Re: Vaughan-Vaughn Research

Hi. I think it is interesting that the STEPHENS and VAUGHAN's are related by DNA. My 3rd great grandfather William J. STEPHENS was born in Illinois in 1850. In the 1860 census, Henderson County, Illinois, he is living with William A. VAUGHN/VAUGHAN and wife. After William J. STEPHENS marries Anna RUSSELL in 1870, they live next to William A. VAUGHN/VAUGHAN. William J. STEPHENS and Anna even name one of their children after William A. VAUGHN/VAUGHAN. I've been trying to figure out if the they were related or if the VAUGHNs/VAUGHANs just "fostered" him? I don't know William J. STEPHENS parents names? The 1880 Census has his Dad born in Pennslyvania and his Mom in Ohio. But, those could be wrong. I've seen it before. William J. STEPHENS is my "brickwall" or "needle in a haystack." I have been trying several different approaches lately to find more information.

Thanks.

#familytreewanted
#stephensfamilytreewanted

Vaughan, Elizabeth (Australia Died 1914)

Hi
I am searching any other information or verification on the above lady who was my second great grandmother. She was married twice 1st to John Bruce Taylor and had two daugters Amy Ethel and Elizabeth Mary Taylor. Then 2nd Thomas Larkin and they had several children, Vera, Dorothy, Annie, Thomas and John. I know they lived in Melbourne Victoria. I have it recorded that she was born in 1842 and her parents were Thomas and Mary Vaughan who are recorded as having come over from Liverpool In 1840 aboard the ship Georgina. It is rcorded them being from Cork also. They had other children, Benjamin, Richard, Ellen and Horiana. This does seem to fit time wise etc but I am hoping someone can share some light on the subject and verify this for me.
Cheers Maddie

I live in Middlesbrough, Well Stockton-On-Tees to be precise. I grew up hearing the names of Vaughan and Bolchow, last night I was at a Memories of Middlesbrough event when it was mentioned that Vaughan was origonaly welsh and that an awful lot of welsh people followed after him to gain work at his company. I had always assumed that he was a Middlesbrough born man.

Anyway I have a welsh 2x Great Grandfather Evan Thomas who was a Labourer at an Iron Works and I was wondering if there was a way to find out if he worked for Vaughan or not? Baring in mind that he's origonaly meant to have been a policeman in wales before being stricken here for not speaking english.

Hi,
I think I may have your answer regarding Seldon Vaughan's parents. I have a book titled "Descendents of John Vaughan" that was written by H. Vaughan Griffin Sr. and published in 1976. On page 334 he lists the parent of Seldon as Adoniram Judson Vaughan and Sarah Cornelia Darling. Adoniram is the son of Noble A. Vaughan, one of Benjamin Vaughan Jr.'s many children. He obtained this info from an 1880 census which show Seldon as being 12 years old.

I'm a descendent of Benjamin Vaughan, Jr. His son, James Emerson, by his 2nd wife Sylvina Averill, was my 3rd great-grandfather. James is also the brother of Noble and Nathan. I am trying to link James to Benjamin in order to make an application with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). How can I get a copy of the Vaughan genealogy book by Nathan Vaughan that you mentioned? I would be happy to pay to have a copy made so that I can keep it with my records on our family and use a stronger proof of my lineage.

Thank you,

Nancy Mona Harrington Glass
According to a modern map, it is 53.5 MILES from Stafford to Worcester. I doubt that someone would have travelled that distance to baptise their child on the same day in 1802. I suspect the Stafford entry is an anomaly, given that John Vaughan was supposed to have been born at Worcester.

This article is useful in identifying John Vaughan's brothers, Amaziah and Joseph.

