Nicholas Donald Vassar

For over 25 years my mother and I have been trying to find information about my grandfather. My father never knew his father but according to the marriage certificate my father's parent's, Nicholas Donald Vassar and Florence Emmeline Jarvis were married on 24 June 1925 in Flushing, NY. Two witnesses to the marriage were Mabel E. Vassar and Mabel Vassar. My father was born the following year. Sometime after June 1926, Nicholas left, and in March of 1930, Florence got a divorce. One of my father's aunt's thought that Mabel Vassar might have been Nicholas' sister, and the Mabel E. Vassar was his mother. I have confirmed through old church records where the marriage took place that Mabel E. was his mother and John was his father. My fathers birth record says that Nicholas was born in Delaware. Otherwise I have been unable to locate any other information about my grandfather and his family. My father is elderly now and would love to know something about his family, so if anyone working on a Vassar family, has run across any of these names, I would really love to hear from you.

My father was Wesley David Gladeau. My father and Patricia had three girls at a young age. As I recall, your mom and her sister were adopted by a professor and his wife from Pullman. Your mom's youngest was adopted by another family in Spokane. I am not sure if you are looking for any information regarding Wes or Dave as he was often called. If so, please feel free to email me.

I am still working on getting information on the LeVasseur who migrated from France to England during the Heugonaut (sp?) period. I will let you know if, and when, I find anything. I am a Vassar by birth, daughter of John Vassar, granddaughter of John Francis Vassar, great granddaughter of Michael Vassar b. 1824 in Canada(?) We have not been able to trace further back and I am looking for links. I believe they went to canada from England but not sure. I did find the LeVasseur name recently on my mothers side back in the middle ages. What can you tell me about the families from France and England?

Let me see if I have this correct. Levi, John and Joshua were brothers, right? Also, was there father the same Joshua Vassar listed in the 1850 census as being born in 1773\77 in the state of North Carolina?

The above is the conclusion that I have.

Question, who is the father of Joshua Vassar B. 1777 in North Carolina? From what I can determine, the Vassars in North Carolina descend from the Amelia County, Va. Vassars who descend from John Vassar of 1675. Am I correct in this conclusion and if so, how does Joshua 0f 1777 connect?

This seems to be my missing link. Can anyone help?

Nancy Jane Vasser's brother Richard A was my gggrandmothers brother. There was one other sister I know for certain, Martha Adeline and my gg grandmother was Emily Elizabeth Vasser. In the 1850 census there were also listed other siblings. Elbert census for Nancy placed her as 4 y/o- page/line 375/178 (I may have page and line reversed). If you have any other info regarding Nancy's parents I would appreciate your sharing it with me. I believe I know but am not certain.

I'm looking for the parent's names of James Madison Vassar, born 1858 in California, died 1924. Married to Angeletta J. Kelsay. His parents are both from Missouri, and he had one younger brother named Edward. James shows up in the 1900 and 1910 Census with his son James Fountain Vassar.

I do have a question on Charles Vassar -known to us as "Old Drag". (never married) He was born about 1871 to Peter Jackson and Matilda(?)Vassar and is a brother to George W. Vassar. In fact he was raised by George and Bess after his parents died. I know he lived in the Walthill area in later years but so far have not found a death date or place. Probably died in late 1950's or early 6o's. May have been buried in the Walthill, NE cemetery.

Also, would you happen to know Matilda's last name? I have her born about 1835 in Ohio and died after 1870. Peter b. Mar 1829, Pulaski, KY, d. after 1880. (Richardson Co., NE) I do not know where they were buried. The 1880 NE. census has Peter married to "Elizabeth" - second wife.

Hi Shannon - thank you for the Truth Vassar corrections. I will probably have more questions later on.
As to the Evergreen Cemetery, Lyons - I have Fanny Vassar's obituary and it says Lyons. The next time I get to NE I plan to visit that cemetery to verify my information. I grew up in the Bancroft area not far from there (many years ago).

Hi Janice,

Thank you for sending some more info on the Vassars. Alot of it was very similar to the history I have. I only found only a few differences. Truth Vassar, my great grandma, married 3 times. Alvin Ring, my great grandpa, with whom she had Oma <-she is my gr-aunt, Connie (my grandma), Stanley, Joan, and Don. Truth also married Carl Palmer with whom she had Rick, and she also married a man named Art Bratt.

