Catherine “Kitty” Viola (Vester) Wakefield 1923-2006.……OBIT
Catherine Viola Vester Wakefield, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, in Portland at the age of 83.
Kitty was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Portland to Albert and Edna Vester. The early part of her growing up years were spent living on the Oregon coast where her father worked as a surveyor for Oregon Department of Transportation. Later they moved to Bonny Slope where Kitty attended and graduated from Beaverton High School in 1942.
On Dec. 22, 1963, Kitty married Dan Wakefield. For the next 42 years they lived and raised their children in the Portland area. Together they enjoyed a tradition of vacationing in Hawaii every December for many years.
Kitty’s first love was her family. She surrounded herself with pictures throughout her home. Her love for the ocean was never lost and she spent as much time as she could at the coast. She also loved flowers and made sure her yard was filled with them. Kitty was an active member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary for 54 years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Albert; her mother, Edna; brother, Carl; infant daughter, Jeanne; adult daughter, Sharon Lee Wakefield; granddaughter, Aubrey; and nephew, Rick.
Kitty is survived by her beloved husband, Daniel Wakefield of Portland; son, Terry Wakefield of Portland; and daughter, Danielle Wakefield of Vancouver; 18 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Delores Vester; nephew, Allen Vester; and nieces, JoAnn Johnstad and Nancy Cabitt.
A memorial service was held on Monday, August 28, 2006, at Ross Hollywood Chapel.
Remembrances can be made to the Portland Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
