The Mo. Vestals come from the Indiana bunch who came from the Va bunch who came from the NY branch who came over from England in 1625 (they were in Portsmouth) Thomas Vestall designed the Mayflower. We come through Wm Russell Vestall
of Devon. The second "l" was dropped along the trip. We even have a family Coat of Arms, meaning there was a lot of land involved in England. My Gr. Gd-father was a mining Engineer in Bavier,Mo.in 1800's... LOTS of shirt-tail relatives in those parts..maybe your folks are some of them.I am the last of my family, so you have to keep it going,I guess!

I will be glad to make you a copy and send it to you. Jesse was a large man, and his wife was a tiny woman. In the pic she has her hand on his thigh which you don't find many like that of that era. In this pic he looks to be about 55-60 yrs old. James, his son, is about 25-30 (good looking guy) He was my great grandfather, died late 1920s (born about 1851) My grandfather said he had an awful temper. I have a pottery jug that was found near the old home place in Alvarado Va. I would love to have one with his name on it. They sale for thousands of dollars. Have you seen the one at the Penn House in Abingdon Va-has a poem written by Jesse, 1849. He would have been about 21yrs old then.

The Vestals in Missour that are my ancestors are David Terrill Vestal (1825-1864) married Sarah Ellen Motley (1834-1888). David was born in Maury County TN (the son of Jay Vestal) and David and Sarah moved to the Sarcoxie, MO area probably in the 1850's after they were married in TN in 1853. Their children: John Jay, Charles James, Panola Alice, Mary D. "Mollie", Sarah Jaretta, Naoma Elizabeth (who was my maternal great grandmother.)
Not sure if any of these names are in your line but feel free to contact me if I can be of assistance.
Vestals in Missouri

I would like to learn more about Vestals in Missouri; specifically Southern Missouri (Licking, Thayer, Joplin, Springfield). My Grandfather Robert Vestal grew up in Licking, he married Barbara Mabe from Steelville, MO and they had two boys Gary Lynn and Bruce Wynn, they lived in Thayer, MO. Gary married a woman from AR named Judith with one son Brandon. Bruce married Kellie Jean Rayborn from Seneca, MO with one daughter Brianna Rae. Does anyone one know the origins of the Vestal name in the state of Missouri?

I am never sure how much information someone may have on the family.

William Vestal born in 1667 in England, died 1701 in Chester Co Penn. He married Alice Glover in 1692 in Burks Co Penn, daughter of George Glover and Alice Lamboll. She was babtized at the Brandywine Baptist Church in Chester Co, in 1697. She and william homesteaded 174 acres of land on the "east side of the Brandywind Creek at the forks thereof". They had four childre: William 1696-1745, Sarah 1693-1696, Mary 1694-?, and George 1698-?

William Vestal was born in 1696 in Chester Co Penn and died in 1745 in Fredrick Co Viginia, He married Elizabeth Mercer in 1716 in Chester Co, daughter of Thomas Mercer and Mary Greenway. They had seven children. Thomas born on Sept 08, 1727 in Chester Penn, married 07.06.1754 to Elizabeth Davies (daughter of Charles & Hannah Maston Davies). He would die 6.12.1813 in Chatham Co North Carolina. They had 10 children.

The third child William Robert Vestal(11.29.1759 Orange Co Penn-10.13.1828 Surry Co North Carolina). He married Mary Wheeler. They had seven children: Thomas, William, John,James (1730), Jemima, David & Mary, all born in Chester Co Penn.

James Vestal would marry three times having 12 children by two of the wives. His second wife was Phebe Allen (born 1738/39-died 10.19.1787 in North Carolina). They had three children. Their youngest child Robert Issac (born in Chester Co Penn 1778- 1861/2 died in Indiana) married Elizabeth Longino. They had 9 children one son was William Allison Vestal, MD (1822/23- 1870, in Alabama) and he married Catherine Isabell McGinnis. They lived in Dadeville, Tallapoosa County, and in 1870 in Eufala, Tallapoosa Co, Alabama. In the late 1880's she moved with 7 of her 8 children to Union County Arkansas and is buried in Sweet Home Cem along with numerous family members.

Hope this helps you some. Most of the information comes from work done by a cousin, now deceased, Illa Merle Vestal Knox in 1980-1981.

