Hi Everyone
I'm looking for Gloria "Robbie" Robinson. To my knowledge her mother was a Velar from Pittsburgh however I don't know her name. Gloria is my aunt and I have never met her. I beleive was born here in Pittsburgh and then moved to MI. Her father was Haywodd Robinson. If anyone knows her, please let me know. She would be in her 60s. I'm sure she is married and doesn't use the Robinson surname anymore.

Thank you

Tiff_pa@yahoo.com

Thank you so much for the kind reply..I will try to find that book. This is interesting..Jean Velar of France was a noted actor..the Laniers were artists, writers, actors..they were intermarried with the Bassanos who were also artists and musicians..they fled the French Rev. to England..you may find the articles on the Laniers of England most interesting.
My research of the Velar name is just one of those "shot in the dark" kind of feeling things..my mother, Mary Velar Griffin..the message that in one family it was spelled Veler..my mother was called Veler, or Velah..with a Southern country accent..she never went by Mary..she didn't like the name (prob. because of the pronunciation or mispronunciation is my guess) so she changed it to Vera..I will study your correspondence with each other, and thank cyburell for the email..it had to have come from someone in the family..there are Laniers on mamas grandmothers fraternal branch..Mary Ann Davis daughter of James Davis and Susannah Goff, James Davis to George Davis who married Elizabeth Lanier in Georgia ...and the Laniers travel back to Virginia and Barbados, and earlier out of serving the English courts as musicians and artists. If anyone thinks there might be a connection between the Laniers and Velar family..just put Laniers of Virginia in your google, then Laniers of England..its all there documented. My mothers mother, Pauline Tanner, daughter of Mary Ann Davis from James and George Davis and the Laniers looks Indian or Spanish. Pat in MObile

Please read all of the post about the VeLar family. In our "group" the story is that a Velar male traveled with Fr. Marquett (sp) to the Hudson Bay area. There were some un-named people on the Hudson Bay ships.

A book written by Jean Velar of France, gives information on the Velar family in France. Jean Velar was a noted actor, his family came from a village where the family business was making (of course, if you are a Velar you'll understand)corsetts. The book had pictures of his son's and their home. I have tryed to fine this book again, but not luck.

I am American, my mothers middle name was Velar..I can't find anyone who carries that name..you mentioned it was French..on my mothers paternal grandfathers line, the Lanier Family from Rouen appear..I wonder if the Velars and Laniers were connected..I have tried everything else..the only thing I can think of now is that it was a family name passed down..possibly.
I haven't heard of that happening. I had thought it was changed once before from "Vilar" but I could not find any evidence of this. how far back does the "E" Veler's go?

I have traced back to the 1860's for the VeLar family going back to Missouri. Then a 30 year gap where a (possibly related) VeLar appears in the same area in the 1830s . (St.Louis thereabouts). This is all recorded in the census tables available.

VeLar of Pittsburgh Detroit

I am David VeLar, the grandson of Jean VeLar-Pettway. Jean VeLar is one of four sisters, two of whom I know, Rita Laura. She's really known as "Mamma Jean". I am vaguely aware of two other sisters and perhaps a brother but I am not for certain. We live in Detroit, but Jean was from Pittsburgh and moved here around the WW2 period. Another note is that many of us in our family spell VeLar with the "L" as capital. Some of our ancestors include another Jean VeLar of France, Nathaniel VeLar of ???

Georgie VeLar and Adolph VeLar were Jean's parents.

Any relatives should e-mail me so we can build a more comprehensive family tree.
