydia Vanatta (9yrs) as a resident.

3) ref. 1860 census Richhill TWP, Greene Co. PA, dwelling #128 .
The census record for Thomas Dinsmore family has Lydia Vanatta (19 yrs) and Phillip Vanatta(14yrs) as residents.

Thomas Dinsmore and wife Mary Gray, a descendant of Robert Dinsmore and Mary Scott are mentioned in another document of interest.

The historical reference 'Genealogical and Personal Memorial of Mercer County, New Jersey' page 755, is recounting the Dinsmore family line. Members of this Dinsmore line are found in Pennsylvania. It references, --- Nancy, Mrs. John Panata, now Mrs. Millikin) ---.

Evidently John's wife remarried a Mr. Millikin. There are several Millikin households in Richhill TWP in 1860's.

This document is available on Google Books. A search for any combination of these names will bring up this book and its pages in either text or image.
There is a Daniel Venada in the 1880 Federal Census, Haines Twp., Centre Co., PA. He is 56, and listed as a laborer. His wife is Sarah, and his children are Lotte M., (age 3), Gerde M., (age 2), and Florence (age 1). Could this be your Daniel? There is a totally searchable 1880 census data base at familysearch.org -- you might want to take a peek at that and see if there are any clues there.

Beth

Kelly, have you found the names of Peter Vanatta and Rebecca Starrett? Would one of them been Rebecca? My ancestor, Azariah Garrison married a Rebecca Phanatta (I'm thinking misspelling) about in Smith County, TN. They moved to Wayne County, MO, which is very close to St. Francois, CO., MO. I have my Rebecca born in 1813 in TN and married in 1830 in Smith Cty. TN. My Azariah was born about 1790 in Rockingham County, NC., and probably had a first wife more his age.

John and Mary Ann Reed Vannatta of OH, then IL

Parents of Josephine Vannatta, John and Mary Ann Reed Vannatta were married in Allen Co., OH in 1852 where Josephine was born. The remainder of Josephine's siblings were born in Vermilion Co., IL where John and Mary Ann died. I am looking for information on John's (and Mary Ann's) ancestry. I believe the Samuel and Rebecca listed in the 1850 Allen Co., OH census with a 24 year old John and brothers Barney and Evanston are the right parents for him as John's age is correct as is his birth place. John also named one of his sons Barnett who went by Barney most of his life, also had a daughter named Rebecca. Any information to help prove this would be great. I'm having trouble finding Samuel and Rebecca on an 1840 census and believe the 1840 Samuel in the Licking Co. census is NOT him because of other information I've found in Licking Co.

Just curious, have you seen Peter Vannatta's listing on the 1800 census of Lincoln Co., N.C.? If you have access to Ancestry.com's Census images you can go to 1800 Lincoln Co., N.C. and he and Wm. Starrett are both recorded on the 11th page of images.

This 1800 census listing for him leads me to do a 180 again and now I agree with you that Peter's marriage to Rebecca Starrett was his second marriage. This is the first time I had seen this census record, but it clearly shows he was over the age of 45 in 1800, whereas his wife (Rebecca) was recorded as 26-45 years of age. Also, they were married only 7 years before this 1800 census was conducted, yet they were recorded with two boys who were 10-16 years of age, and one boy who was 16-26 years of age, and one girl who was 10-16 years of age and 2 girls who were 16-26 years of age; as well as 3 girls who were under the age of 10. The latter three girls were apparently children of Rebecca.

A "Wm. Steret" was recorded as living three homes away from "Peter Vanata" and he was also over the age of 45 in 1800.

Dorothy was born in Carroll, County, Indiana. I believe that Johns family was originally from Illinois. I don't have much information to go on. Anything would be great.
Traci
travic@centurytel.net
Nancy, do you believe that Samuel's son, Jahue, married Dorcas Sandlin? (Is it Dorcas or Darcus?) If so brother/sister married brother/sister. I have, so far, been unable to find Jahue in the 1850 DeKalb Co., census, but I understand from other researchers that he is there. Looks like you are my husband, Jerry's, fourth cousin. I would be very interested in any info you have from Samuel on down (back as well) and would be glad to share my info with you. Thanks for your response!

Kelly, I agree with you. I am not sure that Rebecca Starrett was the mother of John or Jane. My husband is descended from Samuel, we know for sure. But from there back, I have questions. His line is as follows:
Samuel Vanatta m. Hannah Glover
Jahue Vanatta m. Darcus Sandlin
Littleton Milton Vanatta m. Mary Eliz. Claiborne
Joe Ben Vanatta m. Mollie Bain
Tommy Nathan Vanatta m. Ada Louise Anderson
Jerry Vanatta (my husband) m. Belinda C. Evans

I do believe that John and Jane were siblings and that Peter was their father.

I studied in Sweden for awhile and one of the main thoroughfares in Stockholm is called Vanadis vagen...the name appears there fairly commonly and lead me to wonder of its origin in Scandanavian culture with settlers who migrated in to Germany and Switzerland. Have you ever heard of this?

There was a Nancy Vanatta who was married in Williamson Co., Tennessee in 1816 to a man named John L. Haynes. This appears to be the same John Haynes who was recorded on the 1820 census of Smith County, TN., in 1820 on page #2, as a 26 to 45 year old male with a wife of the same age and two boys who were under the age of 10.

