Re: Looking for Vannoy relatives?

From a posting on CALDWELL/FARROW AND ALLIED FAMILIES
caldw@msn.com

"There is ... a story which has been repeated enough in the last twenty five years that Jan Vannoy's wife was Rachel Cornwall. This researcher corresponded with the lady who began that myth years ago. She proposed it only as a working hypothesis, never as fact.
"In the case of the French origin of the Vannoy family there is not a shred of evidence that they were, in fact, French. On the contrary, there is a great deal of evidence that they were Dutch in origin. Even the name Van Oy, the original form of the name, is of Dutch origin.
"When those who continue to list Rachel's surname as "Cornwall" are asked about their evidence, their proof, there is none because none exists.
"Those espousing the French theory think that the name was Vannoise, or something similar. Not so. After corresponding with genealogists both in France and in Holland, as well as members of the Vannoy family in the United States (who are not from the North Carolina branch of the family) it is very evident that the story is not true.
"Likewise, in the case of Rachel Cornwall. Certainly Jan Vannoy's wife was Rachel. There is, however, not one shred of evidence that the family was ever in England, much less France.
"There was a large French Huguenot family on Staten Island around 1600. Some of them lived very close to the Vannoys. There is certainly a strong possibility that Rachel was of French origin and that Jan Vannoy married her on Staten Island.
"The fact that they named a son Francis Vannoy gives support to this possibility. Francis is not a Dutch name but was used frequently in French families of the time.
"Because we only know what happened to Francis Vannoy, son of Jan and Rachel, further research needs to be done on his other children, researching Van OY and its variants to determine if any of them may have left descendants". Something to think about. Cheers.

New Vannoy DNA Testing Opportunity

I wanted to do two things relative to DNA and genealogy.

I want to make sure all of you know that we do have a Vannoy DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/vannoy where Vannoy men can test to see which Vannoy families they match.

Second, I want to let you know about a new autosomal DNA testing opportunity. You can see the info here on the blog:
http://the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-23andme-auto...

Roberta Estes
Vannoy Family DNA Project Administrator (volunteer)
robertajestes@att.net

Vannoy DNA Project - Need Vannoy Men

I don’t know about you folks, buy my Vannoy brick wall has been frustratingly stubborn for many years now. I started the Vannoy DNA project some years back, and it has produced some interesting evidence, but we need more people to test to be able to reconstruct this family and identify family lines by their DNA.

Here’s what we’ve learned:

The majority of the Vannoy’s tested belong to one family and we are haplogroup I2b1. That is shorthand for our deep ancestry, and what that tells us is that the majority of this haplogroup is found in Saxony in France, which goes along with our oral history that Vannoy was originally a French surname and a French family before coming to the Netherlands, England and then to New York. This doesn’t prove this legend to be true, but it certainly doesn’t detract from it either and provides us one more piece of the puzzle.

One Vannoy participant is from a different family line. Since no others have tested who match him, we don’t know if this is truly another founder line or an undocumented adoption.

Of the main family line, we have 6 who have tested and one more who has recently ordered a kit. Of those 6, 3 are known to have come from the Wilkes County group, but to date, Francis (1746-1822) is the only one of the 4 sons of John Francis Vannoy who settled there to be positively identified by his DNA through his descendant.

Two participants who both descend from Elijah Vannoy (1784 – after 1850) have tested. Using traditional genealogy tools, we have pretty much eliminated 2 of the 4 Wilkes county men as his ancestor, Nathaniel and Francis. That leaves both Andrew and Daniel as candidates. We need descendants from the Wilkes County group to test, particularly if you know which son you descend from (Nathaniel, Daniel, Andrew or Francis).

The various men who have tested do have some unique mutations. As more people test, and provide their associated genealogy, we can begin to build family lines based on these genealogies and the mutations that go along with those lines. This helps us understand how and where to place future DNA participants when they test and show line marker mutations.

If you are a Vannoy male, or related to one, please consider this as plea to test. Women can’t participate by testing, but we can find participants from our line and pay for their tests. As a reminder, the reason the man has to have the Vannoy surname is because the Y chromosome which is being tested is passed from father to son follows the path of the surname. Daughters don’t have a Y chromosome, or they would be males.

To order a kit (they begin at $99), please visit our project at www.familytreedna.com/public/vannoy. I encourage people to order the 37 or 67 marker test, but then again, I’d rather see any test than no test, and upgrading can be done later, so order what the budget allows.

If you have proven descent from one of the 4 original Wilkes County Vannoy males, there may be some scholarship funds available for DNA testing, if needed.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me directly at robertajestes@att.net.

