My mother was Jacquline C Vian, her mothers name was Nellie Vian who married James Vian my grandfather.

Does anyone know who Catherine's parents were?

I have a Daniel Slate, born about 1803 in New Jersey, he was my ggg grandfather on my mother's side. In 1850, I find him in Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio as follows:
Danl. Slate, age 44, born N. J.
Eliz, age 40, born NJ
Thos, age 16, born NJ
Eliz. age 11, born Ohio
Mahala A., age 8, born Ohio
Jas. age 6, born Ohio
Martin, age 4, born Ohio

Mahala A. is my gg grandmother, she married William Lutts.

In 1860, they are in Richland Township, Dekalb County, Indiana. Ancestry.com translated their last name as Skeete instead of Slate. Common error.

I was wondering if Catherine might have been one of their children, possibly born before Thomas. I have been trying to find out when Daniel and Elizabeth died and where they might be buried. In case anyone can help me, my line from Daniel is:

Mahala Slate m William Lutts, married Dekalb County, Indiana, 1862

Vian from Guensey and England

My paternal gg grandmother was Rosa Letitia Vian. I believe she was born in St Peter Port, Guernsey around 1848. On her marriage certificate in 1870 she has stated her fathers name was Henry Vian, a sailmaker. She has also stated he was deceased. Rosa married in Notting Hill, London.
The Priaulx library in Guernsey are having problems finding Rosa. Apparently she was living with an aunt, Elizabeth Davey on the 1861 census. Interestingly there is an Anthony Vian lodging with Elizabeth Davey on the 1881 census. Rosa named her third son Anthony. I am trying to find out more about Rosa's parents and would love to hear from any one who has a Guernsey connection or recognises any of these names.

I have been trying to find information on the web about the Vian family. My paternal grandmother was Ellen I. Vian born 21 Jun 1854 in Mercer Co. OH. She died 30 Aug 1930 in Farifield Twnshp, DeKalb Co, IN. She was married to Daniel Treesh 5 Nov 1870. Do you have anyting going back down this line.

No I'm not absolutely certain. Whe died a year before I was born. She may have had a brother named Chauncey. I'm in no way sure of the spelling. The name isn't that common. That is the only cross reference I have that might help.

I do have info. about the VIAN Family from Mercer County Ohio. Are you sure about her name? I show a Louise Ellen and and a Sarah Ellen both born around that time. I have their parents as Rev. Jeremiah VIAN and Clarissa GRUB. They had 7 children total, I decend from their son John Smith VIAN. Let me know if you think their is a connection and I can email more. Linda

Hello Tim; I just found your February message, which is very interesting. I have a ggrandmother, Rosa Abilene Vian Buycken, b.Feb 1870, d.Jan 1962. Her father was an Ira Vian. Do you know if your grandfather, Theopolis, had a sister Rosa? Or, another, Lizzie? Or Mary? Or brother Elijah? Most lived in Junction City or Wakefield, KS.
For Ira, b.1 Apr 1834, d.22 Mar 1917, mar. Elizabeth Carson.

Hello cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyones postings, (I hope it is not considered rude?) I have done some research into John Vian, who supposedly came over during the Revolutionary War (is there any verification on this?) If John did come over during the Revolutionary War then the research I have found points to a probable birth date as well as his parents. So far what I have is that he was born (or Christened) on March 27, 1758 in Liskeard, Cornwall, England. (There are a multitude of Vian's from England, all congregated in the Cornwall area.) There are two possibilities for a John Vian from this time period. The reason I believe this John Vian is the one is that his parents were named William (born probably June 10, 1717) and Hannah ( maiden name Pudner, born January 28, 1727), (two of John Vian's childrens names). William and Hannah were married October 22, 1749. If this is close to what anyone else has found out, or they have different information, I sure would like to know. I also found some dates for Catherine Ruff and her parents Darius and Catherina. (Probably information that is already out there.)

Personally I am from Oregon, my Grandfather was Charles Theopholis Vian, (originally from Nebraska), son of Ira, son of William, son of John, son of William, son of John (the one in question...) Take care.

I did contact her. The last I heard she had just gotten out of the hospital and was not up to "e-mail" at that time and I have not heard back from her. I have found out the most from Gary and David. My nephew is doing the records work and he has some information but I have been on the go so much that I have not compiled any of it. I sent some photos to David by e-mail but I made a joking but true statement about some Vian men being male chavisnist and have not heard back. I hope I didn't offend him. He was the first that I had made contact with and he had been extremely helpful and sent really fun uplifting e-mails. My brother Bobby (Robert Austin Vian - 2nd son of Glen) had some contact with your brother in the last few years. I did not realize until after I talked with Gary that it was David's father and that he had died in December. His father was on my list for a telephone call. I will be going to San Jose in December for 2 weeks to visit with my daughter and son-in-law. I hope to contact Gary about a visit during that time.