Reynolds's Newspaper London, 3 Oct 1869. AN IRONMASTER'S WILL; and PALL MALL GAZETTE, London, 28 Sept 1869. The Darlington Times give the following particulars of the will of the late Mr John Vaughan:-
“It is now twelve months since Mr John Vaughan the discoverer of the Cleveland ironstone died at his London residence. Born in the last year of the last century, he had, from a boy, gathering scrap iron in works in Wales, advanced step by step through all the business of iron-making, until he became, with Mr Bolckow, owner of one of the largest ironworks in the world. His great practical knowledge, his untiring industry, commercial ability, and discoveries, yielded him immense wealth, and at the time of his death, he was rich. The personalty was sworn under 180,000L, but this large sum of money does not by any means represent the fortune which the late lamented gentleman had accumulated. During his protracted illness he transferred to his only son, Mr Thomas Vaughan, now the largest pig-iron maker in the world, half of his shares in the firm of Bolckow, Vaughan and Co, that represented 200,000L, and Gunnergate Hall and Cleveland Lodge, near Middleborough. The will, which is dated November 24, 1866, recites that he had only one son, Thomas Vaughan, and that he had adopted three children of his present wife by her former husband, viz. William Vaughan, Ann Jane Newcomen, and Mary Ann Elwon. To his wife the testator leaves an annuity of 3,000L and a legacy of 1,000L, payable a month after his death, and all furniture, carriages, jewels, stones, and ornaments at premises Hyde Park Gate - plate, furniture, books, musical instruments, and other articles at house Hyde Park Gate, after widowhood or death, to merge to Thomas Vaughan absolutely. To his nephew Joseph Vaughan, of Witton Park, he bequeaths 3,000L; to his butler Henry French 200L; and to four nieces, daughters of deceased’s brother Joseph Vaughan, 500L each for their separate use. To his brother, Anaziah [sic, Amaziah] Vaughan, he bequeaths 5,000L; to William Vaughan, 50,000L; to Ann Jane Newcomen 40,000L; and to Mary Ann Elwon, 40,000L. He bequeaths 5,000L for the maintenance and education of Henry T. V. Elwon, and 5,000L to George Archibald William Montgomerie Newcomen for his maintenance and education. He bequeaths to Thomas Vaughan house furniture, stores and farming stock at Gunnergate Hall and Ugthorpe Lodge, and any other dwelling in his occupancy, and devises residuary real and household property to Thomas Vaughan absolutely. Mr Thomas Vaughan and Mr Joseph Dodds MP for Stockton are the trustees.

This is the best article as it confirms what I had worked out, ie that Vaughan's wife Ann married three times and that her three surviving children were to both her first two husbands.

Newcastle Guardian and Tyne Mercury Tyne and Wear, 19 Sep 1868. DEATH OF MR JOHN VAUGHAN, OF MIDDLESBOROUGH. On Wednesday morning at two o'clock, Mr John Vaughan, of the firm of Bolckow and Vaughan the extensive iron manufacturers of Middlesborough, after a lingering illness, extending over eighteen months, died, at his London residence, Hyde Park Gate. For the last two years, the deceased gentleman had been unable to take any part in public affairs, and his health failing rapidly and paralysis setting in, he was advised last year to leave Gnnergate Hall, near Middlesborough, and live in London. Up to that time he had been attended by Mr Craster, surgeon [Dr Thomas William Craster, husband of John Vaughan’s niece Adelaide Vaughan, daughter of John’s brother Joseph]. After removing to the metropolis his illness for a while abated, but returned with greater severity. Eminent doctors were called in, and everything that medical skill could suggest was promptly adopted, but change of air and the most careful nursing failed to protract the life of one of the hardest workers and most experienced men in the iron trade of the present day, and on Wednesday morning, in the presence of his only son, Mr Thomas Vaughan, and a few relatives, he tranquilly expired, aged 69 years.
As soon as the sad intelligence of Mr Vaughan’s death reached Middlesborough on Wednesday forenoon, a gloom was thrown over the town, the bells of St Hilda’s rang muffled peals, the lags on the public buildings and on board the ships in the dock were hoisted half-mast high, and many were the regrets at the death of one of the founders of the Northern capital of the iron trade. The remains of the deceased gentleman will be conveyed by rail from London to Gunnergate Hall, and will be interred in the family vault at Marton. Mr Bolckow is at present in Switzerland, but having been telegraphed for he will hasten home to pay his last respects to one whom he esteemed so highly. The funeral will take place on Monday, at Marton Church Yard, in the family vault.
Mr Vaughan was twice married. By his first wife, Eleanor Downing, the issue was four sons – Joseph, John, John and Tom (so christened) [not true, he was named Thomas in his baptism record] of whom the first two having died early, and the third before attaining his majority, the youngest survives his father as the only child, there being no issue by the second marriage with Annie, daughter of Mrs Poole of Newcastle. This lady is now his relict, and though childless to Mr Vaughan, had families by each of her former husbands – Mrs George Newcomen [Ann Jane] and Mrs Major Elwon [Mary Ann] to the first [ie Alexander Brown] and Mr William Vaughan to the second [ie William Hughes], each of whom some time back assumed their stepfather’s surname, and hence a misconception has arisen as regards the lineage of the Vaughan family.