Your Vannoy cousin,

Roberta Estes
(descended from Elijah Vannoy of Wilkes Co. NC and Claiborne County, Tn.)
THANK YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH for posting this reply. I am thrilled to hear from you, and my grandmother Captola Thompson Darnall, would have been elated to receive this news. Her mother and R B's daughter, Laura Sarepta Vannoy Hayes Thompson, always referred to herself as an orphan. Laura's mother, Nancy Farris Hampton Vannoy, died within 2.5 months of giving birth to her and Russell B left her with her aunt, Olive Farris Lee Fields. With Laura's assertation that she was an orphan, I searched the Obion Cemeteries for Russell's gravesite with no luck. I look forward to corresponding more with you, and once again THANK YOU SO VERY, VERY much. Please let me know when you are travelling to Obion County and maybe I could meet you. I do have a photo of Laura's grave at Antioch Cemetery in Hornbeak that I can email later this week, if you would like to have it.

kate,
i'm from william and amanda lynn's line. but i didn't see their son on your posting.
what i have is this:
william m. amanda lynn, and had:
george m. celia gay cochran, and had:
albert m. myrtle cochran, and had:
d. adell m. edward camden
i haven't worked as much on this line as i wish because it got too confusing with all the different spellings of the family name. the name we have is mainly VANOY, but i also have it written down as VANNOY and VAN OY

I've been doing a lot of searching for Neely family ancestors, and this is a simple outline of my lineage to Nathaniel Vannoy:
1) Nathaniel Vannoy 16 FEB 1749 in Lick Creek, Rowan Co., NC (m: Elizabeth Ann Ray)
2) …son: John Cleveland Vannoy 22 MAY 1775 in Wilkes Co., NC (m: Elizabeth Kilby)
3) ……son: Jeremiah Cleveland Vannoy b. 16 MAR 1816 in Wilkes Co., NC (m: Jane F. Moss)
4) ……….dau: Elizabeth Frances Vannoy b. 8 SEP 1844 in Pike Co. MO (m2: James Neely, )
5) …………..son: Edward Cleveland Neely b. 31 JAN 1877 in Merlin, OR (m: Fanny Jane Chamberlain)
6) ………………son: Paul Edward Neely (Paul was my grandfather.)

On my (4) James Neely side, I've gone back to the Edward Neely who married Susannah Goldsmith.

Just wonder if anyone is researching similar lineage and if you would mind offering some pointers on my brick walls... Jane F. Moss and Ruth Ann Miller (whose father was either James or Caleb Miller)?
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. The Vannoys are my Dad's Mothers Family and I am having a hard time tracing their line. My grandmother was Gertrude Queen and her mother was Mary A. Vannoy wife of Churchill Queen. Her mother was Emma V. Nall wife of John W. Vannoy. I think his father was Lorenzo Vannoy. All of whom I have been told were buried in Peace Cemetary in CJ, Mo. I was born in Neosho. My father and most of his family were all born right there in Joplin. Any help is appreciated due to my dad not knowing anybody but cousins.

I see other errors Eller made in the lineage of Nathaniel Vannoy. His son John married Elizabeth Kilby in Wilkes Co., NC and they went to Pike Co., MO around 1830. They are my third great grandparents. I decend from their son Jeremiah Cleveland Vannoy who came to OR in about 1865, twice widowed, with his 6 girls. I don't believe Joel went to MO. This Missouri line of the family has so many errors in the different trees on the internet--mostly gained from incorrect information in the Eller book. The errors were glaring even to a beginner as I began my first feeble attempts to trace my Vannoy line some years ago.

William Hamilton Eller from the Bible of Jesse Vannoy of Wilkes Co. NC born in 1781, died in 1875, and rewritten by the Rev. Mr. Eller in one of the Eller family Bibles. After describing the emigrants as French Huguenots who were driven to England, then going to Holland then back to England from when they came to America, one branch settling first in South Carolina and later on the Yadkin River in Davidson Co., NC and repeating the tradition thzt they were descended from the Cromwell family in England and from the Royal House of Hanover he transcribed the following record adding notes of his own.

Rachel Vannoy dau of John and Susannah Vannoy his wife was born April 12 1741 (Note by WHE - she married Neil Patton ancestor of the Patton family of NC.)

Andrew Vannoy son of John and Susannah Vannoy his wife was born Aug 12 1742 (Note by WHE - he was a captain in the 10th NC Reg.
Vannoy DNA Project

Hi Cousins,

The DNA testing company that our family project is using is once again offering 6 holiday gift certificates for each surname project. This is a great time to join and be tested or to give testing as a holiday gift.

I can't talk about price on this list, but there are two certificates for a yline (paternal) 25 marker test, two for a 37 marker test and two for mtdna (maternal) testing.

These are not fully paid tests, but will reduce the cost of the test by 10-15%.

Terms of the certificates are:
1) that they be used only for new members (new kits), not upgrades,
2) that they are not valid in conjunction with any other promotion, and
3) that the kit must be ordered *and paid for* by 31 Dec 2007.
Any certificates not used by December 31st will expire, although if the kits are ordered and paid for by the, they don't expire.

You can use the certificate and purchase the kit, even if you haven't decided yet who will use it. The kits have a virtually indefinite shelf-life (until the samples are actually taken), so you could purchase a kit now and use it later.

If you are interested, please contact me offlist and I will send you the link and instructions.

