Curious if anyone is researching the family of Samuel VanOmen, b. ca1720-30, probably in Ulster Co., NY [spelled many ways].

He married Margret Brink, d/o Roeloff Brink of Ulster Co. Known children Roelof VanOmen, b. 1750, Winchtje VanOmen, b. 1752 and John VanOmen, b. 1753.

He apparently died ca1755 as Margret remarried Henry Countryman and had Susannah Countryman. We have no proof, but I imagine Samuel was killed in the Indian attach at Dansbury (Stroudsburg) or close vicinity.

What happened to Harrison Vanorman after the Civil War? He married Christiana Hoffman/Huffman about 1854 in Michigan. They had a daughter Mary. This family group appears in the 1860 Census living in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, but not anywhere that I can find after that. Christiana may have married again by the 1870 Census, but I cannot confirm this.

Van Orman Henry 1834 PA

I am new to genealogy. I have recently started a family tree for my children entitled Claggett Family Tree. According to my father's family crest which was professionally done I descend to the Isaac and Jannetje Van Aernum line. I was born in Ft. Wayne, IN 1961 and my father is Frederick Harold Van Orman, Jr.(IN) his father is F. Harold Van Orman (MI), his father is Fred Van Orman (MI), and his father is Henry Van Orman. Henry Van Orman (sp?) who was born in PA in and that is as far as I have gotten which is around 1834. From our family crest it says that our family comes down from Isaac Van Aernum 1704 from his marriage to Jannetje

I see that you are working on this line too and I have copied many of your conversations with Doug for my files. Do you think we are distant relatives?

I have a few missing generations to connect my pedigree. Does anyone have any hints or names for me? This is fascinating work and I am enjoying it very much. Thanks

Susan Van Orman Claggett
I assume that since you have John Westley Vanorman's marriage and death info that he falls into your line somewhere? His sister, Rebecca, was my great-great grandmother.

I don't have a lot of info, but I do have their parents names, along with some info I have gathered from various census records.
I also am working on the Vannorman's of Monroe Co., PA. I believe that Jemina could be a sister to my ancestor Jacob Van Norman. My Jacob Van Norman was married to Polly Parks and lived in Chemung Co., New York and later moved to Wisconsin. There father was Samuel Van Norman who married Phebe. I believe they also had a brother James who lived in Stroud, Monroe Co., PA and was listed on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses. Samuel Van Norman was also listed on the censuses from 1790 to 1840 in Northampton and then Monroe Co., PA (Lower Smithfield or Stroud Twsp).

There were some other Vannormans in Northampton County - I have the following land warrants

Isaac Varnoman - Survey 400 acres - dated 3/27/1793
Mary Varnoman - Survey 400 acres - Lower Smithfield - dated 3/27/1793
Jacob Varnoman - Survey 400 acres - Lower Smithfield - dated 3/27/1793
Clary Varnoman - Survey 400 acres Lower Smithfield - dated 3/27/1793- returned 3/18/1828 445.31 acres - name of patentee - Benjamin R. Morgan
Samuel Varnoman - Survey 400 acres - Plainfield - dated 3/27/1793 - returned 6/15/1836 438.39 - name of patentee -John Bogs

Samuel Vanorman - survey 30 acres Stroud - on 4/2/1831
Ephraim Vanorman - survey 400 acres 10/12/1792 returned 6/10/1870 399.14 acres to Solomon Westfall e.t.a.l.

Would like to get information about Jemina - her children.
Van Arnam -- Invariably Dutch?

I just came across an ancestral thread that includes a long line of Van Arnams, in Wisconsin (Dane & Douglas Counties) from the 1850s-1900s, and NY before that, and I'm wondering whether the Van Arnam surname (and all its variants -- Van Ornam, Vannarnam, Van Norman, etc etc) is almost always Dutch, or can it be just as frequently English or German? Does anyone have a good handle on this surname? Any and all help much appreciated.

Thankyou for your suggestion. I had already located Samuel Vanorman and James Vanorman and their family on the 1800 census (on the same page.) I also noted there was an Isaac Vanorman ca 1768 in the same area who could have possibly been their father. Jemima named her first 2 sons James and Samuel. I am hoping to find something that will confirm information about this family. Thank you. Valerie

You should consider Samuel as a good candidate for her father. He's in Lower Smithfield (just north of Stroudsburg) in the 1800 census with 4 children under 10 years old. Good luck. I've been following various Vanorman's for several years.

Well Hello Cousin,

So glad to hear from you, I'm sorry it took so long to get up with you. To be honest, I had actually forgotten about this list until one day I had gotten an email reminding me about it. I am very much looking forward to sharing with you and getting to know another part of my family. I have a family website up, and if you email at my Yahoo address (danhawkins81@yahoo.com) I'll be more than happy to give you the password so that you can have access to what I have.

Okay, my mother Sandra Harrington's mother is Dorothy VanOrman whose mother was Mabel Garland who was married to Fredrick George VanOrman whose parents were George Sidney and Betsy Mae Thayer. I actually now have a few pictures of them.

I can't wait to start sharing with you. I'm 43 years old and this is the first I've really learned about this side of the family. It was never talked about, and now that Mabel has passed some years ago, whatever she knew is being quickly lost. I am so excited.

Look forward to hearing from you and working with you.

Sincerely,

Dan Hawkins

Greetings,

This is very interesting. Frederick George VanOrman is my great grandfather, born February 7, 1898 in Dwane, Franklin, New York. His father was George Sidney VanOrman, born January 4, 1877 in Vermont. George Sidney VanOrman had married Bessie May Thayer, born March 1878 in Vermont. They married in 1897.

This is a family line that I've just started going after, and this is as far as I've gotten. I've been thrilled with getting information about this line because it was one of those lines that had gotten divorced and so nobody spoke about. I'd love to get past George Sidney VanOrman

Just found your query of Jan 2004 regarding your ancestor Frederick George Van Orman. I have an ancester whose name was George Frederick Van Orman born 1779-1781. He was the second son of Isaac Van Orman born 1755. The oldest son was Miles, born 1777, 3rd child was Rachel born 1781, Ethan Annen born 1783, Heman born 1785 and Theodore, born 1891. Theodore is my link to this family. Seems ironic that your ancestor has the same names only in the reverse order. If this is familiar top you, please contact me.