Also, you mentioned an Evergreen Cementary in Lyons. I know there is also an Evergreen Cementary in Walthill in Thurston County, where the Rings settled. I only know this, cause I lived there for alot of my life.

I will look into the Sarah Davis thing in my files and see if I have anything on that, and I'll let you know.

My family knew the Vassar's well - we were from the Thurston and Cuming Co. areas of NE. and a relative. I would love to have a copy of the pictures. Can that be arranged?. My connection to the Vassar family is through my great great grandfather James W. Kessinger. He married Elizabeth (Bess) Vassar (b. 22 Mar 1859-daughter of Nicholas Sherman and Sarah (Burgess) Vassar). They married in Holt County, MO. abt 1874. Moved to Richardson Co., NE in late 1870's. Elizabeth and James divorced 10 May 1883. Elizabeth married her cousin George W. (son of Peter Jackson and Matilda (?) Vassar) 2 Jul 1883, Richardson Co., NE. George and Elizabeth moved to Abline, KS area about 1906 where they remained and are buried in the Abiline Cemetery. George d. 8 Feb 1930 and Elizabeth d. 7 Mar 1938.

Elizabeth's sister Fanny married her cousin(and brother of George W.) Samuel (Sam) Vassar 16 May 1881, Falls Ciy, Richardson Co., NE. Samuel d.20 Mar 1938 and Fanny 9 Feb. 1945. They lived in Thurston Co. NE in the Walthill area but are buried in the Lyons Ne. -Evergreen Cemetery.

Nicholas Sherman Vassar b. abt 1828 in MO., d. 3 May 1906, Thurston Co., buried Everygreen Cemetery, Lyons, NE. Sarah (Burgess) b.6 Jul 1823, OH., d.16 Mar 1905, bu. Harris Cemetery, Richardson Co., Barada, NE.

Chilldren of Nicholas and Sarah:
Melvina b.abt 1848
Sarah Ellen b.abt 1852
Lizzie J. b.abt 1856
Fanny Jeanette b.abt 25 Feb 1866
William b.abt 1870

I have a question - I have proof that Nicholas married Sarah Burgess 13 April 1848 in Wapello Co., IA. But on his daughter Elizabeth's (Bess) death certificate it list Sarah DAVIS not Burgess as her mother. Can anyone clear that up?

As for Truth R Vassar (b. 12 Apr 1902). She married Alvin Ring, they had children: Joan, Omar, Stanley and Connie. She then married Carl Pratt Palmer and they had a son Rick. All I know abt Truth at this time.

Not sure you check this any longer, but my ggfather William James Vassar of Napoleon, Indiana married Margaret Burton, same birth date, as his 3rd wife. She helped raise his 3 youngest children by Sarah Laughlin. First marriage had 10 children, 2nd marriage 5. I have all the info if you would like it. The only additional information I have now is Audre Bell(e) Vassar's parents were Brooks Vassar and Katherine Tomason Vassar. Audre Bell(e) Vassar is buried in Greenwood Cemetary, New Orleans, La. I have a photo of the gravestone inscription -- it give no additional information.

Two Vasser brothers married Bryson sisters - Levi m Margaret Loucinda and John m Millie Maria (n) and stayed in the Barry/linn counties until their deaths.

Joshua Vasser married Nancy Summers in Cannon County, TN in 1844.

The Bogles, Brysons, Summers, Vasser familes all moved from Cannon County, TN to Missouri in the late 1840s.

Yes, that information was just what I needed. I am also trying to trace Jonathan Riley Vasser B. 1842 Married Elizabeth Herrington in 1850 and then Nancy Lambart in 1872. I don't think Elizabeth died as she shows up in the 1880 & 1900 census with son John R Vasser. You wouldn't have any info on them would you?

I'd also like info in Adeline/Delina Vassar. Yankton Sioux The info I have is Lizziam Archambeau and Adeline Vassar were parents of Annie Archameau, who was married to Charles Martin. They had 3 children. Laura, Peter and Nancy Martin. Nancy Martin married Martin or Charles (I forget) Escarcega. sp? They had a bunch of kids, one was my grandmother. I do know that the Escarcega's were from Fort Peck Assiniboine Sioux Tribe. I do have an old photo of Nancy Martin, but nothing further.