Roberta Estes

Thanks for your post. Nice to meet you! :-)
I just started doing genealogy research a few months ago and, thanks to the internet and boards like this, have already found so many ancestors. It's very exciting. I feel bad that I didn't get more info when grand- and great-grandparents were still alive; now it's more of a challenge tracking through the lineage. I've saved your message and if I run across any clues, will send a note. I'm also searching Harmon lineage (another HUGE challenge; there are many, many Harmons).
Thanks again!
Winnie Vanhoy married Haden Swinney: Apr 1837, Surry Co. NC

By 1850, Haden and Winnie b: 1816 NC were living in Murray Co. GA and had four children. Lucinda, Francis Marion, William, and Sarah Jemima. Also living with them was Mary Vanhoy b: 1828 NC. Mary later married James L. Haney and had two daughters, then she married a Williams. However, both husband's must have died because Mary keeps showing up in Haden and Winnie's household. One of the daughters is listed in Haden and Winnie's 1880 Whitfield Co. Census as a neice. Family records indicate that Clayton Jonathan Vanhoy and Elizabeth Kirk are Winnie and Mary's parents. Does anyone have any information of this connection? A. They were married on 31 Jan 1843 in Wilkes Co.
Re: Searching Russel B VANNOY b 1803/1804 TN

My great grandmother, Laura Sarepta Vannoy (born Nov 6, 1865; died Sep 17, 1937 (of complication of strep throat), is the only child of R B Vannoy and Nancy Ann Farris. My grandmother, Captola Thompson, told me that Laura always referred to herself as an orphan (I know that her mother died within 2.5 months of giving birth to Laura), and with that information I assumed that her father had also died.

I was told within the last several weeks that R B Vannoy was a minister and now it appears that he was a Cumberland Presbyterian Minister.

I went to the Obion Court House in Union City TN to verify that R B and Nancy were actually married. The marriage is recorded in the oldest book of marriages in the County Clerks office.

Any information that you have on R B's whereabouts after Jan 20 1866 would be much appreciated.

Mary Smith

I, too, am searching for a Vannoy who is my great-great grandfather. His name is Russell B Vannoy and he was born circa 1804 in Tennessee. He was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. The last U S census that he appears on is 1860 and he married my gg grandmother, Nancy Farris, in 1864. My g grandmother, Laura Sarepta Vannoy, is the only child of that marriage. My cousin, David Hayes, told me that some Vannoys from Missouri contacted him long ago and were certain that Russell B (R. B.) was related to them. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Mary Smith
My husbands family is from Missouri..and Russell B Vannoy was his great-great-great grandfather. His grandmother was Mary Ethel Vannoy Huey. Her father was Camillus Bean Vannoy. His father was Camillus Russell Vannoy..who was the son of Russell B Vannoy and his first wife. They were in Kentucky to Tennessee..then our family branch on to Missouri. Pemiscot and New Madrid Counties in Missouri is where they entered the state from Tennessee. I would love to compare notes..and share what I have. Post a message or e-mail me direct at mlhueyfamily at hotmail.com. Would love to hear from you. I'm planning a trip sometime in the near future to Obion County in Tennessee to visit some of the places where I know they were in earlier years.

As I haven't heard back from you..thought I would mention..if you google search R.B. Vannoy..Cumberland Presbyterian Church...you'll find several references to Russell B. Vannoy as a minister. I found messages people had posted stating R.B. Vannoy was the minister on their ancestors marriage bonds...references to him moderating meetings of the CPC..etc. These were all in the 1830's to 1850 time frame I believe(without looking back right now). He lists in some of the census records that he is a minister..others a farmer. So..I don't know for sure how long he was affiliated with the CPC. I would love to know where your family members lived so as to know where else for me to search also. I have no record of his death or where he might be laid to rest. Please let me know..if you have anything to share.

Hi..Russell B Vannoy is my husbands maternal 3X grandfather. I'm just on lunch now but would love to be able to compare notes on family lines. Russell indeed was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. Please let me hear from you. His son(by his first marriage to Julia possibly last name Burge)..was Camillus Russell Vannoy..who had a son..Camillus Bean Vannoy. Camillus B had a daughter Mary Ethel Vannoy. She was my husbands grandmother. Missouri is where they lived their lives out after leaving Tennessee.

Then migrated to Missouri(our home).

Does anyone have any information that will help me along on this search?

If so...all suggestions..greatly appreciated.

I don't find much on the Vannoy families in KY/TN.
Fairly new to the search..help needed..Thanks!

Trying to locate Mary Louise Vannoy

My birth mother's maiden name was Mary Louise Vannoy, she was 17 when she married my birth father (Harry Wesley Morris)on Dec. 10, 1949 in Keystone, Oklahoma. They divorced shortly after my birth in 1950. I am trying to locate her. I know that her family moved from OK. to Tennesse in 1950 or 1951. Her father's name(best I can find) is J.T. Vannoy and I have heard that she had a brother and a sister. I also have learned that she remarried and may have lived in the Wichita, Ks. area (also heard maybe in Denver). I would very much like to get some family medical background. If anyone can help please contact me at sfree10097@att.net.
