I'm still looking for information on this family. I did recently discover than John Venias is listed as a seaman on the C.S.S. Morgan, serving out of Mobile, Alabama. This is perhaps the same man, and perhaps the reason he came to America. Later censuses say he was born in Barcelona and that he immigrated around 1860. He married in 1865 in Mobile to Mary Frances Kilpatrick
