I have a small oil on canvas of the cove at Laguna Beach, which is approximately 5 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches (image size). A label on the reverse of it reads "This picture is a genuine oil painting on canvas by Verne of Laguna Beach, Califorrnia. It is in the original period frame, and was probably painted sometime in the 1950s. If you have an interest in owning this painting for a modest sum, or trading it for a painting or watercolor that you own, just let me know. My email address is dean92253@aol.com and I live in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Hope you get this. My grandparents, Gordon & Billie Bird owned Birds Studio Shops in Laguna Beach during the '40's (perhaps earlier) until the late 50's. Verne was one of their favorite artists. His style is very recognizable. Verne also painted large scenes. He would come into the shop with his pet monkey (perhaps a spider monkey) on his shoulder and while he showed my grandparents his work he would let me play with him. I was about 4 or five at the time. I think he lived in the Laguna Canyon and was truly one of Laguna's popular artists. My grandparents shop was on Pacific Coast Hwy, just across from the Hotel Laguna.
Delighted to find this information. About 7 years ago I went to the Laguna Art Museum to see if someone there knew about Verne. I will now go back with this new information to see if there is someone with enough longevity to add more information to the story. For several years in the 40s a friend and I vacationed a week in Laguna and became acquainted with Verne miniatures. When I was married in '53 my friend gave me two. They are treasures and bring back fond memories.
Charles Verschueren(King) was my grandfather. He married Katherine Kane about 1920 and they lived briefly together in NY City. Their daughter Elizabeth, my mother, told me after the breakup of the marriage, Charles changed his name to King and worked as a waiter in NY. She knew very little about him. Her mother died in the 1930's. My mother was raised in Philadelphia as Elizabeth Verschueren. Can anyone recall this family? I have reached a dead end with my research.

Actually, I have a bit of a different story about the artist who used the name "Verne". Per my father, "Verne" was a man named Tommy Duckworth who moved to California from England in the 40s (I think - it may have been the 50s). He was my father's uncle and it is quite possible that his wife was named Gladys. My father says that it was Tommy who did the painting. Perhaps Gladys gave them away as gifts and/or sold them on his behalf. I would dearly like to track down and buy one of his paintings as there are none in my family. My Dad is in his 80s and would love to see one before he dies.

You appear very knowledgable about Belgium. My grandparents JOSEPH RENE VERSHAVE and wife ANGELINE came from Belgium but I do not know what part. They immigranted to Monroe, Michigan (on Lake Erie just South of Detroit). I can find no record of their arriving or any other relatives who also came to the states. JOSEPH RENE was born 11-18-1887. Rumor has it the name was "Americanized" when they arrived and was spelled VERSCHAAVE.

Are you aware of this name?

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreaciated.

I, too, have a painting by Verne of Laguna Beach. Mine is dated and explained on back. It was a gift from the Rotary Club to a member who visited from the farthest away, and was given to that far-travelling member on March 13, 1959. They gave a small painting like that because it would fit in the member's luggage. I don't know anything about the artist. Do you?

"Verne of Laguna Beach" was Gladys (Hall) Duckworth - she was my great-aunt. She lived just south of Boston, MA as a girl. She later lived in London - she and her husband fled London during the Blitz, stayed briefly in Brockton visiting with my grandmother, and eventually moved out to Laguna. She was a miniaturist - and was extremely prolific - I see her paintings on ebay often. She died just after my college years,
probably about 1979-1980.

I have a few paintings of hers that were gifts to my grand-mother - signed "to Hazel from Gladys" with the Verne sticker on the back. Most date from the 1950's and 1960's.
She sold through commercial gift shops. I'm trying to get more information on her myself.

Dear Franz,

I have trouble accessing Yahoo. Thank you for the explinaton on who we are. My Mother spoke French, she told me that she studied French because her father spoke a little French and a little German. I assume that he learned those from his parents.

A gentleman named Luc Matthijs, living 50 km from Sijsele told me to write to Gruloos P. Verschueren in Sijsele. Luc said that the municipalty of Sijsele was incorporated into the municipality of Damme in 1976. I wrote to Gruloos on December 27, 2001, about 3 weeks ago. I have not received and answer yet.

My grandfather's sister was either Gustine or Augustine. Victor and Rosalie are also family names in my Belgian family. My mother told me that my grandfather had light brown hair and blue eyes. She said he had an olive completion. I have light brown hair (turning gray) and green eyes. I also have the olive complection. My grandfather abondoned his children after his wife died in 1921. He moved to California with his new wife, leaving his children in orphanges in Ohio. Sounds like my grandfather may have been a frenchman by ancestry. After my mother turned sixteen, she only saw her father twice more. He died in California in 1947.

Thank you again my friend. Much love and God Bless.

