Mary's name was Mary Catherine because in one of the Census she is listed as Catherine and one listed as Mary with same husband and children...Edward Chancellor Vanness and Ida May Vanness.

I believe Ida married a guy by the last name of Mason and Edward married Eliza Susan Nicholson my 2nd great grandparents.

Some list the last name as being van Ess and I believe this to be wrong, however I do think that it was VanNest before William, either one or two generations before him. I have the people but trying to make sure correct before adding to my tree.

Thanks
Tammy

Another tidbit, my father said my grandmother definitely reported to S.S. and was collecting. And he also said that people used to call my grandfather "Bill"... even though his name on my dad's birth certificate is listed as Charles Henry Van Ness.

It is very confusing. I spoke to the cemetary, and found that the people who purchased the plot my grandfather is in, are Jacob (b 11/9/1895,d 1/28/1963) and Cora (Van Ess) Milson (b 7/23/1894, d 1/2/1972). I'm thinking Cora was my grandfather's Aunt. Also buried in plots owned by Jacob and Cora are Leonard Van Ness(b 3/15/1881, d 6/10/1959) and Jennie Townsend Van Ness (b 3/8/1884, d 3/14/1962). And on their plot, Jennie's name is listed as Jane.

The McManamey plot has four people in it: Charles (1880-1951), Ella (1886-1960), Peter C (1906-1969) and Elizabeth V. (1912-1978). That's the only information I have on them. I don't know how they are tied in, or why my grandfather is listed as living with them in 1930...

Thank you Judy. I'm still at a loss with my grandfather's history. I am unable to obtain any records of his birth, or marriage to my grandmother (if there was a marriage, which my grandmother said there was). I contacted vital records in Paterson NJ where my grandfather was born...they told me I can't obtain a birth certificate without knowing Charles' parents' names. This is impossible! The point of requesting the b.c. is to get his parents names since they are unknown at this time! Charles, my grandfather, died when my dad was 5... and then my grandmother had a fire in the house and lost everything! I have nothing on him - it's almost as if he didn't exist! I can't even find a record with the SS Death Index. All I know from the cemetery is that he was born Jan 5, 1913, and died Sept 23, 1957...he was 44 years old.

Any help or information would be appreciated. I dont know how the McManamey family ties in, but I did find them buried near my grandfather in the cemetery. So confusing!!!

I believe my grandfather's mother was Rachel Van Ess,born in NJ. Her parents were Peter and Nellie Van Ess from Holland..they too lived in Michigan and NJ. I believe Rachel was born (according to census) in 1891. I can place her in NJ in 1910... in the Passaic area. Where did she go to from there?? I can't find any records of her marrying, moving, or anything else. I know her brother Leonard was spelling their last name as Van Ness while in NJ.

Anyone have any insight as to how I can find out where Rachel went?? I believe she gave birth to my grandfather, Charles Henry VanNess in 1913.

Thanks for any help!!

I'm trying to figure out where my grandfather came from. He was born January 5, 1913 and died Sept 26, 1957. I have no information on his parents or family. I believe he may have been raised by other relatives. My grandmother mentioned the name Rachel as his possible mother. I also found a census record that places a Charles VanNess with the McManemy family... Charles McManemy b 1885 in PA married to Ella McManemy b 1886 in Michigan. And they had a son Pater McManemy b 1907 in NJ. They list my grandfather as a nephew.