There is a lot on the family in the following, including a report on John Vaughan's funeral.

http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk OR http://www.findmypast.co.uk but both are pay-to-view or subscription. Try a search on JOHN VAUGHAN BOLCKOW with a date 1868. Leave out the date for general information.

Also worth trying http://genforum.genealogy.com/vaughan/

For particular parish look-ups try http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php which can be very helpful.

Looking at the censuses, John's birthplace is confusing. In 1851 he gave Walsal, Staffordshire, which was crossed out and then written as Wales. In 1861, he also had Walsal, Stafforshire.

By coincidence, Amaziah has two entries on https://familysearch.org/ - one for Bedwardine and one for Stafford.

Walsal/Walsall had a number of ironworks and so I imagine that he was connected with the town in some way.

There was a marriage betwenn John Vaughan and Mary Burgess in Staffordshire in 1797 but probably just a coincidence.

David

Documentation

When I first started doing genealogy research I didn't write down anything except the bare facts. Then I quit researching altogether - life just got in the way!!! But now that I am quite a bit older and starting to research again, I see that "no documentation" method is not good at all.

While I had not yet published anything except an occasional board query, so I haven't contributed a lot to the mess, there are a lot of others who have been misled due to faulty or no documentation. I've spent a good bit of time just correcting mistakes folks have on my immediate family. I hate to think what a mess it will be to sort out the distant generations that I don't have first hand knowledge of. I so wish I'd had someone to tell me how to do it right the first time! And I'm so very appreciative of all the kind folks who've led me by the hand and been so helpful to me.

And that's one of the main reasons why I keep my tree private. I don't want it out there on the web until I have documents for the bulk of it. I'm now going back and re-researching everyone and keeping a copy of any papers or digital records I can find.

Lots of work, but so worth it when I come across someone with incorrect info and need to convince them to correct their own trees. Without my documentation I would have a more difficult time getting the records straight.

Thanks for listening! I love you all!

Hello.. I am a Vaughan.. Walter was the first cousin of my father. Walter's father John was my grandfather's brother..their father was Victor C Vaughan. Vaughans have gone up to Old Mission since the late 1800's when Victor took his family of 5 boys up there for the summer months, so your relative probably met them there. I don't think they are related. Lardie and Swaney are Old Mission names I recognize.

I have Caroline Fraser's diamon ring and my granddaughter will be the sixth lady to own this wonderful Victorian setting with 6 stones.
So glad to find your message on google. Antoine Pierre Pelletier was my great great grandfather. I have an invitation to his funeral in 1846, a letter from him as a pharmacist in Hamburg, S.C. and the declaration of his citizenship in1830. He came from Nancy, France. My cousin
Martha Vaughn Huge is interested in Martha Vaughn. I am from Robert J. Delph, Marie Louise's first husband. His daughter, Jasper Virginia Delph (Dec 25, 1854-Feb. 25, 1964, was my Grandmother. Ed Mc Dill