Hangs on the wall of my office:
"Happy is the person who thinks of their ancestors with pride, and who likes to feel themselves linked to the end of their goodly chain."
Sealey Elizabeth Vestal is the daughter of William Allison & Catherine Isabell McGinnis Vestal. He was a physician in Tallapoosa county Ala from 1860 to the 1870's. He died there we think of a stroke. Catherine moved with her large family to Union County Arkansas in the late 1880's. Many of the Vestal clan are buried in the Sweet Home Cem about 5 miles south and east of Strong Arkansas. William and Catherine are my great great great granparents. Lots of information is available. Charles Smith
nursefnp@hotmail.com

Hello,

John Vestal b 1718 Chester, PA d 1776 Hopewell MM, VA was the son of William Vestal/Elizabeth Mercer Woodward. This William (son of Wm Vestal/Alice Glover)did not have a brother named John. All the children of William and Elizabeth Mercer Woodward Vestal died in NC except for their son, John. Accoring to what I have in my files, John Vestal m 17 Dec 1748 Hannah Potts and they and family stayed in VA, WVA. From my notes:

According to the will of William Vestal (III), 5 shillings was bequeathed to " the HEIR of John Vestal, dec'd", thus John died before date of will, 7th day, May 1787.
From Pioneers of Old Frederick County, VA, 1 May 1750, John Vestal began purchasing land, including the land where the road crosses the Shenandoah. In April 1754, George Wasington paid John Vestal to ferry a Virginia Regiment over the Shenandoah. In 1772 the Virginia Assembly approved to keep road in repair (through Vestal Gap) and John Vestal was appointed one of the trustees for the project.
Inventory of estate recorded in Berkley County, VA now in WVA at the time of his death.

I hope this answers your question.

Peggy in CA

About James Martin Vestal. He could very well be a son of Thomas Vestal and Rachel Martin. This Thomas Vestal was born in 1830 in NC. I have a marriage date for him and Rachel Martin of 1849. I have only 3 daughters listed. I dont know whether any of this family moved to MO but I wouldnt be surprised at all. Many of the Vestal families moved west from NC. This is a related Vestal line to me. This Thomas Vestal[Rachel Martin] b 1830 is a son of Thomas Vestal 1791 - aft 1850 [Mary Magdaline Brower], oldest son of Thomas Vestal 1759 - 1828 [Mary Wheeler]. I descend from his younger brother John Vestal, Sr who married 2ndly Betsy Crooke. My family went to Indiana.

I hope this helps.

Peggy

Hello,

I would be very interested in the picture of Mary Vestal in Indiana. My Vestal ancestors came from Indiana. Originally, the Vestal family was Quaker.
I am also interested in the King surname as it connects with von Herrmann. My great grand uncle married a lady by the name of Isabel Barnwell King. She was the daughter of Henry Gray King and Katherine McIntosh Barnwell. Do the names sound familiar? Please contact me through my regular email address: Pegleghill@aol.com

Peggy in CA

For Nettie Vestal this is what I have in my files:

Nettie was a daughter of Orlando William Vestal b 1862 Illinois d 1932 CA/Louisa LNU b Germany. Orlando and Louisa had 6 children.
Orlando William Vestal was a son of Johnathan Vestal b 1818 NC/Mary R. Clothier b 1820 Canada. Jonathan and Mary had 11 children. Jonathan's 2nd wife was Margaret Analia.
Jonathan Vestal was a son of Joseph Vestal b 1772 Orange, NC/Elizabeth Hamilton. Joseph and Elizabeth Hamilton Vestal had 9 children.
Joseph was of the 13 children of David Anthony Vestal b 1735 Orange, NC/Sarah Cole Chamness b 11 Feb 1740 in VA
Please note that at one time, the William Vestal family lived in PA, then VA and ran a bloomery, before finally moving to North Carolina. This family was Quaker for many years and generations. Many records of the Vestal family can be found at Cane Creek, NC and according to the Quaker records available.
David Anthony Vestal was the son of William Vestal/Elizabeth Mercer Woodward.

Many of the Vestal descendants still live in NC. My brothers and their families live in and around the Winston Salem, NC. area.