Does anyone have any information or know how I can find out who his parents were? He married (so I think) my grandmother Alice Wanamaker (And I'm uncertain as to where she came from as well, but I know she was born Apr 29, 1917).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

VanNess follow-up

I do not have birth or marriage dates for William Thomas VanNess and Mary Susan
(or Mary Elizabeth) Brown VanNess. I've seen her name listed also as Betty - but on the marriage license of my grandparents, Brown VanNess (son of the above) and Bessie Lee Dudley the names of both their parents are listed. His parents are listed as W.T. and Mary VanNess. On different birth and death records for their children, I've seen her name as Mary Susan VanNess. I was also told her name was Mary Susan by my mother and her sister. Anyway, they were born in Rockbridge County (town of Lexington) Virginia. However, I do have a copy of the 1850 VA census and it shows William VanNess as 36 y.o., wife Lucinda 25, sons James as 8, William T. as 4 and John H. as 3. Then, in the 1880 census for Rockbridge Co., VA I have William Thomas VanNess as 33, wife Mary S. as 34, children Elizabeth 14, John 12, James 10, Lucinda 8, Brown 5, and Paul as 3. This matches William Thomas' age as shown the 1850 census when was 4. It's about all I have. I do not know who the parents were beyond those I have of William Thomas, nothing about Mary Susan's parents and nothing that tells me where they were before the came to VA. Do you have anything else?

Are you still looking for information on Cornelis Hendrickse Van Nes, @1600-1681? There are two interesting chapters in the "The Washington ancestry : and records of the McClain, Johnson, and forty other colonial American families" by Charles Arthur Hoppin, found on HeritageQuest (on-line thru your local library). One chapter is "The Honorable Cornelis Hendricksz Van Nes" and the other is "Pieter Claesen Van Norden and the Wyckoffs".

William G. Vanness died on the 17th inst., aged 63 years 5 months and 4 days (March of 1898) of heart trouble. Mr. Vanness was in his usual health on going to bed at night and seemingly so in the morning at about 5 o'clock when Mrs. Vanness arose to prepare breakfast and when she went to call her husband found him dead. Mr. Vanness was one of a family of fourteen children, only four of whom are now living; David, of Standing Stone, PA; Francis, of Liberty Corners, PA; E. N. of Hainesville (I believe this is Edwin N. Vanness) and Phebe of Ashton, Ill. Of his immediate family he leaves a widow and two children; Fanny, wife of G. T. Knight of Newark and Theodore, at home. The funeral took place on sunday afternoon at his late home. Interment in Hainesville Cemetery.

I believe William's wife was Anna Rupart/Rubert.

Vanness Family from Sandyston Township, Sussex County, NJ

I am researching the Vanness family from Sandyston Township, NJ. Edwin Vanness married Sallie Shay and had several children:
Mae
Nettie
Shay
Ernest
Hannah
Frank
George

I believe Edwin had a brother, William G. Vanness. Both William and Edwin are buried in the Hainesville Cemetery in Sandyston Township, NJ, as well as some of their families.
I am trying to find a descendant of the Vanness family, Jeanne Maggiore, who requested information from the Hainesville Cemetery about 13 years ago and I hope she or a friend of hers reads these posts and it will get me to her or someone in her family.

Thanks so much for reading this post!

If anyone needs anything. I will try to provide what I have that might help you. I, while have lots of info, need info on William Van Ness or Vannest who married Amanda Todd. I think they were married in 1836, April 27th. He was born June 11, 1810 in Ohio and died April 19th, 1881 in Vigo Co IN. She was born Oct. 28th, 1816 in Ohio and died April 17th 1878 in Clay Co IN. Amanda's family traces back to Gov. William Bradford of the Mayflower. They had 11 children named Thomas Jefferson, William Henry, Daniel Todd, Elizabeth, Eliza "Lyda" C., Ursula, Sarah Ella, James Edward, Marcella, Mariah, and Mary A. If anyone can help me out with Williams folks, I'd appreciate it.

What are the dates of these Van Ness'es?

I am looking for a Peter Van Ness who married Mary Ann Evans(b. abt 1814). They had a son, George Henry Clay Van Ness, b. 1839 in Florence, AL (Lauderdale Co). Peter is not with them in the 1840 or 1850 census. We haven't figured out why(died or moved on?).

Peter supposedly immigrated from Holland to NY, then to Alabama, but we have no proof.

If he could be among these siblings that moved on to Texas, then that is something to look into.

Charlie
