Re: Vanzant's in Boone Co., Arkansas

Vicky,
I am interested in Andrew Jackson VanZant and Rhoda Ann Hinds VanZant. The death date you show for Andrew is actually the date his estate in McMinn County TN was settled. I have a copy. His death date was in 1848 in Iowa. I found VanZant family letters at Iowa University which show some of the family's movements. Andrew and Rhoda moved to Iowa (he had a brother there) in 1847/48. Andrew died and Rhoda moved back to Roane County, TN. In 1850 she is shown on the Roane County census. Shortly thereafter Rhoda had a third child, Willian Harrison VanZant, father unknown, but could not have been Andrews. In 1856 Rhoda is named in the estate of her mother Sarah Payne Hinds. In 1860 William Harrison VanZant (age 9) is shown living with a Hinds family (Rhoda's siblings)

In you post you show that Rhoda died in Arkansas on January 20, 1879. Can you provide me with a copy of the documentation?

I have pictures of John Write VanZant and Dallas Lafatette VanZant. Somewhere, I have it documented who provided the pictures.

John.Vanzant@gmail.com

I came across the marriage bond for Martin Timothy Vanzant (son of William G. Vanzant & Catherine Baker) and Mary Clark.

The records shows:
1. Bonded by Martin Timothy Vanzant and John W. Fondren.
2. Dated Dec 31, 1875.

Martin and Mary were subsequently married on Jan 2, 1876 in Booneville, Prentiss County, Mississippi.

Mary died in 1880. She and Martin had one child, Alexander Grove Vanzant.

Martin later married Martha Jane (Kiddy) Carter in 1882.

If anyone would like to share information regarding this family please let me know.

Luann

William G. Vanzant & Catherine Baker Alabama Mississippi

To anyone interested in this family. I came across the Creek Indian War records and the Widow's Pension Claim for William G. Vanzant and Catherine (Baker) Vanzant.

The records indicated:
1. William G. and Catherine married on March 18, 1841 at Obediah Baker's (Catherine's father) home in Alabama.
2. William G. received a land grant in Alabama for his war service in 1850.
3. William G. died on Jan 20, 1891 in Booneville, MS on the property of William Thomas Rogers (his nephew-in-law).
4. Slyvester Baker was the brother of Catherine (Baker) Vanzant and was still living at the age of 77 in 1894.
5. Catherine's address for mail in 1894 was Spencer, Fayette County, Alabama.
6. Obediah was the father of Sylvester and Catherine Baker.
7. William G. served for 1 month and 7 days in the Creek Indian Wars of 1836 under the command of B.A. Philpott as part of the Volunteer Alabama 4th regiment.

I would like to share information with other researchers of the descendents of these my gg grandparents.

Luann

I don't know which son of Garrett and Elizabeth I am related to but my grandmother was 4th cousin to Evelyn Jane vz who descended from William. I'm having trouble deciding how far back that takes me. My assumption is that would be to the sons of Garret and Elizabeth. Please tell me more about your lineage as I might see a connection.
Wendy
My email is mikewendy@aol.com

Hi Kevin and Melissa,

I'm the editor for the Van Zandt Society. I produce 3 newsletters each year for the Society of about 20 pages each. The newsletters include stories about noteable family members from the past and present as well as just about anything that you can think of that's related to Vanzants, Van Sants, Van Zandts, and all various spellings.

I'm currently working on an article for publication in Feb. about a man named Frank Van Zant (1921-1989). William G. Vanzant (1817-1891) was his 3rd great grandfather. I consulted the society's vast database (more than 45,000 records) and the society's historian in order to understand how William G. fits into the family.

Researchers have determined that William's father was James Vanzant (b. abt. 1748), son of Garret (1726-1787) and Mary. Garret was a grandson of Gerret Stoffelse Vansand and Lysbeth Gerritse.

If you are interested in information about the Society, or our family newsletter, please see our website: www.vanzandtsociety.com

Laurie

From TX census records, the John Vanzant you are interested in was born in TN in 1868 and he married Maggie around 1888. The children you listed are mentioned on their census records of 1900 and 1910.

Stepping back, John was the son of Isaac Vanzant, born 1839 in TN and Mary J. McElroy, born 1842. They lived in Franklin, TN and had a number of children in addition to John. Isaac died in 1918.

Isaac was the son of Joel Vanzant (1810-1865) born in NC, died in TN. He was married to Sarah E. Limbaugh.
Joel was the son of Isaac Vanzant (1780-1850).
Isaac was the son of Jacob Vanzant (1751-1818) and Catherine Moon/Moore.
Jacob was the son of Garrett and Mary Vanzant of NC. It is believed that Garrett was the son of Albert and Rebecca Vanzant who lived in Delaware but whose roots were in Bucks Co., PA.

For additional information about the earliest generations of this family, check out www.vanzandtsociety.com

When searching, remember to try all variations including Vinzant, Vinsant, Van Zandt, Vanzant, Vansant, etc.

The obituary was from Sept 13, 1935 Titled Markham Ontario loses link with Past. Mrs. R. A. Mason dies after year's Illness - of pioneer stock, it says " She came of an early York County family of Hollandese extraction and U.E.L. stock. Her great-grandfather, Garret VanZant, emigrated to Canada in 1796 and settled in Toronto, then a collection of 12 or 14 houses. Later he settled on the 10th concession of Markham, cleared a bush farm , reared his family and died in 1858m aged 98 years. Her grandfather, William Vanzant was born in Toronto in 1804, cleared a farm in Uxbridge Township, and later moved to Markham village. He served in the rebellion of 1837 under William Lyon Mackenzie, for which his valuable holdings in Toronto were confiscated . Only one portion was reserved that, the grave of Jane VanZant, which is still intact in the business section of downtown Toronto. He died in Markham in 1890, The article says that the deceased is survived by her husband, one son Harry of Markham , two daughters and two brothers, Clifford and Frank VanZant.
Let me know what info you have. I still don't know exactly how we are related to Garret . My great grandmother I believe was Josaphine Van Zant.
Wendy