Peggy in CA
Hi Evelyn,
Interesting information, I have Simon Hadley in my Vestal files but he is related to the Newlin, Piggot and Hobsons who are all related in some way to the Vestals. For example I have Simon Hadley 1810 - 1896 m 1842 Eunice Hobson, daughter of William Hobson/Ruth Newlin. Ruth was the daughter of Joshua Newlin and Achsah P Vestal, who was a daughter of David Vestal and Sarah Chamness. Now, this Simon must have been well respected because in my files I have Simon Hadley Vestal b 1817 d Iowa who was the son of Joseph Vestal and Elizabeth Hamilton, married 1841 to Alley Jane Chambers, d Indiana. Both were born in NC. Joseph, was a son of David Vestal and Sarah Chamness. I have only 5 children listed( with no further information)for Simon and Alley Jane Chambers Vestal. Love to have further information. You can use my email address: Pegleghill@aol.com

Peggy in CA

I have all of my info on my Ancestry.com site. Do you belong to that? I would invite you to look at my things. I have Simon Hadley's and Ally Janes obits, the deed to the property they purchased in Dallas County, Iowa and as much info as I have been able to find to date including pictures. Thank you so much for posting this info on this site. JoAnn Vestal

Thanks for the info. Cornelius' son is not my James M. Vestal - even though mine was born c. 1852 in Missouri (based on census records). The similiarity in names has stymied my research, but it does lead me to think they're related some how. I'm just wondering if they're cousins somehow.

Hi Stephany -

What information do you have on the children of James Martin Vestal (b. 1824)? I have a James M. Vestal, born 1852 in Missouri, but no information about his parents. I know for sure that he can't be the son of Cornelius Vestal, the brother of JMV (1824), but I can't find any proof that he's actually the son of JMV (1824).

My JMV born 1852 is living in Sebastian County, Arkansas in the 1870 census, and then in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma Territory in the 1900 census.

With the similarity in names, I feel mine has to connected somehow, but I have no proof.

Thanks, Melissa

According to my source (Fox Family History by Dr. John Vallentine), George Fox, born abt 1769 prob. in Bucks Co, Pa, md. Miss Vestal of Chatham Co, NC. They had 7 children.

It also states that his children sued the estate of David Vestal, deceased, for money due them in 1828. "The David Vestal mentioned in the above power of attorney is apparently the same as David Vestal of Chatham Co, who died 17 Aug 1828, first having made his will on 6 Aug 1828 (w.p. Nov 1828) in which reference is made to the said Vestal's wife Sophia and children. This David Vestal and wife Sophia (18 Sep 1783-20 Nov 1857) are buried in Rocky fiver Friends Cem, Chatham, NC. The relationship of this David Vestal to George Fox's wife is uncertain."

I will have Elaine (who's mother is Eleanor Mary Vestal Goodrich who is the daughter of James Park Vestal (1880) and Ella (1880-1927?); take pictures of the board her mother made several years before Alzheimers started to rob the family of this beautiful woman. Before leaving Elaine's house this weekend to return home (5 hours away) she mentioned the scandal of the family that her mother held back from her until Elaine was 50 that Sadie was a murderess (I think of her own father) but Sadie was married to her cousin also I think Chalmers so I might have the murder victim wrong? I think it was eventually ruled a suicide but one of the children witnessed it as a murder. I did not want to pry because later Sadie or her daughter ended up living in El Paso at the same time Eleanor and Elaine lived there and when Elaine and her mother would drive by that house her mother had a fit and told her to drive by quickly because that woman was an evil woman capable of murder and what shame she brought ont he family.

Elaine knows the rest of the story but this is just a week after the death of her very much loved daughter-in-law so it was just not the right time to spend too much time on the family tree stuff I offered to help her with. I know that there are some sweet relatives of Eleanor that do delve into the family tree but eventually I will get the rest of the story as far as Elaine knows it and she will give the data I gather to them if any of it is unknown to them.

What I liked about this chart is that she had these extra tidbits on the board like the job or rank in the military. Like I said Once I have the pictures of the board in four piece I will recreate it digitally for Elaine and her children and will be happy to share it with you.
Ginny, if you still have the copies available, I would love them. I live 4 miles from the site of the iron furnace. The furnace was torn down several years ago because a tree had grown up through it.
Hi
My great great grandfather name was Dave Vestal and he had a sister named Fleeta Vestal Fox. I don't know her husband name and they lived around Chatham County. Dave Vestal married Rhine Morris (Morris is believed to be her maiden name). They had several children. Ella Vestal Herring (my grandmother), Nettia Vestal, Alex Vestal, Jay Vestal, Bud Vestal. Dave Vestal was Cherokee indian and my grandmother told my mother that after being jailed for making whiskey the government wanted him to make whiskey for them. That is all I know about my g g grandfather.
