Chris

Thanks for the response, I am very interested in sharing information.

Yes, Lyman is my Great, Great, Great Grandfather. His death date is January 19, 1894 although some have it listed as the 18th of January. He married Lovis Curtis in 1838 and they had four children, Amanda, Sarah, Henry (George Henry) and Margaret. I am 99% sure his line goes back to January (Jans) Dirkz that came over from Arnhem, Guilderland, Netherlands. Most online genealogies record it that way. I am trying to find an online legal document (cenus, birth etc) showing that Jacob Truman & (Lydia) Van Arman are his parents. If I can get that it would finalize the matter.

Lyman & Lovisa left Canada and came to Michigan in 1857 which makes his paper trail a little harder to track down.

I am currently trying to photograph of all the headstones I can find. I was at the Evergreen and Moshier cemeteries (Sanilac County) just this past Saturday. I photographed several headstones. Some of the older markings are not readable and some of them have been replaced with new headstones.

I have many newpaper articles on the Van Normans that settled in St. Clair and Sanilac Counties.

I would prefer to correspond by phone and email if possible.

Which one of Jacob Truman's children does your line stem from?

You can call or email me at:

Email: jon94@aol.com
Phone: 810-629-0678

Thanks
Mike Van Norman

I have a transcription of a transcription for you. Maybe this is what you're looking for.
Marriages in Monroe County, Michigan, a book at Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has this entry:
Vanorman, Abram, (age)24yr R:(residence) Mln Twp.
Litchard, Alvina 19yr R:Mln Twp. Married 23 Oct 1856 in Mln. Twp. by J.P. (I didn't transcribe his name). Wit. Isaac VanOrman and Matilda VanOrman. R: Ridgeway, Lnwe. Co.
P. 85. E.2

The 1860 Milan census has an Abram Van Arman (Ancestry transcribed it VanAnnan) age 36 PA and Almira or Alvira 24 PA, Mariah 3, and Emma 1, both born MI.
2 dwellings down there's a Joseph Litchard 80 PA, probably a relative of Alvina/Almira's.

Where did you get Doane for Almira's surname? If that's for sure, then this is not the couple you're looking for. Could Melvina and Emma be the same person?

I'd like to know what you think.

Mary Sams, daughter of Henry and Abigail Sams, wed HemanVan Norman Oct. 19, 1819 in Richland Co, OH. They had children Ethen and Abigail and moved to Jennings Co, IN by 1840. Ethen wed Elizabeth Clements August 4, 1847 and then Catherine Files April 4, 1866. Abigail wed Monroe McMindes October 18, 1840. TheVan Norman's are buried in Vernon, Jennings Co, IN as Van Arnem. The McMindes families moved on to Clinton Co, IN.
Nancy was the daughter of Heman's brother Miles who died 4 Apr 1828, leaving his wife Charlotte with 10 children. In 1829 she married the widower Abraham Sams, son of Henry and Abigail, supposedly in Green Co., PA, but I have found no evidence to support that marriage place.

Have you made any progress with this inquiry? My notes show an Abram VanOrman whose wife was Almina or Almira. Abram was born in 1832 in New York to Daniel VanOrman and his first wife Maria. He probably moved west to Michigan with Daniel, Daniel's second wife Abigail, and their numerous children sometime around 1850. Abram enlisted at age 32 on the 3rd of January, 1864 at Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, died of disease at David's Island,NY Harbor on the 24th of April, 1865. Do these dates sound right to you? If so, I can give you more info as I am descended from Daniel too.

Regards,
Janis VanOrman

Hello, I am looking at the VanOrmans (etc) for a friend. I am researching Walter VanOrman, son of Daniel and Cynthia, born about 1882 in Adair County, Iowa.
Here is what I have:
Walter b. 1882 is the youngest of Daniel and Cynthia's children. The others are Harriet (1867), James (1871) Francis/Frank (1873), Mary (1875), Bertha (1877), and Wilbur (1878, d. bef. 1885).
Either Harriet or Mary may have married a Bails, because in 1900, Daniel, Cynthia and Bertha are living in Willow, Greene, Iowa, and a Grover Bails is present in the household, identified as a grandson.
Daniel and Cynthia's household is also found in the 1885 Iowa State Census, in Carroll County, Iowa. They are found in 1880 in Adair County, IA. I have not found them in 1870 yet.

In 1860, Daniel (19 years) and Sarah (50 yrs) Van Norman are living in the household of Nathan Osborn of Cedar, Washington County, IA. Their role there is unclear -- they are not identified as boarders, servants, or laborers. In 1850, Sarah is living with Samuel, Briggs, Daniel, Sarah C. and Joseph Van Norman in Jordan Twnshp, Jaspar County, Indiana. Samuel is only 15, but he is identified as "Farmer".

