My GG grandfather was a Charles VanOrder and he was married to a May originally from Tioga Penn. Perhaps this is your Charles?
They had 4 children that I know of (possibly siblings of your Floyd?) in no particular order below:

-Hazel May VanOrder (my great grandmother) who married Albert Ernest Rose from Streider, Illinois
-Herald born in Flint Michigan
-Eltsy born in Steinberg (Mi? I assume) and died in Saratoga, California
-and a question mark for the 4th child

*again, they are not listed in order, and I have no idea about the years. Also I appologize for any misspellings on people or place names. I heard all of this orally and haven't been able to double check.

My grandfather was Floyd Vanorder. My mother never had much information about her family. Her dad and mother both died young. My mother was sent to live in a foster home. Any information you have would be appreciated. They lived around Homer and Union City Michigan.

Thanks,
Betty

Julius VanOrder and Annie Harris?

I am looking for any information on the death or marriage of Julius VanOrder to an Annie Harris. I am not for sure on the wifes last name. Julius was born in Oct 1862 in New York married Annie in approximately 1893 possibly in North Dakota. Was living in Milton-Freewater, Umatilla, Oregon in the 1900 Census. There is no record after 1900. Annie was listed as being born in Apr 1874 in Illinois. Her parents both were from Massachusetts. The one Annie Harris that I found in Illinois in the 1880 census shows parents where born in Illinois. Julius and Annie in the 1900 Census had three daugthers: Edith Gertrude born Jul 1895 in North Dakota, Mabel in September 1896 in South Dakota and Carrie in September 1898 in Oregon. They probably came to Oregon between 1896 and 1898. Only child that I have been able to find information on after 1900 was Edith Gertrude who my husband is related to.

According to the census records and other information I have found Charles and Louisa VanOrder had 10 children - George, William H., Louisa, John, Mary, Emma F. (my g-g grandmother), Minnie, Julius S., Eugene and Jennie. Originally from the Tompkins County NY area (see 1850 and 1860 census Ulysses Twp. Tompkins Co. NY) They are found in the 1870 census in Jackson Co. Michigan as "VanOrter" with Mary being the first family member listed (Ancestry.com search has the spelling as "VanOster") -- anyway -- Charles VanOrder died in Jackson County, MI on Dec. 10, 1875; Louisa VanOrder remarried in January 1978 to William Champlin (according to the History of Jackson County, Michigan - Springport Township page 1083); I located a death records for Louisa Champlain of Jackson County on July 12, 1880 - unfortunately the death records info found for Charles and Louisa had no other information (i.e. parents names etc...) I did locate a marriage record for George VanOrder and Gertie Weir for 8/11/1880 in Jackson Co., Michigan along with 1900 and 1910 census for them. My gg grandmother Emma VanOrder married Charles Atwell 6/18/1883 (this according to her application for his military pension benefits); they had 11 children - Bert, Daniel (my g-grandfather), Elmer, Eliza, Harvey, Charles T., Nettie, Roy, Ray and Lena. They lived most of their lives in Michigan in the Saginaw and Flint areas. I am still trying to research what I can online about the other siblings in this family but am limited to what I can find online right now as no time to travel to locations to sort through records. Hope this information helps.

Well, Julius Vanorder married Annie Harris approximately 1893 place unknown but they had three daughters Edith Gertrude Vanorder who was my husband's grandmother who was born 17 Jul 1895 in Jamestown, Stutsman, North Dakota and died on 16 Jul 1942 in Washington. She was buried in the New Tacoma Cemetery in Tacoma, Washington. Her sister Mabel was born in September 1896 in Dakota do not know which one, and Carrie was born in September 1898 in Milton-Freewater, Umatilla, Oregon. The family was found in the 1900 Census livng in Milton, Umatilla, Oregon. I have not been able to find them in the 1910 census still looking. Edith married Daniel William Rankin about 1915. They had nine children: Bruce Woodrow, Amy Bernice, John Franklin, Lois M, Evelyn B, Charlotte Louise (who is my mother-in-law), Mildred, Jerry, and Daniel Franklin. In the 1880 Census I found Julius working as a farm laborer for Orton H. Portor in Springport, Jackson, Michigan. His brother George was also working as a farm laborer for William Gillett in the same town. On this census record George is listed as a widow. In the 1870 Census I found George working as a farm laborer in Springport, Jackson, Michigan and married to Mary. In the 1860 Census I find George working as a farm laborer for a Harrison Vanorder and their is a Mary Quick who is also working for Harrison. Mary would be the right age as the Mary who is married to George in the 1870 census. I do not know if Harrison Vanorder is any relation to George and Julius. In the 1910 Census I find George married to a Gertrude C and living in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, California. In this record it list this marriage as his second. They have been married for 28 years (1882). In the 1900 Census George and Gertrude were living in Milton, Umatilla, Oregon as well. George was born in December 1842 and Gertrude in May 1849. This is all the information that I have. Do you have any information on the other brothers and sisters for Julius and/or his parents, grandparents, etc?

