Verne or Vercherine?

My mother's family came from Cecil Belgium with the name of Vercherine(or something to that effect) and the name was changed to Verne.Does any one know recognize this name or maybe know the correct spelling?My grandmother was born 1906 with the Verne name,but it's hard to trace if you can't go back to the correct spelling of her father's name.Thanks,Sherri