Still tracing roots, but at a standstill.

I was just going through Ancestry.com and saw your post about Linzel Noel Vassar. He was my Great Uncle and first married I believe to Beulah but I have only known his second wife (Aunt)Etta of Ponca City Oklahoma (still a vibrant active woman well into her 80's! Linzel was brother to my grandfather Oroville Edward Vassar. They used their middle names to make my father's name Edward Noel Vassar, and I am Edward Noel Vassar II. I noticed their was a reply from Phil Jobe, he is my cousin, my second cousin, the grandson of my father's sister Norma Vassar Jobe who now lives in Butler , Mossouri. By the way there were four kids from Ethel and Oroville: Norma-Kenneth-Ronnie and Edward. Ronnie is deceased but had 3 kids:Robin, Kimberly(Kim) and Anthony(Tony).
Linzel and Orville also had a sister Lorraine who lived most if her life in Reno I believe and a younger brother brother named Arthur who lived in north-central California. I don't know that Lorraine was married but Arthur married a German woman named Gert.
Anyway, I know it was a long time you posted that request, but I just stumbled accrossed it.
If you're still curious, I have the entire Vassar history and what I don't know, My dad certainly does.

I'm looking for a Sam Vassar family from Rosalie,Thurston, Nebraska. Looking for their son John June Vassar born Oct. 23, 1900 according to his Registration card listed on Ancestry.com. From family I know he was married to Ollie Rager from Thurston County for a short time and had children Norma and Bud Vassar. Can you help? Can't find him any other place in my research. It's like he just appeared and then disappeared. John and Ollie were not married very long.

Hi. I have John June Vassar in my Library! He was the son of Samuel & Fanny Vassar. Born around the year you have. I'm afraid I am not going to be much help. He was my Great-grandma's Truth's brother and trust me Truth was hard to find as well. I do on the other hand have very old pictures of Samuel Vassar, Fanny, Truth, and Edith (who is another sister) Here is what I have as far as family record.

Samuel Vassar born July of 1861 in Missouri and died in 1938 in Nebraska. He married Fanny Janet Vassar daughter of Nicholas Vassar and Sarah Burgess.

In the 1900 Census they are living in Richardson County, Nebraska and by this time they were married for 20 years. The 1910 Census has the family living in Thurston County. They raised alot of their family members children along with their own .

The Children of Samuel and Fanny are:

1. Edith Bell Vassar b. December 10, 1883 Barada, Nebraska d. April 1969, Nebraska
2. John June Vassar, b. 1901
3. Truth Rickie Vassar, b. 1902
4. Mary Vassar b. April 10, 1906
5. Izolia B. Vassar b. April 2, 1886, Nebraska d. April 1969, Nebraska
6. Charles Vassar
7. Alvie Vassar, b. Feb 1883
8. Lenna Vasar b. Jan 1892
9. Zoe Vassar b. abt. 1890

This is what I have on Nicholas Sherman Vassar. He was born in Missouri and married a Sarah Burgess April 7, 1845 in Iowa.

1850 US CENSUS FOR IOWA , WAPELLO COUNTY DISTRICT 13

He is a farmer whos property value is $160. He is on farm #1380. His father is on farm #1378 and his brother William is on #1379. Sarah was born in Maryland. They had a daughter Melvina age 2 born in Iowa.

1860 US CENSUS MISSOURI HOLT COUNTY, DALLAS TWP.
Name was spelled Vesser.
Farm laborer, personal estate valued at $300

1870 US CENSUS NEBRASKA RICHARDSON COUNTY ST. STEPHENS PREC.
Farm Laborer worth $500 still spelling the name Vesser.

1880 US CENSUS NEBRASKA RICHARDSON COUNTY
Was a Cooper (a person who makes barrells and containers of wood and metal)
Father born in Kentucky mother born in Tennessee. Has George Vassar 21 yrs old as servant. Now Spells Vassar.
Owns a Farm 10 acres improved, 30 woodlands and forests. Value of the farm in 1879, $400. Livestock $160, farm equipment $18, cost of fence building $100. Estimated value of farm prduction $50. Horse 2, 1 milk cow, 30lbs of butter made, 7 swine, 17 poultry, 10 dozen eggs, 10 acres in corn (200 bushells), 5 cords of wood at a value of $20.