I'd be interested to learn what you know about the family to help fill in some blanks. Unfortunately, I lost a lot of the info I had collected due to a computer crash but I did photocopy some censuses and other documents. Anyhow, yes it does sound like your Julius is the brother of my great-great grandmother. According to the 1870 Tompkins, Jackson Co., MI census:
VanOrter
Mary, 17, Domestic Servant, b. NY
Charles, 53, Farmer, b. NY
Louisa, 44, Keeping House, b. Canada
Emma F., 11, attending school, b. NY
Julius S., 7, b. NY
Eugene, 5, b. NY
Jennie, 2, b. NY

Emma F. (Atwell) was my great-great grandmother (1858-1933). Do you know any further back? If not, I'd still be interested in learning what you know about Julius and his descendants.

He was also a farm laborer. Julius was born on October 1862 also in New York. On the census it lists parents on both as father born in New York and mother in Canada. So, I could very well have some wrong.
Anyway, my thought was same as yours. My family could be related to the Dewitt's. Thomas P VanOrder, b. bef. 1820, named one of his sons Dewitt VanOrder. And another son, John H (my gggrandfather), named one of his sons Manning Dewitt.

Van Ordens of Catskill, NY

Dear Valerie,

If you can verify that Henry Van Orden and Temperance DeWitt are your ancestors I can take you back alot further. Unfortunately the Van Orden family history that was given to me does not indicate who their children were so I can't make the connection.

VanOrder family

My grandfather was Floyd VanOrder. His Father was Charles VanOrder. I believe they lived in Branch county, Michigan. My mother lost her father when she was just 4 years old. She lost her mother when she was 6. She went to a foster home to live. She really never had much information about her family. I have been to see my grandfathers grave, but my mother never knew where her mother's grave was. She thought it might be in Homer, Michigan.

Anything you can help me with, will be appreciated.

Charles VanOrder, Tompkins Co, NY, b. c1818, m. Louisa

I'm looking for information on the VanOrder family of Ulysses, Tompkins Co., New York. My great-great grandmother was Emma F. VanOrder Atwell (1858-1933). I believe I have found her family in the 1860 census, it gives her parents as Charles, 42 and Louisa, 34. Her siblings were Louisa, 15, John F., 10, Mary J., 7 and Minnie G., 1 mo. All except the mother Louisa were born in New York. For Louisa's birthplace, it looks like the abbreviation "L.C.", I don't know what that could mean. I believe I've found the same family in the 1850 census, the names and ages of those that would have been alive match and there were two additional children: George, 7 and William, 2. I could not find them in the 1870 census but there were quite a few VanOrder's in nearby Ithaca. I imagine there's a connection there but I gotta go back at least one generation to find it. From what I understood from my grandfather, Emma married a man, had a child Burt and the husband must have died so she married a second time to Charles T. Atwell. Charles legally adopted Burton, so his name was changed. They lived in Saginaw Co., Michigan and had 10 more children - Daniel, Orson, Elmer, Eliza, Harvey, Charles Jr., Nettie, Ray, Roy, and Lena. Thank you.
Kevin Horsch

I too am researching the VanOrders. My great-grandfather was Daniel Atwell (son of Charles Atwell and Emma VanOrder Atwell). I also have the same census information but I have a different version of events surrounding Burt. I did locate some basic information on Emma Atwell and Burt Atwell's obituaries online. Would like to compare notes. Please feel free to e-mail.
