I've decided to reply to this request for information on the location of the Vestal land in Orange/Frederick/Berkeley/Jefferson Co., VA/WV in a separate message, instead of the thread below on Vestal research, so it won't get lost in that conglomeration of miscellaney!!!
William & Elizabeth Mercer Vestal's land was located on the Shenandoah River, very close to where Highway 9 out of Charles Town crosses the Shenandoah. It begins slightly south of the road and is a long, narrow strip going further south along the river. At least part of it is now a gun club and accessible to members only. If you use Mapquest and put in "Bloomery, WV" and choose the "Jefferson" choice, you will see the Hwy 9 crossing. Zoom one closer and Bloomery appears. The ferry was John Vestal's, brother of William. John's land was located burther north and is on the side of a hill/mountain (depends on your definition!), with part of the land on the Shenandoah, where the ferry was.
I'll try to find the pictures tonight of both William & John's land, John's home, and the surveyor's drawing of the location of William's land. If anyone would like a copy of these, let me know.
Ginny
