I'm still looking for information on this family. I did recently discover than John Venias is listed as a seaman on the C.S.S. Morgan, serving out of Mobile, Alabama. This is perhaps the same man, and perhaps the reason he came to America. Later censuses say he was born in Barcelona and that he immigrated around 1860. He married in 1865 in Mobile to Mary Frances Kilpatrick.

Thank you for your response, Julia. Actually, my VENIS line was German in origin, their name originally being FINIS. Johann Heinrich FINIS, the father of my Christiana, came to America as a Hessian mercenary soldier fighting on the side of the British during the Revolutionary War. He was captured by the Continental Army, and after the War decided to remain in America. His daughter Christiana married Jacob SUMMERS in Virginia, and in 1818 they migrated to Indiana. She is buried there in St. John's Cemetery, Greenville, Floyd Co. Most of the rest of her family moved to Ohio, where many can be found today.

Thanks again.

Jack

Hi, My name is Gary Venus. I have always been interested in
discovering information about my last name. The only info
I have is my Grandfather's name was Cecil Venus and he was
born in Newmarket, England, and came to London, Ontario,
Canada, ( where I live ) in the 1920's? ( guessing )
Does his name ring any bells?
Thanks, Gary

Venus surname

Further to message from David Venus Grieveson. My grandfather was born in 1880 - Frederick Charles Venus. His fatherb was one of 21 children. If I can find the family bible I can possible find out more. As there were so many children in the Venus family, probably born around the early 1800s it is quite likely that there are many links out there. Any info gratefully received.

My maiden name was Venus and I was born in Devon. My Grandfather was born in 1880 and died in 1978. His name was Frederick Charles Venus and was one of eleven childen. My great grandfather also lived in Devon but I think he originally came from elsewhere in the UK. My grandfather went to Canada with some of his brothers as a young man (Salmon fishing) and at least two of his brothers settled in Canada, I think they were called Wilf and Alf. Two more of the brothers settled in Hull, they were called Wallace and Bern. Anyone know any of these names.

I saw your message re: Martin V and marriage to Venus. Martin V. Willover was my great grandfather's (John A.)brother. There parents were Abram Willover and Emeline Coon of Hinsdale and Olean (Cattaraugus County),
NY. There is a great historical site at:
www.rootsweb.com~nycattar/bios/catcobies.txt.
It mentions several Willovers including Martin V., he was a Civil War veteran captured at Plymouth, NC. It says he died in Florence. Florence what I can't tell you.
Did Venus and Martin have any children, where were they married? My great uncle, George Willover (John's son - Martin's nephew)married a Nellie W. Green (daughter of James Green and Olive C. Lyle) in Kinzua PA July 11 1900. They lived in and around Olean,NY,and I believe also Niagra Falls.
Let me know if we can share some information.