I would really like to find out Daniel's father's name and his mother's maiden name. I will be happy to share what I have found with you. You can email me at "smasse [at] wvi.com"

Your message is old... but perhaps you are still around.
This family is listed on 1880 census Grover, Adair Co., Iowa
Daniel VanOrman 38 farmer born in In parents born PA NY
Cynthia 33 born IA
Harriet dau 13
James son 10
Francis son 8
Mary dau 6
Bertha dau 3
Wilbur son 2
I believe this is the son of Isaac and Harriet VanNorman (surname misspelled half dozen ways over time) However when I did another search for this couple the poster stated Cynthia's maiden name was See. Their marriage date was listed as 4/30/1863. See could have been a first marriage? Some posters have Daniel as born in 1848 however this census record would put him born around 1842. Daniel shows up in Grand Marsh P.O., Adams Co. Wis. 1860 census as age 13, however he is missing from the 1850 census with his family. In 1850 the surname is misspelled as VanOmum, in 1860/1870 it is VanNorman. 1880 Isaac VanNorman has passed and Harriet's name is butchered as Vannoraian. I have more information if you are interested in the rest of the family. Leslie

Is is possible that my Ella E. VanNorman born about October 1852 and married to Morris/Maurice Barker in 1888 was a widow/divorced from a VanNorman? Looking at this angle since she was 36 at the time of the marriage. Perhaps my Morris Barker was also previously married? Does anyone have an Ella who married into their family VanNorman? Exhausted all other angles at this point... have spent 20 years looking for Ella - she was my great grandmother.
Leslie

John Vannorman

I don't have anymore info on this person. I have gone through the 1850 census for Kingwood Twsp.NJ and surrounding areas numerous times, while looking for my ancestors. I was researching Margaret Vannorman. Whenever I seen the Vannoman name I took notes hoping to make connections. Unfortunately I have not made any that would connect any of the Vannormans together other than they all lived in different homes, leading me to believe that if they were related, their parents were probably dead. I have been going through my notes and any thing that seems like it might help someone else I post. When I get back to researching again I will post anything that I might find on message boards. Sometimes I forget to post stuff on all boards, I also post info on www.genforum.com and www.usgenweb.com I sorry I can't be of more help at this time. Good luck. You might try the Hunterdon CO. Historical Soc. in Flemington, NJ,

vit

Nellie Mack, wife of John Truesdale Van Norman

My name is Mike Groshong. I am descended from John T. Van Orman's sister, Jane who married Jonathan Mack.

On the internet I found T. Wayne Harris' site that John T. Van Orman married Nellie Mack 10 Aug 1814. I am interested in the origin of that citation. Where was it located? Where did the marriage occur? I wrote Wayne and he did not have additional imformation.

I am attempting to connect Nellie with Zebulon Mack or Benjamin Mack who were my Jonathan Mack's uncles. Jonathan's parents were Gurdon Mack and Asenath Palmer.

I have an 1836 court document dividing estate of Zebulon among his heirs; he died interstate so many are listed. Among them are John T Van Orman and son, Marvin. In a 1841 document among Zebulon's heirs, a Lucy Mack, daughter of Benjamin Mack, brother of Zebulon, dec; and wife of John T Van Orman is listed. Children, James Riley and Densey Young are also listed, .

So, I am hoping someone has source-documentation about Nellie's marriage as well as any additional data. I know that John T remarried, and I am guessing here, after the birth of the third child as only they are listed among Zebulon's heirs.

The listed marriage date for Nellie Mack and John T van Orman fits nicely with suspected birthdates of three children. The issue now is Nellie and Lucy the same person or cousins or siblings and did they marry the same man?

Thank-you
Samuel Van Ormer (Van Ormer=Van (N)orman=Van Namen?)

My g-g-g-g-g-grandfather, Samuel Van Ormer, was born approximately 1763 in NJ and died at the age of 96 in Juniata co. PA. According to his obituary he had 2 (or three?) wives, 18 children and scores of grandchildren. Several thousand are no doubt descended from him by now. It was also mentioned that he was a veteran. However, none of the many researchers connected with the name "Van Ormer" haven't found anything solid about the ancestry beyond Samuel and the origin of the name. But, when looking at census data, wills, tax documents, and even headstones, the name "VanOrmer" is interchanged with Vanorman/Vannorman far too often too ignore. In Juniata co. the name is recorded occasionally as Vanorman. In the Seneca Co., NY a family had their name as "Van Ormer" which was seen interchanged with Van Orman/Van Norman. This NY family originally came from Hunterdon NJ. It is in Hunterdon that I can see my specific surname appear before 1800 in NJ. I am wary of connections being just flukes but after all of my research I feel like there is a convergence that I cannot ignore.
