Re: VESPER in Lewis Co., MO

I have a typed page of information that came to me through my Aunt Gretchen Vesper McGuinn, written by Walter H. Vesper, Jr. who apparently compiled a book of Vesper history. I have been unable to locate any copies of the book, which must have had a limited circulation. He may have been from Oklahoma City, but I have not followed that lead.
Frederick Vesper was born Georg Friedrich Heinrich Vesper in 1821 in Waldeck, Prussia, Germany. The family came to America leaving Bremen, Germany and arriving at New Orleans, coming up the Mississippi to Canton, MO. This information is verified on a taped interview my father made with Gretchen and Minnie Vesper, my aunts, who were daughters of Frederick and Mary's son, Henry William Vesper.
The name Munden is mentioned in various places but I am not sure if this is a town, province, state, or other.

Frederick married Mary Wagoner (spelling from marriage license)18 November 1848 in Quincy Illinois. They had these children: Elizabeth, John, Henry William, Mary, Malinda (Ming, Minnie), Lulie (Lilly). Mary died between 1863 and 1870 and Fred died in 1893. After Mary died, Fred married Louisa Witt and apparently had another daughter, Catherine. My aunt Gretchen says that Louisa left Frederick and went to St. Louis. He apparently cut her and Katie off in his will.

Various information can be found in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census reports.

Two of the Vesper children married into the Brose family. There is an extensive Brose family tree on Ancestry including pictures. I am going to attach a picture of Mary Zahn and nieces and nephew to my tree. It is not a good picture, but all I have.

I am descended from Henry William Vesper, through his daughter Elizabeth.

I realize this is an old posting, but perhaps it will reach you. My grandfather was Henry Wiliam Vesper who was one of the eight children of Frederick and Mary Vesper, so he was a brother of Mary Zahn. I have very little information about the family but would appreciate anything else you can add. I also have some information about the Brose family; two of the Vesper siblings married Broses.

You can find my family tree on rootsweb.com under the worldconnect project. Search for database vvesper1 - it will show the tree (including what dates I have and sources) - plus my email address. Please email me directly, and we can "talk" more!

Wow. I did a quick search tonight on my paternal great-grandmother, and came up with this. Bertha Vesper did indeed marry Albert Witte. One of their sons (I don't know about any other children) was Carl Paul Witte, who married Caroline Amelia Elser. She had three children, although not all by him. The one that belonged to them was Paul Vallance Witte, my father. I have no dates on any of the births/deaths/marriages except for that of my father. Any info you have on the trip from Germany to NJ, or on the rest of the family, would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know how many children Johann Vesper had, but we are descended from his son Christian D. Vesper. We did not know about Francis. Christian D. was born in Qurenheim Province, Bavaria and emigrated to Ohio in 1832 at age 15. Christian D. is buried at the Vesper Cemetary in Vermillion Township, Ashland County. Helen Vesper Beck created a family tree in the late 1960s that traces this branch of the family.

DNA project

I am starting a Vesper surname DNA project at Family Tree DNA, and would like to invite all male members of the Vesper family to participate. This project will test Y-chromosome DNA to determine which of the Vesper families are connected to each other and how closely. If you are a female Vesper, you cannot personally participate because you do not have the Y-chromosome which is passed from father to son - but you may participate by finding a male Vesper in your line to take the test (father, brother, cousin, etc.).

You can find more information on the company, testing, and Y-chromosome research in general at www.familytreedna.com. If you wish to participate (or know someone who does) - please email me or join the project on Family Tree's website (http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Vesper). Test results are kept private and will only be disclosed to you and to me (as group administrator); on the project web site, results will be shown by test kit number and earliest known Vesper ancestor only. However, you can request that Family Tree DNA email you with information on any other men whose results match yours (assuming they have given the same permission).

Please email me with any questions and pass this along to any other Vesper researchers you may know!

Valerie Vesper

Charles's mother's maiden name may have been Behring. Charles had two sisters, Sophie Vesper, who married Otto Benoit, and Bertha Vesper, who married Albert Wittie/Witte/Witta. Would love any further info on any of them!

I am researching a branch of the Briggs family which came to the US in 1830 and built a woolen mill in Holderness, NH. I came across James M. Vesper yesterday as the husband of Elizabeth P. Briggs while researching at the NH Vital Statistics Section. He was listed as of Newburyport, MA at the time of marriage, but his birth is not recorded there. The marriage was performed by Rev George S. Dearborn, the husband of Elizabeth's sister, Sarah Ann.(You may already know all of this)A quick look at the birth records of some of the surrounding towns doesn't turn him up either.
He moved to Dixon,Il where his sisters-in-law, Mary Briggs Cheney and Ruth Briggs Shepard also went. He served in F Battery, 1st Il Light Artillery during the Civil War, which was commanded by Mary Briggs Cheney's husband, John T. Cheney. I will continue to look for a birth record for James M. Vesper and let you know what I find. Can you tell me anything about his subsequent life? children, etc? Did he later move to Iowa? Would appreciate any help you can give me to bring Elizabeth Briggs Vesper's line current. Thanks.

I talked to my dad on the phone, this is what I found out so far. I knew we had a Charles in our family, turns out Charles was my dads great grandfather. His son Johann (which is German for John) is my dads grandfather. he couldn't remember Charles wifes name, but he knew it started with a C. and that they had 14 or 15 kids. I will find out more information this weekend. I will also try and get a hold of my grandpa. If it turns out to be the same family, I have pictures of the cemetery. i will find out where it is this weekend also. I know for sure in South Dakota. my grandparents live there. I was also wondering where you lived. my family now lives in Iowa and i am 20 years old.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate, and a letter written by Jed Shepherd in behalf of James Morris Vesper, affirming the death of Elizabeth 30 June 1868 in Dixon, Lee, Illinois. As far as I can determine there were no children of this marriage. She is believed to have acted as a physician after the Civil War and is mentioned in a letter from a friend that she treated. James Morris Vesper later moved to Walnut Twp. in Bourbon County, Kansas and married Mary Chalia Linthicum in 1873. I am descended from this union. I am excited to learn more about Elizabeth, or Lizzie/Libbie as she was called by him. He named his first daughter after her, Elizabeth Pearl Vesper. Would love to know more about the Briggs. Cheney was his commander in the Civil War. E-mail address cgibbons@whitemtns.com

Hi Kim and Toni,

I am interested as well as I am a descendant of Henrietta. She married Gotlieb Schaefer, my great grandfather. I know they lived around Avon, SD and there are still Vespers there(I think).

An interesting side note, while in college(1983-1986) I worked at Black Hills Packing Co. in Rapid City, SD, my hometown. My supervisor was a man named Don Vesper. A month before I was done working there I find out from my grandfather that he is a shirttail cousin. Last I heard Don was a federal meat inspector in Western SD. I also think they owned a small motel in Hill City, SD(in the Black Hills). Does anyone know Don?

I now currently live outside of Chicago and would like any info and will share what I have. Let me know what interest there is and can't wait to find out more!

Bruce

Looking for information on my Great Grandparents James (we think) and Anna (do not know her maiden name) Vesper lived in Durango, CO. Not sure how many children they had but my grandmother was one of them... Blanche Lucille Vesper and dad has told me he thinks sons names wee Harry/Harold, Russell, Dave/David....Blanche married Roy Marion Neiman, the son of Willis Marion Neiman and Bertha Luella Claflin? or McClaflin? I have seen it spelled both ways. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