Peter Vanatta was recorded on this same 1820 census of Smith Co., TN., on page # 4, as was a Samuel Vanatta (Samuel appears to be a son of Peter's by his first marriage).

There was also a marriage of another Vanatta girl in 1824 in Williamson Co., TN. Maria Vanatta to James Hodges. Don't know if she was related to Peter or not, but I suspect Nancy and Samuel may have been children of Peter's.

Well, Samuel Vanatta b. 1788, husband of Hannah Glover, is shown on Ancesry.com as the son of Peter Van Etten, and his wife Ruth (M.N.U.). Are we to assume then that Peter Van Etten b. 1749 d. 1821 is the same Peter Vannatta or Vanatta who was married to Rebecca Starrett in 1793 in Lincoln Co., N.C.? And that he died in Smith Co., TN. in 1826 rather than 1821 as shown here?

According to this information on Ancestry.com, Peter Van Etten was the son of Petrus Samuel Van Etten b. 13 OCT 1719 in Sommerset County, NJ., and he died 22 FEB 1790 in Oxford Twsp., Warren Cty., NJ. He was the son of Emmanuel Van Etten and his wife Antje Annette De Hooges.

According to this information on Ancestry.com Peter Van Etten had children named Samuel Vanatta b. 1788 d. 1850 m. Hannah Glover; Peter Vanatta b. 1776; Christopher Columbus Vanatta b. 1776; Elizabeth Vanatta b. 1788; Margaret Vanatta and Mary Vanatta. Is any of this accurate?

Re: SAMUEL VANNATTA of North Carolina and De Kalb County, TN.

I sent a private e-mail to you about this, but I have not heard back from you of late. I appreciate the attempt to help here, but I do not see how my Jane Vannatta (or Vanatta) could have been a sister to your Margaret (daughter of Samuel).

Samuel was born in North Carolina in 1788, according to the 1850 census of De Kalb Co., TN. And Jane was born in 1798 in North Carolina, according to that same 1850 census and the 1860 census of St. Francois Co., MO. (Liberty twp.).

From what I've been given to understand, from others, my Jane Vanatta, b. 1798 in Lincoln Co., N.C., was the daughter of Peter Vanatta b. 1749 in New Jersey or New York d. 1826 in Smith County, TN., and Peter's second wife, Rebecca Starrett. Peter's first wife is believed to have been named Ruth (M.N.U.) and they were married sometime prior to 1775. By her Peter had children named Samuel Vanatta (your Samuel) b. 1788, Jacob Vanatta, Christopher Columbus Vanatta, Elizabeth Vanatta, Mary Vanatta, Margaret Vanatta, and Peter Vanatta (no further record of him).

By his second wife, Rebecca Starrett, Peter Vanatta had at least three girls, one of whom was Jane Vanatta b. 1798. Peter Vanatta and Rebecca Starrett were married in 1793 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, on July 31st.

So, according to what I've been told, my Jane and your Samuel were half-brother and half-sister to one another. Both were children of Peter Vanatta, but Samuel was a son of Peter's first wife, and Jane was a daughter of his second wife. At least that is my understanding of all this. If I'm wrong I would hope someone would correct me with the facts which prove this account to be incorrect.

What would also help would be someone who can tell me who Peter's parents were. And someone who can answer the question of how he came to be in Lincoln Co., N.C., prior to 1790.

Mary Youst / Yost must be somebody's daughter .....
I'm sorry I don't have any direct info for your line, but I have a suggestion about your census problem.

Recently, I discovered a missing relative on a census record that was indexed incorrectly. If the census records you are searching are indexed and allow you to search generically, try searching for "Samuel" , his age in 1840, and the state where he may have lived. You'll likely get quite a few names, but you may find that the last name has been interpreted wrong when it was typed for the index online. That is how I found my missing relative with the last name of Palmer who was incorrectly indexed as Bloom. Go figure. We're only human. Accidents happen, which makes it all the more interesting to search for them .... and more rewarding when we find them!! :)

Good luck!
k taylor

Smith Co Court Records Sept 11, 1811 have a motion for a Letter of Attorney for Peter Vannatta. Named are Jacob Vannatti, Christopher Vannatta, Elizabeth Vannatti, Mary Vannatta, Christopher Vanatta, Elizabeth Vanatta, Margaret Vannatti, Peter Vanatti, Samuel Vanatta.
The different spellings are indeed curious. I have chosen to show Peter Srs, Children as Samuel, Jacob,Christopher (my ancestor) Peter, Elizabeth, Margaret and possibly Mary.
I suspect that Maria married to Hodges is Mary or Margaret. If not that would give Peter 4 boys 4 girls.
Nancy Vannatta, that married Haynes was the widow of Christopher C. who died 1812-1813 of illness contracted in the War. I have never found the younger Peter Vanatta, or verified a Jacob. They may have died during War 1812.Samuel I believe married Hannah Glover and lived in deKalb Co. Tn.Goodspeeds History, Bedford Co, for James VanNatta states Christopher was his Father and was from NC

I too am descended from Samuel Vannatta & Hannah Glover through their daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Vannatta who married Fuller Sandlin. Fuller was a brother to Dorcus.

Fuller & Peggy (Vannatta) Sandlin's daughter, Sarah C. Sandlin was my ggm and married James Wesley Crook.
