COLUMBIA, TN Howard Velie, 93, a longtime Hyde Park resident, died July 28, 2005 in Columbia, Tenn., where he resided with his daughter, Linda and her husband, Matthew, and two granddaughters, Sarah and Heidi Germano, for the past three years. Born in Hyde Park in 1912, he was the son of the late Edward and Ida Velie, Howard was well known as a great submarine pitcher with the Albany Senators, a minor league baseball team from 1936 to 1937, and then he pitched for the Hyde Park Robin Hoods from 1938 to 1940. Howard is in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. He also played basketball for the Federals and is in the Dutchess County Basketball Hall of Fame. Howard enlisted to serve in the US Army Air Corp. during World War II. He received 6 Battle Stars, participated in the Battle of the Buldge, and served in Belgium, Holland, France, England, and Germany. He served the Town of Hyde Park as Highway Superintendent from 1956 to 1973 and from 1978 to 1985. He was well known for his hard work, humor, and charm. He will be greatly missed. He also belonged to St. James' Episcopal Church in Hyde Park, the American Legion, and the Hyde Park Lions Club. In 1959 he married Ruth Ledwith at the Reformed Dutch Church of Hyde Park. Mrs. Velie predeceased him on October 1, 2002. Survivors include 3 children; Howie Velie of Wappingers Falls, Anne Ferenz of Wellington, Florida, and Linda Germano of Columbia, Tenn.; 2 stepdaughters, Dianne Schroder of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Janet Pagano of Hopewell Junction; 5 Grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Lyman of Midlothian, VA; and several nieces and a nephew. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, John Velie. One hour of visitation will be from 10 to 11 am, Wednesday, August 3rd at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9 Hyde Park. Funeral services will be at 11am at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the family plot in Union Cemetery of Hyde Park with Military Honors.