Betty

Dear Betty
Did you got my message of yesterday? I found out where your family came from in "West Flanders" They are from the village "Sijsele" but the prononcation is something like "Cai-seele" In our dialect the prononcation is "ceecaile" Your memory is very good, the sound was about exact!
One more thing about this name:
Horeum = heure = har = yard = gardener etc...
the "gardener" is put in the barn
bye bye, hope to have a little answer! If you tell me the name of your ancestre and birthday, I can found out his ancestres because here in Flanders we have very good archives; the birth registers, the baptism registers, the marriage registers, the town registers also, some are up to 1200 because there are also "old burgher registers" , orfan registers! bye bye see you later!
Thank you much for answering my message. The name of the town is Sijsele. I know it is part of Flanders. I was told by another researcher that our family name Verschueren meant from the barn. My great grandparents left Sijsele prior to 1885 to come to the United States. They brought two or three daughters with them. The name of one of these daughters was Gustine or Augustine. My grand father was born in McDonald, Pennsylvania, United States on February 9, 1885. Before 1900 my great grandparents returned to Sijsele as my great grandmother had a terminal illness and she wished to die at home. The children remained in the USA. I do not know my great grandparents given names. My mother's middle name was Rosalie and she said that she was name for a family member in Belgium. My great grandfather's given name may have been Victor, I don't know for sure. I would sincerely appreciate anything you can help me with. Thank you again and God Bless.

Betty

My Dear,
I have genealogy about the "Verscheure" 's till 1360
The name means "of the barn"
Verscheure = Vanderscheure because "Vander" = " Ver" (short writing) the mean part of the name : Scheure or Schuere or Schure etc it means "barn" but the name was
in Latin : "Horeum" it changed into Heure (in English it became "Gar" (from Heure = harre of Gar) : "place to collect and to preserve things like still "garden" where you collect the veggies or winegarden (where you collect the wineplants)
in German "Weingarden" in English "vineyard" The word " Gar"
changes in Grad in Russian (place to collect people, a town, like "Petrograd" Novograd etc... Our name means place to collect things (people, wineplants etc...corn, wheat, a barn)
there is a nice Latin motto : "Labor farcit horeum" that means :
only labor will fill the barn!! (also "Studium farcit horeum") that means :diligence only can fill the barn" If you need more information, write me! I could find your family back if you like but I have to know more about the village where they came from.Anyway "Verscheure" is a Flemish name, a south west Flemish name!! The flemish people are known as the most hard working people of the world (that is not a joke) Lot Flemish are blound, blue eyes, good build (the ladys are the best build of Europe - remember the painter Rubens who painted the well formed nude ladys, they are Flemish hahaha)
(but a bit rough people, no discussions, only labor counts hahaha and the sweat when their money decrease, hahaha)bye bye " Verscheure" Write me back, I am sometimes on Yahoo with nickname: "franz_37" in the "older and wiser" room Maybe we can make contact ! bye bye "Forsure"

Thanks for responding to my message. My pictures are 5 x 5 seascapes. Perhaps our string of messages will inspire others to post more information for us -- perhaps Verne him- or herself!

I also have 2 small paintings by Verne--purchased in a thrift shop in San Diego in 1998--each a sweet little bouquet in a vase. I was searching the Web for info re: the 5x5 paintings when I found your messages--but nothing else! Strange that someone hasn't solved the mystery.

Thanks for your reply! I've not discovered anything more about VERNE. My two paintings are about 5" x 5" and seem to be a matched set of desert mountain/sky scapes. Actually quite charming.

JFH

I too have two small paintings by the artist Verne of Laguna Beach -- both sea scapes. They were originally sold by Bird's Studio Shops of Laguna Beach. However, my mother purchased them at a garage sale here in New York State. I would be interested in knowing whether or not you discovered anything about this artist as well. They are very attractive little oil paintings albeit nothing that remarkable.

Verne family

My family have connections with descendants from Verun in Belgium. They were Huguenots who came to Bristol, England fleeing from persection. My family are called Furne and I believe this was originally the Veruns, (called that because they came from Verun.) It is easy to see how this could have been chaged to Furne or to the name you are researching. I have not got any more detailed info as I have come up against a dead end. There are books you can buy on Hugenots in Bristol (try Amazon.com) so you might find that of use

Artist/Painter "VERNE of Laguna Beach" CA

I just purchased 2 small paintings at a
local thrift store (Los Angeles, CA) by
an artist, VERNE. On the back are decals
that read "Verne of Laguna Beach". One has
a Knotts Berry Farm decal as well. (Probably
from being re-sold or perhaps originally sold
in a shop there?)

These paintings have got to be at least
40 to 50 years old or so. Is there anyone
out there who can tell me more about this
artist, and perhaps about how prolific he/she
may have been,(or perhaps still is) etc?

Thank you for your time and interest.

verschuerern/Verschurren

My great grandparents came to the United States prior to 1885 from Ceciel, Belgium. I can not even locate a correct spelling for their last name, as somewhere along the line it may have been changed to Verne. My grandfather Ernest Arthur was born in Pennsylvania in February 1885. My great grandparents returned to Belgium before World War 1. They had two or three daughters that came to the United States with them and they stayed here. I believe one of their names was Gustine or Agustine, another may have been Margaret. My grandfather Ernest married Ella Martha Helmer. My grandmother died in 1921 and my grandfather Ernest married a woman named Jesse, she had five children. Ernest A. Verschuerer is listed on the Ohio 1910 Census, with the right wifw and children. Then he vanishes. My grandmother Ella, his first wife is buried by the name of Ella M. Verschurren, in Painesville, Cayahoga Ccounty, Ohio. My grandfather had two sons, Ernest died 1903/1905 and Arthur was adopted away from the family in late 1921 or early 1922, adopted name unknown. Ernest and Ella had five daughters, Ella Rosalie(my mother), Ruth Naomi, May Omozene, Mirium (died as an infant)and Frances Lenora. I need to find out how to corectly spell my family name and I would appreciate any and all information that any one might have as to who I am. God Bless and Thank You. Betty
